Meet the Staff!
- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Monday, October 19, 2009
Up until what I like to refer to as T-Day, we had been a relatively small blog. We knew a lot of the people who read it, and they knew us. Now, we have a massive influx of all these readers that we figure, hey! You new guys probably want to know a thing or two about us, huh? What makes us such great authorities for all your comic needs? Well, this is why we present a nice little article called "Meet The Staff" in which you can read all about us. Feel free to ask additional questions in the comments, we're always happy to say anything at all.
Matt Meylikhov
Age: 22
Location: Brighton, MA
LCBS Of Choice: New England Comics
Favorite Comics (all time): Preacher, those old Venom comics, Amazing Spider-Man, New X-Men, old Avengers before Disassembled
Favorite Comics (current): Invincible, Captain America, Batman and Robin, Green Lantern, Fantastic Four
Favorite Food: Milksteak
Favorite Hobby: Magnets
Staff role: Head honco (they call me Editor-In-Chief some days), Interviews, Reviews, Misc. Articles about everything
Short Bio: I am both terrible at talking about myself and amazing. It depends on my mood. Right now? Right now I'm watching TV, so I'll keep it short and simple. I grew up reading Spider-Man comics, and my favorite character was Venom/Eddie Brock. I started this here website back in May when I needed a place to rant and defend the Wolverine movie. I enjoyed it, and I needed a place for the world to know. The site then slowly evolved as people started coming and reading my rants, and now we're here today on this glorious place I've created with the help of four fine individuals. So enjoy the site, and if you need anything at all, my e-mail's always open, and I'm very responsive.

Gilbert Short
Alias: Gil
Age: 25
Location: Richmond, CA
LCBS Of Choice: Stand-Up Comics on San Pablo Avenue in El Cerrito. Sometimes Comic Relief on Shattuck in Berkeley.
Abilities: I’m able to find some sort of enjoyment in the worst of the comic movies. I’ve been known to bust out a “That’s what she said” before anyone else can even process what happened.
Weakness: kiwi. That stuff kills me. So You Think You Can Dance is also more entertaining than it should be.
Favorite Characters: Superman, Green Lantern, Spider-Man, Darkhawk, Elijah Snow, Scott Pilgrim, Psylocke,
Favorite Comics (all time): X-Men, Superman family, Spider-Man family. Jeph Loeb’s (shut up) Superman/Batman run, Scott Pilgrim, Planetary
Favorite Comics (current): Fables, the Walking Dead, Secret Six, Green Lantern/Green Lantern Corps, Incredible Hercules, Astonishing X-Men
Staff Role: Writer/Reviewer, resident Superman fanboy
Short Bio: I’m just a city boy, born and raised in south Detroit. Ok, maybe not really. I’ve been reading comics for a long time. I remember picking up my first comic when I was but a wee youngin’, I saw a Web of Spider-Man book with a hologram on it and kind of fell in love. I picked up my first issue of Wizard shortly after that, I’ve been reading ever since. There were a couple stretches of time when I didn’t due to monetary constraints, but other than that, it’s been pretty consistent. I happen to love TV and movies, and sped a lot of time watching them. Some of my favorite shows are The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, Lost, Battlestar Galactica, Buffy and Angel , Bones, and Glee. I’m also an avid music fan, and even have a tattoo of the Thrice logo on my back. Don’t hate.

David Harper
Age: 25
Location: Anchorage, AK
LCBS Of Choice: Bosco's - Spenard
Favorite Comics (all time): Preacher, Y: The Last Man, Bone, Scott Pilgrim, Planetary, Blankets
Favorite Comics (current): Fables, The Walking Dead, Ex-Machina, The Goon, Criminal, Secret Warriors, Secret Six
Staff Role: Interviews, Reviews, OGN Reviewer
Short Bio: I'm a young, pop culture obsessed marketing professional who grew up reading comics. I have an almost disgusting amount of comics really, but would have even more if I hadn't quit reading comics for a 3 to 4 year period. I once sent a letter to Pia Guerra thanking her for getting me back into comics because her and BKV's creation Y: The Last Man was the impetus for my return to the comic book world. Besides that, I love writing (my personal blog is called A Slice of Fried Gold), reading, sports (basketball and frisbee golf are my favorite to play, football is my favorite to watch), and being completely ridiculous with my friends.
Also, Halloween is the best holiday ever, mostly because making costumes is an absolute blast.

Brandon Burpee
Alias: Burpee
Age: 25
Location: Anchorage, AK
LCS: Bosco’s on Spenard. Never the Dimond location...
Abilities: Humor with a hint of foul mouth video casting complemented by a B.S. degree in superheroes. I can also do the Sponge Bob voice like a champ.
Weakness: Love for “lamer” characters that often times gets me made fun of at my local shop.
Favorite Comics (all time): X-Men, Y: The Last Man, Batman, New Avengers, Green Lantern
Favorite Comics (current): Green Lantern, X-Force, Amazing Spider-Man,
New Avengers, JSA
Staff Role: Writer/Reviewer and Video Caster
Short Bio: I’m a mild mannered fanman who has been reading comics for 20 years. I learned to read using comics, Where The Wild Things Are and Dr. Seuss books. Comics are in my blood and I’ve stuck with them except for a stint at the beginning of college where I was too broke to afford them. I am currently finishing up a B.A. in Psychology that has taken me 8 misguided years. I am happily married with a son named Dexter Xavier Burpee (yes, THE Xavier). I spend most of my time shooting b-ball outside of my school and trying to raise Dex to enjoy the art form of comics. Which so far involves him wearing comic clothing and eating his FCBD comics that he got this year. I also do a comic review show via YouTube called Burpee’s Comic Book Asylum. Non-comic related interests are sports, beer, music and pro wrestling.

Julie Humphrey
Alias: Jules, or "Insert source of fandom here" Fangirl
Age: 21
Location: Concord, CA
Abilities: Having a well of knowledge for random, and sometimes useless information, to a point. Combining random words into one with a 50-50 chance of said word sounding either witty/amusing or stupid. The useless talent of being able to memorize/sing songs in Japanese, but being unable to know what over 90% of the words mean.
Weaknesses: Japanese food/drinks (including snacks. Pocky: it's like love on a stick), cats (I think Matt is now my rival in the feline department now *glares*), shiny objects, things that look soft (I have to touch them), things that make me go "Awww, it's so cute!", sales at my favorite stores Gamestop, EB Games, Borders, Hot Topic [though they kinda disappoint me now], etc. I don't do Abercrombie or Forever 21. That's for girls. Wait...
LCBS Of Choice: I haven't been there in a while, but I've always liked Flying Colors Comics on Treat Boulevard at Oak Grove Road in my hometown of Concord.
Favorite Characters: Alucard from Hellsing is the jam. He is probably the only manga/anime character that still puts me into fangirl mode. I also love Kamina and Viral from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. They're pretty badass. As for non-manga/anime, Catwoman. I mean c'mon, she's a chick, in a leather (or latex) catsuit, and has a whip. Can you seriously deny her badassery?
Favorite Comics (all time): Some of these I still need to finish, but they're Hellsing, Saiyuki, Chobits, Tenchi Muyo, Trigun, and Ranma 1/2. Outside of manga, I've always loved Catwoman comics, I used to collect them as well as Danger Girl when I was younger.
Favorite Comics (current): I'll just list ones I plan on reading that I'm looking forward to, I'm a bit behind on newer releases. Chrno Crusade, Nodame Cantabile, the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni series, and anything else I think is worth a try.
Staff Role: Reviews/Token anime girl
Short Bio: I'm your average not-so-average geeky chick. I got into comics by the time I was 5 or 6 years old, and as I got older like many others in my generation, I found myself lost in the wonderful world of big eyes and small mouths (AKA manga/anime). In elementary school Pokemon was the start to my gaming and anime-watching/manga-reading ways, then by middle school Toonami was my everyday after-school activity, and I played my N64 more than I probably should have. I like learning new things about pop culture, and different cultures in general when the opportunity present itself (AKA Wikipedia/Google magic in my free time). I'm big on music, I refer to myself as a music junkie, and my tastes are pretty eclectic. Come to think of it my tastes for most things are pretty eclectic. I'm not really a fan of TV shows for the most part, but I do love House and a few other select shows. I'm a believer that pretty much everything happens for a reason, and I like to live life to the fullest when I'm not being a hermit. My first (and so far only) tattoo is an expression of how I like to live. You're not upstaging me with that Thrice tat, Gil. *shakes fist*
