DC Drops a Deuce on Watchmen

Rich Johnston over at Bleeding Cool is reporting some rather alarming news for comic fans: rumors are swirling that DC Comics is going to not just sequelize Watchmen, but turn it into a veritable cash cow of mini-series.
You can read the details at Bleeding Cool, but the story seems to be this - when Paul Levitz was Publisher and President of DC Comics, he went out of his way to block any attempts to even touch the undisputed champion title of super hero comics, even if Alan Moore did completely disown Levitz and DC as a whole. Yet when Levitz stepped down, Senior VP and Executive Editor Dan Didio saw an opportunity. He, to quote Johnston,
"is determined to impress new bosses by building on DC’s biggest selling comic book of all time."Evidently Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons have the right of first refusal with this project, so there is the smallest of chances (can't emphasize that enough) that they may be able to mitigate this epic disaster. But the odds on that happening are likely about the same as myself becoming the President of The Sentry's fan club. In other words, it ain't happening.
As this rumor starts coming together or falling apart, we'll keep you up to date. Definitely visit Bleeding Cool because Johnston is the man for rumor mongering and scoops.
If they actually make a Watchmen 2 and/or prequels, you can bet fans will likely riot and effigies of the creators who take it on will likely be sacrificed. You can also bet it will make DC boatloads of money.
I can't wait for Matt's review of Watchmen 2: Electric Boogaloo. I'm fairly certain he will turn into a Red Lantern while writing it, spitting up acid blood in the general direction of DC Editorial in hopes of harming Didio. Perhaps in some ways this will be worth it.
Note: This story is reflecting a rumor. No confirmation or even any suggestion of truth has come from DC Comics. However, Johnston is often right. Let's hope this is not one of those times.

Since Johnston didn't site any sources (other than the one relating to movie sequels), I'm hoping this is all just a misunderstanding from the news of Morrison's upcoming multiverse-spanning series.
Please, PLEASE let this be the case. Enough people want to kill DiDio already.
Yeah, I'm really hoping he's wrong. I have to admit, I don't love Watchmen to the degree that others do, but there are just some things you don't do. This is one of them.
Sounds like Dan Didio's work. I really love DC's universe, but I can't stand the direction Didio takes the company at times. Countdown, the massive size of Blackest Night which should have been very limited, and now THIS!?! Of course no one at DC will stop him and some writer will jump at the bit to write the comics.
Still if they are going forward with the project which writer's would you like to see attached to the project? I think Warren Ellis might be the man for a Watchmen Sequel.
if there were anybody who, if given the assignment, could pull off something that wasn't a giant piece of shit, and call it a Watchmen sequel or prequel or whatever, Warren Ellis is probably the only person who could. however, i sincerely doubt that he, or any of the people that are of similar notoriety, would touch this project with a ten foor clown pole for fear of violent uprising against them and their families.
There is always Jeph Loeb.
HAHAHAHA sorry couldn't say that with a serious face. Loeb's lost his touch.
Yeah, I'm sure there are plenty of writers who could write a decent (if not unnecessary) Watchmen sequel/prequel.
Would they? Hell no. I can't think of any creator who would because you'd immediately burn bridges all across the industry with that move. Ellis would never touch it.
If anyone does it that can get away with it and make it quality, it'd be Dave Gibbons. He's the only person who this actually could safely land with in my mind. He's a quality writer, knows what Moore thinks of the characters and where they could go, and obviously has a visual grasp of the world.
I don't even know where to begin with my commentary on this ... so I won't.
I can't wait for Watchmen 2! hahahaha
Here is a good question. I am certain some of us are amateur comic book writers. Now if DC offered you the job would you take it? Even if you will be known as the guy who ruined watchmen, but it would give you the biggest break one could ask?
Good GOD no! How would you ever even write a sequel? I wouldn't even know how to begin with coming up with a follow up idea. Half the main cast is gone! What is there left to say, in all honesty? Haha
this is pretty crazy even for didio standards....
I would do it no questions asked. It's such ridiculous exposure. Good or bad you're name is now known. I would do it. Not sure it would be good because I agree it shouldn't BE done in the first place but i'd do it. I mean how many people who complain about it will still buy it and read it? You'd be an instant top seller.
If Moore and Gibbons want to do it, then by all means, let them. I don't want a sequel, but if it had to happen, I'd certainly want it to be them doing it.
Anyone else does it though, and I agree that fans would riot. Hopefully the backlash would be enough to kill the book/film.
No self-respecting writer would do this, no. But DiDio just took over writing Outsiders, so "if you want something done, do it yourself."
...sigh.
