Scott Pilgrim Vs The World Official Trailer - REVEALED!

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Monday, May 31, 2010

The fans literally demanded it, and now you can see it: the official Scott Pilgrim trailer! Giving us a much better look at what to expect from the movie, the basic gist is: holy accuracy, Batman! Seriously - if you've read the books, then you can literally see it come to life in this trailer, from 1-ups to giant hammers and visual sound effects! Needless to say, it's highly possible that Scott Pilgrim could be the single best and most accurate comic book movie ever.

Needless to say, the excitement for August's approach just skyrocketed. Did you enjoy the trailer? Leave your comments and let's chat about what you liked and didn't like!

A Crisis of Chronology: New Krypton

- Posted by Walter Richardson on Sunday, May 30, 2010

If you caught this past week's reviews at Multiversity, you should know that the massive New Krypton saga had finally ended and that I was a big fan of it. However, despite DC's best efforts with their Free Comic Book Day offering, War of the Supermen #0, the final stand for the New Kryptonians was a bit difficult for newer readers to get into (unless they were just looking for some action). This is to be expected, though, when one is reading the climax of almost four years of stories. If you missed out the first time around, follow the jump to enter the strange world of New Krypton.

Welcome to the LOST retrospective, brought to you by the dynamic duo of Matt and Crit, who you know from the weekly articles reviewing and recapping each episode. Each day of this week we will take a look at one season, each of us picking our five favorite episodes from the season. Will we pick the same episodes? Yes, most likely. But when it comes to LOST (and when it comes to Crit and Matt, really) there are bound to be purposeful coincidences.

The Multiversity Casting Couch: The other Avengers

- Posted by Gilbert Short on Saturday, May 29, 2010

We already have our major players in the Avengers, with Robert Downey, Jr., Edward Norton, Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth each playing the iconic roles of some of the most famous members of Marvel’s PREMIERE superteam, but who is going to play the others? We can’t go into an Avengers movie without Hank Pym or Simon Williams, can we? Well, Simon Williams…MAYBE, but Hank Pym, never! We have to make our guesses at who would make great fits for the characters, and I’m going to take a shot at who I think Joss Whedon himself will cast.

Much like Kevin Smith, Whedon has a tendency to use the same actors in different roles. Summer Glau was on no less than THREE shows he helmed, Angel, Firefly, and Dollhouse, respectively. Then there are actors like Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, and Adam Baldwin. So don’t be surprised to see a few familiar faces if you’re a Whedon fan. It was undoubtedly intentional, and for that reason. Another tactic Whedon uses is to cast unknowns, so another way to describe my picks would not necessarily be picking an actor, but a TYPE.

Also, if I didn’t include your favorite Avenger, I’m sorry. There have been A LOT of members

Soundtrack to Your Geekout - Volume #1, Track #4

- Posted by Joshua Mocle on Friday, May 28, 2010

I’m not going to lie, dear readers…I really wanted to write about Dillinger Four today. It is SO nice up here in Boston and with sun comes copious amounts of pop punk and I have been listening to D4 almost nonstop for three days now. However, like I mentioned last week, pop punk is really hard to synch up to any scene in other form of media (comics, film, etc) that doesn’t explicitly involve A) high school, B) pizza parties or C) bubblegum. Much to my dismay (or maybe to everyone’s benefit), I read NO comics that featured any of these this week. Adding significantly do my dismay is the fact that the only tracks I could logically pair with Secret Avengers #1, easily my favorite book of the week, were metal tracks in the vein of Isis, who I already talked about last week and want to make a point of showcasing different styles of music in this column.

Then I read Blind Science while I just happened to be listening to Montreal’s Yesterday’s Ring and everything fell into place.

The results are curiously amazing, albeit mostly short. I assure you of this.

Eagle Awards Initiative Announced

- Posted by David Harper on Friday, May 28, 2010

The Eagle Awards are some of the most prominent awards in all of comics, only earning the highest tier of creators their prizes and doing a great job of spotlighting some books that deserve more recognition. In that vein, their announcement today that they've launched a new initiative to find new, original voices in comics is really not that surprising.

It seems they've launched the Eagle Awards Initiative, a campaign designed to get unpublished creators to submit original work to be judged and potentially published in an anthology collection that will be both printed and posted online. There will be cash prizes as well, but perhaps the most exciting aspect of this campaign is who the judges will be.

From Bleeding Cool, the judges include Peter Bagge, Karen Berger, Tom Breevort, Chris Claremont, David Finch, Dave Gibbons, Geoff Johns, Gilbert Shelton, Jeff Smith, Bryan Talbot, Ethan Van Sciver, Mark Waid and Brian Wood.

How crazy is that? That's a murderers row of editorial and creative talent, a collection of mega talents from all walks of comic book life. It's impressive to say the least, and to have your work analyzed by one of them is likely a prize in of itself for your average creator.

This initiative fully launches in July, and if you're interested in participating or learning more you can check out their website.

McAvoy to Play Charles Xavier in "X-Men: First Class"

- Posted by David Harper on Friday, May 28, 2010

With Fox fast tracking the return of the X-Men and director Matthew Vaughn signed on to direct the upcoming X-Men: First Class, it only made sense that significant casting news would be right around the corner. I mean, the movie is set to launch June 3rd, 2011, almost a year from today.

Thankfully, today they cast the lead in the movie as James McAvoy has been cast as Professor Charles Xavier in this film that will capture the inception of the war between Professor X and Magneto. They also cast it very well, as McAvoy is an exceptional actor (see: Atonement, his stage work) who also is well versed in big budget movies (see: Wanted). He's likely to be able to handle all aspects of the role, from the presumably physical (I can't imagine the movie won't take place pre-paralysis) to the pathos of it as well.

Now we just need to find out who gets cast as Erik Lensherr. Given the quality of this casting, I can't imagine it won't be someone high quality.

Friday Recommendation

- Posted by Walter Richardson on Friday, May 28, 2010

Comics aren't just for kids anymore. In fact, it's been quite some time since they have been. With heaps of violence and overblown sexuality appearing in a good chunk of the books on the market, comics have acquired an even worse label than childish: sophomoric. While I would certainly contest this point with works by Alan Moore, Grant Morrison and the like, this stereotype certainly isn't without some merit, and this negative view of comics hurts the industry in more way than one. For example, what parent is going to want their child reading comics when all they know of comics is the abundance of blood and the massive amounts of cleavage? What happened to the innocence? Think about it: some people may get into comics from the films or from a friend's insistence, but a large chunk of comic fans were reading comics when they were kids. The industry needs to start appealing to younger readers or else the comic-reading generations will just cycle out.

All of that being said, follow the jump to see what I find to be the perfect example of the all-ages comic. This is the Friday Recommendation, after all. Would it help if I said it won the Eisner Award for Best Serialized Story -- overall, not just for kids -- in 1995?

Review: George R Martin's Fevre Dream #1

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Thursday, May 27, 2010

Cover: Felipe Massafera
Writer: George R.R. Martin
Art: Rafa Lopez

Prepare for a ten issue vampire epic on the bayou from the writer of the A Song of Ice and Fire novels! From the New York Times Best-selling author, George R. R. Martin, comes a tale of vampire clans, death and debauchery, legendary bloodmasters, and even a few epic steamboat races on the muddy Mississippi. This is Martin's FEVRE DREAM, an antebellum story of power, loss, and the fever of bloodlust. It is 1857, and Abner Marsh is a remarkably ugly man -- but the best steamboat man on the river. When the pale Joshua approaches him with a partnership and enough money to build the boat of his dreams, it seems too good to be true. But Joshua is a mystery of a partner, a man who keeps strange hours and stranger friends. It's only a matter of time before Abner begins to wonder where the FEVRE DREAM is heading, and if it may turn out to be a nightmare, after all. Each issue of this stunning full-color epic is illustrated by Rafa Lopez, an artist whose skilled line captures every moonlit drop of blood in delicious detail. Adapted by the Hugo-nominated author Daniel Abraham, this version of FEVRE DREAM stays faithful to Martin's original dark vision, while bringing the torture and joy of his vampires to almost-human life.

This haunting series is available with Regular and Wraparound painted covers by Felipe Massafera and a very limited Nightmare retailer incentive.

Ellis and Wolfer, the writing team on Gravel, unveil the next six-issue barbaric epic of Wolfskin, this time joined by Gianluca Pagliarani, the star artist of Ignition City! His leather boots have carried him far, across an Earth both young and terrifying. But for the nomadic, berserker warrior named Wolfskin, past and future are about to collide in an unprecedented adventure of cataclysmic proportions. Having slaughtered his own tribesmen in the throes of an uncontrollable blood-rage, Wolfskin hopes to find a purpose in life by accepting a position as guide and hired swordsman on a rescue quest to the volcanic, High Northish ice plains. Review: Wolfskin

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Wednesday, May 26, 2010

Conan the Barbarian and the genre he inhabits has never really been my thing. Sure, I get a kick out of the Arnold Schwarzenegger movies, but I've never really found myself drawn towards the comics (despite the talent that works on those books). It seems to me to be a very specific genre that aims for a particular audience, so I never gave it a shot. Leave it to Warren Ellis to manage to draw me in and show me exactly what I'm missing.

Wolfskin collects three issues and one annual (written by Mike Wolfer with a story by Warren Ellis) starring the eponymous Wolfskin, a warrior from the North who has decided to walk South. Happening upon a small village, he gets mixed up in the battle of two warring parties and, unlike Yojimbo, decides to deal with them in a rather unorthodox way. Part Conan, part samurai, and part epic viking tale, Wolfskin manages to effectively tell a violent and sweet tale for just three issues, as well as an additional story in the annual.

So, seeing as I've never really ventured into the barbarian genre, what did my trip as planned by Warren Ellis have in store for me?

Follow behind the cut for more in depth thoughts on Wolfskin.

"The End" of LOST

- Posted by Crit on Tuesday, May 25, 2010

The island was not purgatory. It was not Hell. Whatever happened, happened. Oceanic 815 crashed on that island because Desmond failed to push the button. Eventually, some of them got off the island. They came back. Juliet set the bomb off, which sent them to island present. And finally, the Jack/Fake Locke showdown happened. Jack, the man of science turned man of faith, sacrificed himself to save the island (and the world if you believe mother when she said "if the light goes out here, it goes out everywhere") but for someone so obsessed with saving others, he had to let that obsession go before he could do the most important thing in his life. What an amazing character arc, from his eye opening to his eye closing. What an amazing show, from his eye opening to his eye closing.

Nothing is sacred as Crossed returns! The biggest hit horror series of the year returns with an all-new six-issue series written by David (Stray Bullets) Lapham! Set right at the start of the Crossed outbreak, this epic tale of depravity promises to shock and disturb you with even more intensity than the first series! The Pratt family lived a idyllic life on a horse ranch in North Carolina. A few generations of family working, living, and learning together. But not all things should be shared with, nor done to, other human beings. Much less your own family. Some men are just born evil, some men are turned Crossed. But which is worse? Imagine, for a moment, the worst crimes against humanity. Picture the cruelest affronts to decency. Conjure your darkest nightmares... and then realize it could all be so much worse. When civilization crumbles in one terrifying moment; when people are gleefully breaking into unthinkable acts of violence all around you; when everyone you love has died screaming in agony: What do you do? There is no help. There is no hope. There is no escape. There are only the Crossed.

Crossed: Family Values #1 is available with a Regular cover by Jacen Burrows, a Wraparound cover by series artist Javier Barreno, a Torture cover by Juan Jose Ryp, and a special rare Red Crossed retailer incentive.

Review: Crossed

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Tuesday, May 25, 2010

When I was a younger lad and first getting into "adult" comic books, I read a little book called Preacher by some duo I'd never heard of. After reading it, the name Garth Ennis is one that I consistently trust to deliver disturbing, cringer worthy, and often polarizing story telling. Heck, I've seen articles where people refuse to read things by him anymore because it just gets to be too much. Well, for those uneasy with Ennis steadfast mantra of delivering some of the creepiest and, pardon the language, but most frakked up books available on the market., then stay away from Crossed - this one's a doozy.

Crossed is a zombie story without actually be a zombie story. It fits in the same vein as a story like 28 Days Later or Dawn of the Dead, but only to the extent that there are deranged beings created by an unknown infection. Instead of being zombies though, these creatures are basically human. If you are infected by the Crossed plague, you basically resort to an insane primal being. Your instincts devolve, your need to shtup everything that moves in grotesque ways becomes the most prevalent, and you are not above extreme violence and cannibalism - even to those that have become like you. Where it came from? Nobody knows. But you don't want to be near anyone who has been infected, or it's already over.

The story follows 5 survivors of the initial outbreak as they try to adapt and survive in this new post-apocalyptic environment. Follow me beyond the cut to find out some of my thoughts Crossed, by Garth Ennis and Jacen Burrows. As a note, mild spoilers are discussed. Nothing that would ultimately ruin the overall story, but you should be warned regardless.

Free Iron Man: Extremis Motion Comic Download With Certain Marvel Titles

- Posted by Walter Richardson on Monday, May 24, 2010

As I was flipping through my new copy of Invincible Iron Man #26 this past week I was surprised to find an insert which allowed me to download the first episode of the new motion comic adaptation of Iron Man: Extremis for free on iTunes. At first I believed this to be an Invincible Iron Man exclusive, but Marvel has just announced that throughout the next couple of months you will be able to find similar download codes in the following comics (only for the first episode, unfortunately):
  • AVENGERS #2
  • AVENGERS ASSEMBLE HANDBOOK
  • AVENGERS PRIME #1
  • AVENGERS SPOTLIGHT
  • BLACK WIDOW #2
  • INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #26
  • IRON MAN NOIR #3
  • IRON MAN: LEGACY #3
  • NEW AVENGERS: LUKE CAGE #3
  • THOR #610
  • THUNDERBOLTS #144
  • ULTIMATE COMICS AVENGERS 2 #2
If you haven't read Warren Ellis' brilliant Extremis yet (shame on you) and are a fan of Marvel's new motion comics, then now is as good a time as any to start following this new adaptation. If you're already buying any of these titles, then there's no reason to at least check out the digital comic (and if you're buying more than one you can give the code to a non-comic reading friend who enjoyed the Iron Man films!).

What's Epic? He's Epic!

- Posted by Brandon Burpee on Monday, May 24, 2010

I got this in my email and it looked pretty cool so I wanted to share it with everyone. Below I've got the description of this new book and below that you can check out some great looking pages as well as some information on the title itself. The title is written by Tyler James, drawn by Matt Zolman and colored by Ty Tyner. So without further ado here's a little info.

After a freak experiment gives teenager Eric Ardor incredible abilities, he enthusiastically joins the ranks of the superpowered set as the masked crusader EPIC. He quickly learns he's one of the most powerful heroes around: super strength, speed, flight, invulnerability. You name it, he's got it. Unfortunately, he's also just discovered his only weakness...beautiful girls! Eric's powers are inexplicably linked to the attraction and arousal center of his brain. While other boys his age lose their cool around hot chicks, EPIC loses his powers! Living in Miami, home to the zaniest super-villians AND the most beautiful women in America, it’s gonna be a problem...

Review: The Red Eye Vol. 1 - Lost To The Future

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Monday, May 24, 2010

We live in a world where indie made comics is more prevalent than ever. What with the advent of the internet and online stores, it allows for us to get all sorts of different comics one might not easily ascertain. Such is the case of Zombie Ink Comics and their title, The Red Eye.

Written and illustrated by Kyle J. Kaczmarczyk, the book follows the adventures of the titular character, the Red Eye, who is a ghost agent for the United States during World War II. While kicking some Nazi ass, cryogenically frozen along with his greatest nemesis (almost like a reverse Demolition Man scenario). He wakes up in the year 2365, where the game has drastically changed and now, blind and relatively alone, he has to once again find his nemesis and save the world.

I am always up for a little Nazi ass-kicking, as well as sci-fi adventure, so obviously the initial pitch catches me. Follow me after the cut to find out how much I liked the book.

A Crisis of Chronology: The Super Buddies/JLI

- Posted by Walter Richardson on Sunday, May 23, 2010

So you picked up the first issue of Justice League: Generation Lost after Brandon Burpee gave it a most excellent review. Unfortunately, if you are new to DC Comics, you may be wondering "...this is the Justice League? Who are these guys, and why should I care?" The core of this new series is made up of the core team members of Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis and Kevin Maguire's Justice League International, otherwise affectionately dubbed as The Super Buddies. This is my favorite iteration of the Justice League, which means quite a lot from a Grant Morrison fanboy, so I urge you to follow the jump for a crash course in JLI history.

Doctor Who - "The Hungry Earth" Review

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Sunday, May 23, 2010

Alright, time for some new Who! I love Saturdays. If I'm not out having fun, I get to stay in and have just as good of a time, thanks to a dynamite cast and the on-going adventures of my favorite Time Lord. Of course, one thing noted is that this season can be a tad bit spotty with it's episodes. Some are great, and some are meh. So what about this week?

Well, this week we have an episode written by Chris Chibnall, who previously wrote in season 3 the episode "42." I've made no secret of my absolute adoration of season 3 of the relaunch of Doctor Who, so this already bodes well. Our happy crew of travelers mistakenly land in the wrong place, only to find themselves right next to a great big drilling operations as a crew of scientists attempt to explore the inner Earth. Unfortunately for them, there's something already down there. Something asleep, and something quite upset. And whatever's down there has it's own plans for this drilling operation.

Follow behind the cut for some thoughts on the latest episode of Doctor Who. As a note, some mild spoilers are discussed. Then again, the image at the top of the review is pretty much a spoiler in it's own right, so I've already been a jerk, now haven't I?

Soundtrack to Your Geekout - Volume #1, Track #3

- Posted by Joshua Mocle on Friday, May 21, 2010

So, in the ongoing development of this column, I began to ask myself “is there one defining characteristic of a piece of music that would help it specifically synch up with a comic book.” Despite my best efforts (AKA my delusions of grandeur), there really is no way I can admit that EVERY song is capable of working in this particular capacity. Some songs, for better or worse, lack an overall fullness to them and are more of a flash in the pan work, existing for however long its duration is and no longer. In short: for a SONG to become a SOUNDTRACK (for ANY other medium really) it requires DEPTH. For a song to be a soundtrack it can’t go in one ear and out the other…it needs to hit you square in the face. Now, I’m not insinuating that songs without this depth are bad or in any way unlistenable…I’m an unabashed pop-punk fan (the Dillinger Four kind, not so much the Sum 41 kind) and 98.7% of pretty much all pop-punk songs lack any depth whatsoever (this is, after all, the POINT of pop-punk), but unless the scene being tracked is a pizza party or a high school block party, the vast majority of the genre would not work. As much of a borderline bullsh*t characterization it is, a song really needs to be “driving” in order to properly augment an ongoing story…the song needs to actually take your mind on a journey rather than leave it standing still.

It was around this point in my thought process that I received the following text message…”aaaaand Isis breaks up. MTL show is gonna be their last.”

And just like that, one of the most powerful, relevant and creatively superior (minus that one record that sounded a little too much like Tool) metal bands in existence were calling it a day. Bummed I was.

Take A Look At Fringe's Alternate DC Covers

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Friday, May 21, 2010

So, as the story goes, Geoff Johns was appointed Chief Creative Officer, and with this title came all sorts of fun new responsibilities and tasks. One of them was to push DC characters into new mediums and get them more out in the world, even the more obscure characters. So he teamed up with Akiva Goldsman, writer/director/producer on the television show Fringe, and the two of them came up with a series of alternate world comic covers where something was a tad bit off.

And lo and behold, as promised, DC posted all the alternate reality covers. Created in collaboration with Hank Kanalz and a slew of talented artists, these hilarious covers are placed in the show for the hardcore DC fans that happen to be watching.

Click behind the cut for the remaining DC covers and, as Johns says on the DC site, feel free to harass Hank Kanalz if you'd like to see these comics actually made!
