"Mouse Guard: Legends of the Guard" Set for Release

- Posted by David Harper on Wednesday, March 31, 2010

Given that we've already spoken to series creator David Petersen on two occasions, it's pretty easy to figure out: we're pretty big fans of Mouse Guard over at Multiversity Comics. Over his two volumes (which he performed literally every aspect of the creative process on) Fall 1152 and Winter 1152, Petersen has told epic tales that give us characters of surprising depth and shocking warmth. It's easy to see why this series is such a sensation while reading it.

Archaia Entertainment officially announced today that we'll be given a follow up sooner rather than later, as a number of other creators will be given the opportunity to play in Petersen's sandbox. Exceptional creators like Gene Ha, Terry Moore, Mark Smylie, and Karl Kerschl will be given the keys to the castle in Mouse Guard: Legends of the Guard, a series that launches in May. Check out the full press release after the jump, along with more stunning images from this series.

Also, if you missed it with we spoke with David about this series earlier this month as well.

Shattered Dimensions Reveals Spider-Man: Noir

- Posted by Walter Richardson on Tuesday, March 30, 2010

Activision recently announced a new Spider-Man video game to follow the heels of 2008's Web of Shadows entitled Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. The game will follow the path of four alternate-dimensional web-slingers as their separate tales fit together to solve one big problem. So far we know of two of these dimensions: the normal, Amazing Spider-Man universe and the Marvel Noir universe. Can I hear an amen for that second one? Gamespot also gave the comic and gaming community alike a first look into the game with both an interview with Activision as well as assorted gameplay clips. I'm a bit off-put by the dizzying first person view (though it looks like it is optional), but it looks interesting for the most part. By far the most exciting part to the comic community, however, is that the script will be written by none other than Dan Slott, a man who loves Spidey as much as Grant Morrison and JMS love Superman (which is a lot). With no date set for when the next two will be revealed, be sure to discuss what version of Spider-Man you want to see in Shattered Dimensions, and expect the game to be released this fall.

New Iron Man 2 Poster!

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Tuesday, March 30, 2010

Check that bad boy out. Of course, it's remarkably similar to the poster for the first film, but I'd go so far out on a limb as to say that's probably the point! Shocker. I know. Either way, it looks great.

Needless to say, with May right around the corner now, expectations are high and everyone is hoping for the best. Be sure to check Multiversity in a few months for a giant review from almost all of us!

Small Press Spotlight: City of Glass

- Posted by Steve Ponzo on Tuesday, March 30, 2010

Daniel Quinn is an author who writes under the pseudonym of William Wilson, he inhabits the traits of Wilson’s character Max Work to protect Peter Stillman from Peter Stillman. All the while impersonating detective Paul Auster, who as it turns out, isn’t a detective at all but an author who happens to share the name of the author of the very book we’re all reading. Confused yet? Good you’re supposed to be.

The Short Report: WonderCon!

- Posted by Gilbert Short on Tuesday, March 30, 2010

As if you didn't know, WonderCon is at the end of this week, running all the way through the weekend, including Easter Sunday. But that won't stop me! Noooooo. I'll be there with some help, hopefully, to grab news, information, and hopefully that elusive Geoff Johns interview we're all DYING to get. Oh man, a guy can dream, right?

That being said, in lieu if a column about how much I think Batman is misunderstood or how David is really the biggest Twilight fan I know, I'm going to share with you my rough itinerary with possible panels I'll be going to, and others if time or help allows. I have a few volunteers though, so we should be good!

My plans follow in the cut, and from here on, I'm opening it up to you. Assuming I can get interviews with any of the creators or actors we love, I want people to submit questions either here, or in our forum with any questions you'd like me to ask nicely, ok? Those bathroom liaisons are bad enough...I need a wide stance....

(and no, Matt, I won't ask Nic Cage why he's a terrible actor!)

Review: The Killer Volume Two

- Posted by David Harper on Tuesday, March 30, 2010

When I finally read The Killer's first volume from Matz and Luc Jacamon and brought to America by Archaia, I was in love. I'd heard the towering hype behind this title and it was every bit as good as the sentiment that had been shared by critics and fans alike. Its neo-noir pastiche, stellar character work, and exciting visuals from modern genius Jacamon found me rapt with attention and eager for more.

That comes in the form of this second volume, out now from the same duo and once again from Archaia. Does it reach the levels of the first volume? Find out after the jump.

"Chuck Versus the American Hero" Review

- Posted by David Harper on Tuesday, March 30, 2010

This week's episode of Chuck finds our boy a full fledged spy, although still a horribly love stricken one. This episode covers his one week period as he tries to win back Sarah and possibly shut down The Ring for good with Shaw in the process. Note to Chuck fans: this episode actually marks the penultimate episode of the original season order that the show got from NBC. If it seems like the season is near its end, that's why. But it's not the end of the season at all - we have six more episodes after next week. Yay!

Check out the review after the jump.

Take Your First Look At The Scott Pilgrim Videogame!

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Tuesday, March 30, 2010

I am so excited to type that headline.

This past weekend at PAX, German game developer Attract Mode and Ubisoft had a small bit of their 8-Bit Scott Pilgrim video game that will be coming out in coordination with the final volume of the book as well as the movie. Ever since this was first announced by (at least, where I saw it) Bryan Lee O' Malley, this has easily been a highly anticipated game for myself since I love Scott Pilgrim and I love 8-Bit games.

The game will feature you as Scott Pilgrim traversing various levels to fight Ramona's 7 evil exes in order to be able to date her and live happily ever after. Hooray! NOT ONLY THAT, but the theme song (if not more) is being provided by the fantastic bit crushing band Anamanaguchi, who have been a favorite of mine since they released a free EP online (and their album last year, Dawn Metropolis, was one of my favorites all year). Anamanaguchi performed the song live for the packed convention hall, and it was glorious.

Check behind the cut for the theme song, and be sure to check out Attract Mode for more fantastic screen caps.

AMC Takes "The Walking Dead" To Series

- Posted by David Harper on Monday, March 29, 2010

In a surprising move, AMC ordered The Walking Dead - an adaptation of Robert Kirkman's series of the same name from Image Comics - to series today without a pilot shot or even the lead cast. It's surprising in the order the events have transpired, but it is not likely to be something AMC ultimately regrets. Given that this is one of the most critically lauded books in the market that also comes with a ravenous fanbase that perhaps puts the zombies in the title to shame, it has a built in fan base. That Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption) is writing/directing the pilot and providing the framework of the first six episodes alongside Kirkman is incredible as well, and something that indicates to AMC (and fans) that this will be a well crafted series. AMC has really taken a leap as perhaps the premiere network for dramatic series (with Mad Men and Breaking Bad) in recent years, and I feel like this can only further entrench their reputation.

However, with only the (spoiler alert to non-fans) not long for this Earth character of Shane cast so far, we're still a ways out. The series launches in time for Halloween in October, and will assuredly be watched by yours truly. Here's hoping they land the right Rick Grimes, because he is massively important to the success of this series. You'll hear all the news about the series here as we get it.

Congrats to Darabont, Kirkman, Image Comics, Charlie Adlard, Tony Moore, and everyone else who has helped this series along the way. From a long time fan, I can say I greatly appreciate it. Can't wait to see this show.

Superman's First Appearance Soars Back to the Top

- Posted by David Harper on Monday, March 29, 2010

In an ever growing period of escalation, a copy of Action Comics #1 (the first appearance of Superman) sold for a record setting amount of $1.5 million on ComicsConnect.com. This is on the heels of Detective Comics #27 breaking the record in Feburary which had just been set two days by another copy of Action Comics #1. In a period of 2 months, the most expensive comic jumped from $317,000 (for another, presumably poorer quality copy of Action Comics #1) to this new number of $1.5 million. Quite the increase from the cover price of 10 cents.

Speculators assume that this is the peak for at least a little while: what other comic could top it? Little do they know I'm about to put my near-mint run of Rom: Space Knight up for auction, which assuredly set off a bidding war the likes the world has never known. Get excited America.

Hate Mail Vol. 1 Issue #04

- Posted by Joshua Mocle on Monday, March 29, 2010

Wherein Our Hero Rages Against the Machine

Alright I’m in Canada and have better things to do than write this column…so its gonna be short, sweet and punch-packing…just like Puck! (Get it? Canada? Puck? Ehh? Ehhhh???? God…read your Alpha Flight you dinks…that joke is GOLD.)

ANYWAY

As I was reading the afterward in this week’s first issue of Nemesis that I pre-ordered two months ago then bought by accident because I can’t read emails properly, I noticed something I had read about a while ago and forgotten about but that pissed me off then and pisses me off now. It seems that, given the widespread success of previous Mark Millar creator owned properties (Wanted, Kick-Ass) that, in fact, studios began courting Millar for the rights to his newest property, Nemesis, BEFORE THE BOOK WAS EVEN ANNOUNCED.

Now, lets rewind for a bit. Remember Wanted? The fantastic, semi-futuristic 2003-2004 Super-Villain mini-series put out by Millar and artist JG Jones on Top Cow? You know…the one that featured a world that had been conquered and divided up by some of the most sadistic and legitimately evil super-villains ever imagined? The super violent, borderline smut, masterpiece that so many have come to love?

Remember how it was adapted to the big screen?

Wizard Relaunching with Mark Millar Guest-Editing Issue #228

- Posted by David Harper on Monday, March 29, 2010

In an attempt to entrench himself as the most overexposed creator in comics, Mark Millar will be guest-editing an upcoming issue of the soon-to-be relaunched Wizard Magazine in July according to Bleeding Cool. Rich Johnston has an entertaining idea of what will happen in said issue, but I can tell you what: this still won't get me to buy the magazine, more than likely.

In the time we're in, there just isn't a lot of purpose to a comic magazine of Wizard's nature. All of the news and opinion pieces you get from them you can get much faster from CBR, Newsarama, ComicsAlliance, The Weekly Crisis, or hell, ourselves. While it was a huge thrill to read it when I was younger, there simply were not any other options then. I may buy this issue simply to see what their relaunch looks like and to see if they figured out a way to make their medium viable again, but I feel as if it may turn out to be more morbid curiosity than anything.

Dani Moonstar Gets Ready For Siege In This Week's New Mutants (#11)

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Monday, March 29, 2010

This is easily my most anticipated issue of any Siege tie-in: one of my favorite new books, one of my favorite new writers, and one of the best artists who doesn't work enough all getting together for one issue! That's right - New Mutants this week will be written by Kieron Gillen and drawn by Niko Henrichon! With a cover by Terry Dodson (whose covers I really enjoy, if not his interiors most of the time) and a great plot (in which Dani becomes one of Hela's Valkyrie's to collect the dead from Siege), I can guarantee you this will be an issue you don't want to miss. Be sure to check out this preview of the issue if for some reason you're not convinced already to get it:

SIEGE BLOCKBUSTER TIE-IN!! Back in DARK AVENGERS/UNCANNY X-MEN:UTOPIA, Dani Moonstar made a deal with Hela. Now, the mistress of Hel is calling in her marker. With all the Asgardians falling in the Siege of Asgard, someone needs to deal with the dead. And who better to do so than a Valkyrie. But where is Dani supposed to be bringing these dead? Brought to you by a guest creative team of Kieron Gillen (THOR, S.W.O.R.D.) and Niko Henrichon (PRIDE OF BAGHDAD).

The issue comes out this week at a price of $2.99. Be sure to keep your eyes open for a review of it from yours truly!

The JLA regroups in Justice League Of America #43

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Monday, March 29, 2010

Justice League has been all over the place as of late. Ever since Cry for Justice, the team has been in high disarray, and now that Blackest Night is coming to an end we're finally getting ready to go face first into the new status quo of the team. With this week's issue, we see the end of the first arc of James Robinson and Mark Bagley's team-up on the book. With arguably one of the coolest covers we'll see all week (I love the legacy positions, and we'll see if Burpee agrees), DC has posted a preview of this week's issue:

Following the decision that occurred in JUSTICE LEAGUE: CRY FOR JUSTICE and the events of JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE RISE AND FALL SPECIAL #1, the World’s Greatest Heroes must come to terms with who they are and what they represent. Meanwhile, an all-new danger threatens the existence of everything past and present in the exciting finale of “Team History.”

The issue comes out this week at the price of $3.99. Look for a review of it from yours truly.

Multiversity 101: Understanding Grant Morrison

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Sunday, March 28, 2010

Last week when I wrote the Batman article, I noticed that a few of the comments through links mentioned that it gave the reader "a new appreciation for Grant Morrison's style." As much as this is a legitimate site for news, reviews, and everything in between, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that a large part of it is an excuse for myself to be a Grant Morrison fanboy. Part of the clue to this is the fact that the title of the site, Multiversity Comics, comes from the title of an unreleased comic book written by Morrison (the fact that the concept of the multiverse fits in well with us covering large portions of comic-dom is convenient too). You can also see it in the frequent referencing of his work, and how high his books often score when reviewed by yours truly. I have been rather shameless about my fanboy-ness for the man's writing, and I frequently declare him as the greatest writer currently in comics today (Seven Soldiers is the best comic I've ever read).

With that in mind, I realize that Grant Morrison is one of the most polarizing writers in the medium today. His high concept style can often times be off-putting to many readers, and it's through this that Morrison gets called names like "gimmicky." It's not a gimmick, it's a style, and it just happens to be unconventional. Unlike a lot of modern writers, Morrison doesn't telegraph his writing, and that leaves a lot of casual readers in the dust when he comes in to write a book.

So: having read more than half of his rather large body of work and being incredibly familiar with his writing style, allow me to talk to you today a bit about Grant Morrison and how you can enjoy his comics more.

A Crisis of Chronology: Cosmic Marvel

- Posted by Walter Richardson on Sunday, March 28, 2010

With the release of Annihilation, Marvel's cosmic setting got the boost of attention that it really needed. It was easily accessible to new readers, and caused said newer readers to become well acquainted with Marvel's until then under-appreciated space tales. If you've read Annihilation and the series that have spun out of it (Nova, Annihilation: Conquest, and Guardians of the Galaxy), you may have gained a hunger for the original stories that set up this great setting. And so do I bring you a (slightly abridged) history of Marvel's cosmic setting! Just follow the jump for all sorts of space adventures.

Can DC Become Number One?

- Posted by David Harper on Saturday, March 27, 2010

At this year's annual ComicsPRO members meeting (a meeting dedicated to the progress of direct market comic book retailers), new DC co-publishers made quite the splash.

Didio said:

“Our goal is to beat Marvel...We have to see if there are tools we can use to make us No. 1.”

Didio and Lee emphasized to the gathered retailers that the direct market is their primary focus and that they will aid retailers as they can (or as Lee said, “I am your superfan."

This has been big news today, but really, it's unsurprising. Isn't it the goal of any business to get to the top of their respective industry? It's not like you see companies thriving for third or fourth. Hearing Lee and Didio say something of that sort is a big step, however they have a lot of work to do if they plan on surpassing the House of Ideas.

Is it possible? Well, let's take a look at what they're facing after the jump.

Comics Legend Dick Giordano Passes Away at 77

- Posted by David Harper on Saturday, March 27, 2010

Today, legendary creator and editor Dick Giordano passed away at the age of 77.

Giordano, for those that do not know, was as esteemed in the industry as anyone for his inking work he did with Neal Adams, on Crisis for Infinite Earths, and John Byrne's late 80's relaunch of the Superman titles. He also acted as the Editor-in-Chief of Charlton Comics during their prime, as well as the Vice President and Executive Editor of DC Comics from 1983 to 1993. During this time he also managed to help relaunch most of DC's characters as well as launch Vertigo Comics with Jenette Kahn and Paul Levitz, beginning a movement of bringing esteemed British writers like Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman to mainstream comics.

He's an extremely underrated individual in terms of worth to the industry, even serving on the board for the organization that would eventually become The Hero Iniaitive. From what I understand, the value he offered

Frequent collaborator and business partner Bob Layton sent a message out to the comic community about his passing:

Dear Friends & Colleagues,

It is my sorrowful duty to announce that legendary artist/editor/entrepreneur Dick Giordano passed away today.

Few could ever hope to match what he accomplished in his chosen profession, or to excel while maintaining great humor, compassion for his peers and an unwavering love for the art form.

His unique vision changed the comic industry forever and all of those who work in the business continue to share in the benefits of his sizable contributions.

I have been honored to call him a business partner, mentor and dear friend throughout the majority of my lifetime.

We will not see his like again.

Regretfully,
Bob Layton

Thank you and good afternoon, Dick Giordano.

San Diego, CA (March 26, 2010) – IDW Publishing and award-winning creator Darwyn Cooke are pleased to announce an exclusive prelude to The Outfit, the second of Richard Stark’s Parker novels that Cooke is adapting. Cooke’s initial Parker release, The Hunter, has been a critical and popular success, appearing on over 50 “best of the year” lists as well as the New York Times best-seller list.

Titled The Man With the Getaway Face: A Prelude to the Outfit, a limited number of copies will debut next week in San Francisco at WonderCon, one of the country’s leading comics and pop culture conventions. This 8”x12” preview book offers one entire chapter of The Outfit and will be included in the finished graphic novel, coming in October. Available for the bargain price of $2.00, the prelude will offer fans a beautiful introduction to The Outfit. Cooke, a special guest of WonderCon, will be on hand to sign copies at the IDW booth #519. WonderCon will be held April 2nd through the 4th at the Moscone Center.

The Man with the Getaway Face special is a fun and inexpensive way for new readers to check out Richard Stark's famous master criminal,” commented Cooke. “It's our hope that this oversized, underpriced kidney punch will pull them in to the violent world of Parker.”

In addition to debuting at WonderCon, the preview will be available in comic stores everywhere in July at the same low price and large size. Retailers should check the IDW section of the Diamond May Previews catalogue for details.

“We wanted to do something to make this preview special, something to make Darwyn’s incredible work really pop off the shelves,” said IDW Special Projects Editor, Scott Dunbier. “And at this size and price point, I think we’ve succeeded!”

Bulletproof is the final Guardian of the Globe

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Friday, March 26, 2010

There you have it: Bulletproof, who has spent too much time on the sidelines, is now a Guardian of the Globe for at least six issues. Of course he is not the final FINAL Guardian of the Globe - Kirkman confirmed there will be more members. However, this method of poking fun at Marvel and revealing some new characters was interesting none the less, and it's a good way to create some buzz for the upcoming mini.

That about wraps it up from Image and Kirkman for now, though. Newsarma has an interesting interview posted in which Kirkman further discusses his plans for the Guardians and the Viltrumite War. If interested, give it a look! He also teased that Obama and "Gary" Potter might still yet have some roles to play...

The book comes out in August, just in time to coincide with the biggest event Invincible has seen yet.

Friday Recommendation: Ron Marz's Green Lantern

- Posted by Walter Richardson on Friday, March 26, 2010

A bridge that I thought long burned down was rebuilt last week with the release of Green Lantern Corps #46: the original women in refrigerators debacle. What was meant to be a simple reference to previously established continuity instead opened up the old debate on the treatment of women in comics. While both Gil and Mocle discussed GLC #46 plenty, my main problem with those who often bring up the death of Alex DeWitt in these debates is not that I disagree with them; rather, I find that this single instance has caused so many people to just forget about how great Ron Marz's run on Green Lantern was. Follow the jump to find out why I feel that Marz's Green Lantern is an incredibly underrated gem.

Yeti Signs on to the Guardians of the Globe

- Posted by David Harper on Thursday, March 25, 2010

Day four of the unveiling of Image Comics upcoming mini-series Guardians of the Globe is here, and today we have...Yeti. His powers are...being a yeti. So that's neat and all. His quote is "Look tough, look tough, gotta look tough. I can't let anyone discover my secret." Apparently he's going to be another sasquatch character with a secret. Wait, never mind, there aren't a lot of those.

This team continues to be a fun one, staring with the previously established Robert Kirkman creation Brit, and since then we've seen new characters like the speedster Outrun and explosive boomerang tossing Aussie Captain Boom...I mean, Kaboomerang. As one of our readers pointed out before, it's fun seeing the new creations Kirkman comes up with. Even if they are yetis.

Guardians of the Globe launches in August.

Welcome back, friends of all ages, races, sizes and species! We've got a great round-up of comics for you this week, and an exciting book for our BOTW slot. I'd also like to remind you, we've got this brand new rating system up:

0: Uwe Boll will direct the adaptation of this comic
0.1 - 1: Burn upon touching
1- 1.9: Abysmal
2.0 - 2.9: Art. Writing. Editing. All bad.
3.0 - 3.9: You'd be a masochist to pick this up.
4.0 - 4.9: "I'll give it another month...but that was not good."
5.0 - 5.9: "Really? The Watcher? In the face? I guess it was fun."
6.0 - 6.9: "Hmm. That was decent."
7.0 - 7.9: Well made but a few problems
8.0 - 8.9: Nearly flawless
9.0 - 9.9: Outstanding
10: Perfection. Issue of the year contender

For those wondering, Pass would be anywhere from 0 to 3.9, Browse would be 4 to 6.9, and Buy would be from 7 to 10. So what are you waiting for? Hop on past the jump and enjoy!

Also, are there any books you'd like to see us review? Let us know in the comments, and one of us will get right on it! We'll also keep those books in mind for future weeks!

Review: Shuddertown #1

- Posted by David Harper on Thursday, March 25, 2010

Impulse purchases have really went away for me in the past few years in terms of comics. I've tried really hard to cut back just to what I like, so a concept must really draw me in or it must be a particularly exciting issue for me to grab it. This week saw one of those, as I read about Image Comics' Shuddertown this morning, looked at a preview this afternoon, and when I went to pick up my comics I had decided to purchase it. In my ever growing desire to expand my comic horizons, this was a risky shot.

Was it a successful one?

Find out after the jump.

Bassett Cast as Amanda Waller in "Green Lantern"

- Posted by David Harper on Thursday, March 25, 2010

Martin Campbell's Green Lantern's cast just keeps getting better and better, as today Angel Bassett joined as Dr. Amanda Waller. SuperheroHype posted it earlier today, as well as suggesting that she may be introduced to grease the wheels on a possible Suicide Squad film.

This continues the trend of picking the best actor for the role as opposed to the best fit, as clearly the frequently ripped and very fit Bassett does not exactly look like a character known as "The Wall" (it's not just her stern nature that earns her that nickname). As Matt Sturges just tweeted, "Angela Bassett is gonna have to eat a lot of sammiches in order to portray a convincing Amanda Waller. I'm just sayin'." Still, I think she could nail the role given previous acting jobs, and Waller is a great character who could be very interesting on film.

Green Lantern launches June 17th, 2011. As if you didn't know already.

"Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" Teaser Trailer Released

- Posted by David Harper on Thursday, March 25, 2010

The moment everyone has been waiting for is here: the teaser trailer to Edgar Wright's adaptation of Bryan Lee O'Malley's Scott Pilgrim series is here. I've watched it three times consecutively, and I can say wholeheartedly that I think Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is going to nail the look and feel of this beloved comic. The video game embellishments, the feel between Scott and Ramona, and the hilarious violence are all here, and it is glorious.

Also on display are the evil ex-boyfriends, with Chris Evans' Lucas Lee perhaps being featured most prominently. His role in the preview is perhaps the best of the whole trailer, as asks Ramona "'sup? How's life? He seems nice." shortly after whipping her boyfriend against a building and fist pumping and yelling "boom!" I feel like I leveled up just watching it.

My only question remains Michael Cera, who I like but have always been uncertain if he had the ability to bring Scott's cockiness to the equation. That remains to be seen.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World enters the arena August 13th of this year. Don't miss it.

Grant Morrison's 18 Days on the horizon!

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Thursday, March 25, 2010

Fans of Grant Morrison: rejoice! It has been announced that Dynamite Entertainment and Liquid Comics will be releasing a script book of Grant Morrison's as yet to be released 18 Days, an animated project Morrison has been working on with Liquid Comics which is a re-telling of the Indian Epic Mahabharata. While 18 Days is still in pre-production, you will now be able to get a collector's item which gives you not only a first look at the upcoming series, but also a look into Morrison's mind and how he writes his scripts (which, to me, is the most exciting element). The book will feature, as the press release states, "inner workings of the acclaimed writer’s process and features the original unedited scripts, story bible, character descriptions and commentary."

So what is it about? Well, take a look at this quote from the press release:

Grant Morrison’s 18 Days, is a re-imagining of the great Indian epic, Mahabharata and tells the story of three generations of super-warriors, meeting for the final battle of their age. The scale is epic, wherein the biggest armies ever conceived of face one another across the ultimate battlefield to decide the fate of the future. 18 Days follows the course of the climactic war that concludes the Third Age and begins the Dark Age we all now live in. It is the prototype for every war ever fought - and at its heart lies a warning for all of us and a message that can change lives.

You can count me in. Morrison has been a big time fan of Indian lore, and those that have read previous work know that all too well (heck, just look at Vimanarama!). Now we get a book of scripts and inside look on his work? Heck yes! He has released a book before of scripts of plays and such, but it's been long since out of print. Considering I regularly praise him as the greatest writer in comics today, you can be sure the second I find where to pre-order this, it will be pre-ordered (just as I pre-ordered All-Star Superman so I could get all the back-up stuff from him and Quitely).

There is a preview up at Newsarama, and if you're interested please click here. It looks awesome. For those interested in more about the Mahabharata, please click here and let the knowledge flow.

For the press release in it's entirety, check behind the jump!

Who Won't Wield The Shield?

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Thursday, March 25, 2010

You've seen who WILL wield the shield... now are you curious who won't? No? Well, allow me to entice you!

While we know that the obvious answer to that question is "everyone else," Marvel has decided to release a humorous one-shot in order to showcase a little talent and poke fun at themselves. It seems that lately, Marvel has been REALLY big on publishing more humorous work and poking fun at their own practices (as well as others), and that's exactly why Who Won't Wield The Shield now exists.

Coming out on April 21st, this one shot will be released and will feature three highly amusing stories:

  • The first story will star Forbush Man written by Jason Aaron, who promises that EVERYONE WILL DIE!
  • The second story will star Doctor America and will be written by Matt Fraction. Fraction describes Doctor America as, "Dr. Stephen Rogers, transformed by the Super-Satan formula into the pentagram-bespangled sentinel of the arcane, Doctor America." He will spend his portion of the issue fighting Richard Milhous Manson, aka the sinister Red Dick, and his genocidal assistant Bebe Rebeyonder.
  • The final story arc will be written by Stuart Moore, and will star THE GOLDEN AGE DEADPOOL. What?! That's right - 'Wheezy' Wilson, the Golden Age Deadpool you've never heard of.

I'm not going to lie - I wasn't going to buy this book, and now I most definitely am. A book that is purposefully made to be a joke with talent like Jason Aaron behind the wheel? Count me in. I am all for silly comics by talented people, and those of you who have read Fraction's work outside of Iron Man and X-Men (such as Five Fists Of Science and Casanova) know that he has a very odd but very good sense of humor. I'm betting this issue really will be pretty amusing. For the full humorous article, in which Moore, Fraction, and Aaron break down their roles, check out Marvel's press release here.

Get Amped For The Return Of The Flash With Flash: Secret Files and Origins 2010

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Thursday, March 25, 2010

Blackest Night is almost over, and The Flash: Rebirth finally ended. You know what that means, don't you? It's time for Barry Allen and the Flash family to make their triumphant return to the DCU with an on-going series, penned by Geoff Johns and artistically rendered by the great Francis Manapul. The duo, having just finished a fantastic run in Adventure Comics with Superboy, are all set and ready to release issue one, and to help hype it DC has not only been publishing previews of the first issue, but will also be publishing a Secret Files and Origins issue to act as an additional prelude to the series.

So take a look at a nice preview of the book over at DCU's The Source blog, or for more information see after the jump.

Kaboomerang Joins the Guardians

- Posted by David Harper on Wednesday, March 24, 2010

Member three has now been announced for the upcoming Image mini-series co-written by Robert Kirkman, Guardians of the Globe. This title that takes place in the Invincible universe will now co-star Kaboomerang, a character whose tagline on his character card is the most entertaining yet.

"Yeah, mate. I know they're supposed to come back to me, but I make them blow up first."

Incredibly literal, yet still strangely funny. My excitement continues to grow for this book. It's hard for me to not want to support a book that stars someone named Kaboomerang, but perhaps that's just a me thing.

Guardians of the Globe launches in August.

Don't Miss "Phonogram: The Singles Club"

- Posted by David Harper on Wednesday, March 24, 2010

Today is a big day for two of Multiversity Comics favorite creators: Art Battle star and writer Kieron Gillen and artist extraordinaire Jamie McKelvie. Today sees the release of the second (and hopefully not final) volume of their critically acclaimed Image title Phonogram today, titled Phonogram: The Singles Club.

I picked up the trade myself at Emerald City ComiCon a few weeks ago and we at Multiversity really hope you do as well. If our recommendation doesn't sell you, check out the first issue yourself for free. If that doesn't draw you in, well...shame on you. Look for the duo's work in Siege: Loki coming in a few weeks as well.

Check out Haunt #1 Free!

- Posted by David Harper on Wednesday, March 24, 2010

From the minds of Robert Kirkman (Invincible, The Walking Dead) and Todd McFarlane comes Haunt, a book about...well, let's just quote the solicit.

Daniel Kilgore is dragged into his estranged brother Kurt’s secret life of murder and espionage... by his ghost. With no training whatsoever, guided by the spirit of his secret-agent brother, Daniel must now solve his brother’s murder and save the world – or die trying! It all starts here, people: Witness the birth of HAUNT!

That title features pencils by Ryan Ottley, inks by McFarlane, and layouts by Greg Capullo, and just wrapped up it's first arc. While it wasn't great, it was a decent enough read that could become far more intriguing going forward and features phenomenal art from Ottley. Newsarama has the first issue up for free at their site, and if you haven't checked it out yet here's a good opportunity to do so.

If you enjoy it, don't forget to check out the first trade of the series for just $9.99. It's a steal of a deal.

"Iron Man: Extremis" Goes In Motion

- Posted by David Harper on Wednesday, March 24, 2010

Fans of Warren Ellis' and Adi Granov's Iron Man: Extremis rejoice! Marvel will be turning that arc into their next motion comic just in time for Iron Man 2, as the first episode will launch on iTunes April 16th for $1.99 with a new episode being added every two weeks after that.

Check out a trailer for the Extremis motion comic here, but this should be a good one for fans of motion comics. Which...I am not.

Whatever Happened to the Writer of Tomorrow?

- Posted by David Harper on Wednesday, March 24, 2010

When Wildstorm’s Ex-Machina ends, it won’t just mark the culmination of one of the best series in the industry. When the last page turns, that will be it in terms of Brian K. Vaughan’s contributions to the world of comics for the foreseeable future.

Often regaled as one of the freshest voices in comics and long considered one of the top talents as well, we’ve seen the Eisner Award winning creator’s comic book contributions dwindle down to practically nothing in recent years. In a time where the writers he worked up the ranks with are taking on more and more and new scribes are crashing the scene on a semi-regular basis, the man colloquially known as BKV by his fans has seemingly disappeared.

Whatever happened to the writer of tomorrow, and when will we see him next? Let’s take a look at his career to date, and perhaps from that we can figure out when and where we’ll see Vaughan again.

Advance Review: FVZA #3 (along with a short recap)

- Posted by Gilbert Short on Wednesday, March 24, 2010

Writer: David Hine
Illustrators: Roy Allen Martinez & Wayne Nichols

Radical is good at two things. They have a great reputation for telling stories that seem tailor made for the movies, and they have some of the best painted art you can find on the printed page. FVZA is one of those titles. How is it though? Well, follow the cut and you’ll see my thoughts on the horror title whose finale comes out today.

What Is O.M.I.T.?

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Wednesday, March 24, 2010

Marvel first teased this at ECCC, but now we have a teaser. What is O.M.I.T.? And what does Joe Quesada and Paolo Rivera have to do with it? What on Earth could a writer/artist have to do with an artist and a mysterious title? How could this possibly all connect?

Any ideas?
