Friday Saturday Recommendation: Mondo Urbano

- Posted by David Harper on Saturday, July 31, 2010

2010 has so far been a year filled with hotly anticipated titles, but for me, Oni's Mondo Urbano may have been the one that excited me the most. Created by one of my favorite artists in Rafael Albuquerque along with his collaborators and countrymen Mateus Santolouco and Eduardo Medeiros, this book fancied itself a "sex, drugs and rock'n'roll story." A vague conceit, but I was still intrigued by the building hype and the talent of the creators involved.

I finally picked it up the same week as I grabbed Oni's other hot title (a little book called Scott Pilgrim's Finest Hour), and I found myself compelled to read through it multiple times on my first sitting. It's a damn good book, but also one of surprising depth. Find out more after the jump.

Multiversity Casting Couch: S.W.O.R.D.

- Posted by Gilbert Short on Saturday, July 31, 2010

We all L.O.V.E.D. S.W.O.R.D. Why is “love” an acronym? For effect really; but the book was one of our favorites, and we all lamented its demise. It sort of had the same life as a show on FOX. Great concept, brilliant execution, and a rabid cult following. But that cult following didn’t blossom as well as it should have, and Marvel pulled the plug before it could really go anywhere.

But fear not! I too loved this book, and I decided I wanted to cast it. This one was kind of tough, because I did something I don't normally do and I cast voices for a lot of the characters, since I see them being CGI before I see them as a guy in a suit.

So who did I cast? You’ll have to look beyond the cut! Do you have any other suggestions? Don’t be afraid to offer them in the comments!

Fábio Moon vs. Craig Thompson in "Blog War"

- Posted by David Harper on Friday, July 30, 2010

It seems Fábio Moon is visiting Portland, Oregon (the rising Mecca of American comics), and while he and Craig Thompson (his host in Stumptown) are together they are tracking their activities with a "blog war."

"Blog War" may be a bit melodramatic for what this actually is, but as Craig Thompson notes on his site, it's more of a Blog Crossover. Considering how prodigious of talents Thompson and Fábio Moon are, this is the "Crisis of Infinite Earths" of blog x-overs. The two renowned creators are posting updates in the form of mini-comics (blending both creators works), so far detailing their attendance of a release party for Portland's own Menomena and a brilliant evening of comicking and conversation with the Allred's, a Dark Horse editor, and Joe Sacco.

Keep up to date with this ongoing blog-a-logue at Craig's and Fábio's sites, as anything new from these two phenoms should be welcomed with open arms by comic fans.

Preview Some Anamanaguchi From Scott Pilgrim vs the World

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Friday, July 30, 2010

By now you've probably heard me rant and rave about how awesome the chiptune band Anamanaguchi is. You've also probably seen me nerd out about their announcement in doing the Scott Pilgrim videogame soundtrack at Comic Con. If you didn't want to believe me about their awesomeness then, you can certainly start now!

Playstations blog has posted previews of four tracks from the upcoming soundtrack to the videogame. You don't get to hear the whole thing, but you will get a feel for how awesomely perfect the soundtrack will be to this game. The game serves as a recreation of classic 8-bit feel that we had with games like Super Mario and Sonic, and seeing as Scott Pilgrim paid tribute to those games throughout it's existence, a videogame in that style is perfect. Thank the videogame gods for Anamanaguchi then!

Scott Pilgrim vs the Universe (the game) comes out August 10th on the PS3 and will be out soon after on the XBOX 360 as well. Gamers, get your controllers ready.

Discussion Review: Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

- Posted by David Harper on Friday, July 30, 2010

Yesterday you saw my review of Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, and today we're bringing you Matt and I's takes. Given that Matt and I are very, very different when it comes to both comics and movies (for the most part), odds are this was going to provide highly disparate takes. Or would it?

Find out what we both thought after the jump.

Janet and Alex Evanovich's TROUBLEMAKER A Success At Comic-Con!

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Thursday, July 29, 2010

Last week, fourteen-time number-one best-selling author Janet Evanovich’s first-ever graphic novel, Troublemaker, saw a much-anticipated worldwide English-language release.

Troublemaker is available everywhere, from department stores to bookstores and comic shops across the U.S., making the title one of the most widely distributed the company has published without any Hollywood tie-ins.

Cowritten by daughter Alex Evanovich, Troublemaker is the continuation of the popular Barnaby series, which features the high-stakes misadventures of the main character, Alex Barnaby; NASCAR driver Sam Hooker; and, of course, Beans, the Saint Bernard. The third book in the series, this exciting new volume delivers more fast cars, fast-paced action, and steamy romance.
“I’ve loved comics all my life and it’s really exciting to be working with Dark Horse to produce my very own graphic novel,” said Janet Evanovich. “I’m also excited that I could do this with my daughter Alex (the family comicaholic).”

“This is a groundbreaking project in which Janet and Alex are telling the third chapter of an established prose series in graphic-novel format,” said Dark Horse president Mike Richardson. “We feel that this book will open up the characters to a brand-new audience, as well as expanding the authors’ fan base.”

Review: Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

- Posted by David Harper on Thursday, July 29, 2010

Sure, Edgar Wright's adaptation of Bryan Lee O'Malley's Scott Pilgrim series isn't coming until August 13th, but that doesn't mean we won't have features about the film itself ahead of time. While we're not part of the cool kids who saw it at SDCC, the sneak previews around the nation last night did give a few of us the chance to see the film. You'll see Matt and I talk about it more on Friday as well as Brandon and I discussing it on the next 4 Color News & Brews, but for now, you simply get my take.

So what did I think of the most anticipated comic film of 2010 (at least for me) - did Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World get a rating of awesome like it's titular hero? Find out after the jump.

Thor Trailer Leaked! Watch it before it gets taken down!

- Posted by Gilbert Short on Thursday, July 29, 2010

UPDATE: The first video we placed of the trailer went down. We've replaced it with another site's. Get your viewings in while you can, people - I doubt this will last too long.

UPDATE #2: Removed again. Our third attempt to keep it up is underway!

With little fanfare, the Thor trailer leaked online. While I think this was carefully orchestrated in order to build buzz for the movie, I would still say watch it before Marvel sends out their cease and desist order! Supposedly, the site that posted the video had it sent to them anonymously, but who can complain, right?

It really sets the tone of the movie, and who doesn't love Agent Caulson! If this doesn't get you amped for May 2011, then we're not entirely sure what will. But suffice it to say, this looks pretty wow-tastic. While watching the trailer, you really get the feeling that this is Thor. It's fantastical and it's got an epic feeling to it, and could easily surpass Iron Man at this point. While they obviously changed the Donald Blake element of the story, it does keep the same basic premise of Thor being cast out, and we really do learn a lot from the trailer. The descriptions people did online really didn't do this justice.

Here's to hoping we see the Cap footage soon as well! Let us know what you thought in the comments below.

WINCBD! - Matt's Stack (7-28-10)

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Thursday, July 29, 2010

After a week off for celebrating the fantastic day of my birth, I have returned to bring you your favorite set of reviews. After a week away, I felt the only thing appropriate was to focus on some smaller titles that I feel needed some love - or possibly some hate! But before we start to look at the titles that I picked during the draft, let's take a look at our scale:

0: Uwe Boll will direct the adaptation of this comic
0.1 - 1: Burn upon touching
1- 1.9: Abysmal
2.0 - 2.9: Art. Writing. Editing. All bad.
3.0 - 3.9: You'd be a masochist to pick this up.
4.0 - 4.9: "I'll give it another month...but that was not good."
5.0 - 5.9: "Really? The Watcher? In the face? I guess it was fun."
6.0 - 6.9: "Hmm. That was decent."
7.0 - 7.9: Well made but a few problems
8.0 - 8.9: Nearly flawless
9.0 - 9.9: Outstanding
10: Perfection. Issue of the year contender

This week my reviews include Action Comics #891, The Amory Wars: In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 #3, Pilot Season: Stellar #1 and Time Lincoln: Fists of Fuhrer #1 Quite a fun list this week.

Check out all the reviews after the jump.

- Posted by Gilbert Short on Thursday, July 29, 2010

Hello all! It's that time again. I'm back a different banner, one I like better. I'm also posting reviews with a decidedly DC theme, with three DCU proper titles (Green Lantern #56, The Flash #4, Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne #4) and a Vertigo title (American Vampire #5). Am I showing a bias? NAH! By now you should know how rating structure, but if you don't it's below!

0: Uwe Boll will direct the adaptation of this comic
0.1 - 1: Burn upon touching
1- 1.9: Abysmal
2.0 - 2.9: Art. Writing. Editing. All bad.
3.0 - 3.9: You'd be a masochist to pick this up.

7.0 - 7.9: Well made but a few problems
8.0 - 8.9: Nearly flawless
9.0 - 9.9: Outstanding
10: Perfection. Issue of the year contender

The Blue Beetle/Smallville Test Footage

- Posted by David Harper on Wednesday, July 28, 2010

The Blue Beetle test footage from San Diego Comic Con impressed a lot of people, and it is now on the Internet in all its glory. It was revealed that this test footage will tie into Blue Beetle's appearance on Smallville next year, but some have theorized that this type of footage isn't often developed unless they have some intent to develop his own show.

A Jamie Reyes/Blue Beetle TV show? Sign me up, please. Get John Rogers to script the pilot and I'm even more in.

Look for more on Blue Beetle's appearance on Smallville (along with Booster Gold!) soon.

Check Out the Teaser for the Thor Video Game!

- Posted by Walter Richardson on Wednesday, July 28, 2010

In more exciting alternative media news, Marvel has released a brief teaser trailer for the upcoming Thor video game. There is no gameplay footage in the trailer, but hey, that's what makes it a teaser, isn't it? As Matt Fraction is the story consultant, this will probably be a game to keep an eye on if you're a fan of a solid plot in your video games (though there's nothing to suggest that the gameplay won't be good). Expect the game to be released in Summer 2011 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PSP, Wii and Nintendo DS, and be sure to check Marvel's site for more information, including some concept art.

Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes Trailer Released

- Posted by Walter Richardson on Wednesday, July 28, 2010

Looks neat, doesn't it? Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes is the next animated show from Marvel, and the trailer features all of the original Avengers team as well Nick Fury, Loki, a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who I assume to be Maria Hill, and many more (as well as an... interesting theme song). Look for this show to debut on Disney XD in Fall 2010.

Comics Should Be Cheap! (Week of 7/28/10)

- Posted by David Harper on Wednesday, July 28, 2010

We're back with another week of Comics Should Be Cheap!, our weekly column in which each of our writers select the books they would read if they only had $20 to buy all of their comics. Given that each of us spend more than that because we're hooked on comics like Mel Gibson is hooked on crazy, this is a difficult exercise for us.

With that said, we take into consideration cost, value, how it reads without other books tying in, writing, art - everything. Everything that should factor into making a purchase on a budget. Feel free to share your picks in the comments, and let us know if you have any suggestions.

Batman: Under The Red Hood Review

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Tuesday, July 27, 2010

In the world of the animated, Marvel and DC have very different plans of attack. Marvel tends to shy away from adaptations and focus on original interpretations (although they do do them) whereas DC, for the most part, has been strictly adaptations, especially with their last couple of movies. To be honest, it’s probably the easier move to make because you already have your storyboards and plot laid out for you. It’s really just a matter of figuring out how to stretch the story out over time. Thus is the case with the adaptation of Judd Winnick’s Under the Hood, now entitled Under the Red Hood.

Featuring Winnick at the helm of the adaptation and impressive voice cast including John DiMaggio (famous for his role as Bender on Futurama) as well as Neil Patrick Harris, the movie seeks to adapt one of the more controversial stories from the DCU to film. Why so controversial? Because it featured the return of one of the classic “dead three” – Jason Todd.

Take a look behind the cut for my opinions of the film.

All-Star Superman DC's Next Animated Film For 2011

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Tuesday, July 27, 2010

Every post about this news should start like this: All-Star Superman is the greatest Superman story ever told. It is quite possibly one of the most touching and moving pieces that Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely will ever do together, even more so than WE3. I'm not going to lie - every time I go back to reread All-Star Superman, I tear up quite a bit. It's just that damn good of a story.

Now, Dwayne McDuffie has revealed that his next big project is an adaptation of said film for DC's Animated universe. You might recognize Dwayne McDuffie's name as the co-creator of shows like Ben 10 and popular characters like Static. This is incredibly exciting news for fans of the comic, because anyone that's read it has clearly been struck by it. The story features Superman in his last days when, after being tricked by Lex Luthor, it turns out that he's dying. The rest of the series plays out as a Last Will and Testament of sorts, as Superman faces different challenges per issue and defines his legacy before the final confrontation against his greatest enemy.

The film will come out in 2011, after Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, and I can only hope it is as brilliantly epic as the comic will. It will be a difficult adaptation to do, but it's clear McDuffie does respect the work (as can be seen in his brief description of it in the post above), so here's to hoping it turns out.

Here's also to hoping that the film adapts Quitely's style of art to the animation as we've seen DC's Animated department do with A New Frontier and Public Enemies (although they didn't do it for Crisis on 2 Earths, an adaptation of Morrison and Quitely's Earth-2).

Multiversity's Best and Worst of SDCC

- Posted by Walter Richardson on Tuesday, July 27, 2010

San-Diego Comic Con is the place to be for some of the biggest announcements regarding the comic industry, and even more not so big ones. We all have that project we want to hear more about, or the future of the characters we love, and with so many announcements you can bet that everyone has their own choice of what was the best announcement at the convention. Similarly, we each have some bits of news that we are wary about, to say the least. Follow the cut to see what some of Multiversity's writers considered the best and worst of this weekend's convention, and be sure to let us know in the comments section what you're most excited (or not excited) for.

"Joe the Barbarian" Film Adaptation On Its Way

- Posted by David Harper on Tuesday, July 27, 2010

In an exclusive dropped on Robot 6 by Grant Morrison himself, the legendary comics creator revealed that his 2010 creator owned project for Vertigo Comics Joe the Barbarian is being adapted into a film by Thunder Road Pictures.

In this day and age, it's not surprising that a comic property is snatched up to be developed into a film, but still this is very exciting news. This has been a standout series for me this year, and I can very easily imagine it being turned into a hugely entertaining and legendary kids movie ala a lot of the family films from the 80's that often verged on creepy to a degree.

My only concern? Translating series artist Sean Murphy's visuals to the screen. While film can often pull off imagery as well if not better than comics, Murphy's work this year has been the absolute best art in the business in my book. His ability to stage shots and express the story visually has made the series far better than it would have been in another artist's hands, and if the director of the film is smart he will use Murphy's visuals as a bible to crafting this film.

Exciting news, and congrats to R6 for pulling this exclusive.

Matt Fraction's The Batman Dreams Of Hieronymus Machines

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Monday, July 26, 2010

This past week in San Diego, Matt Fraction "performed" at w00tstock with a piece entitled "the Batman Dreams of Hieronymus Machines." It begins with Fraction talking about the first Marvel comic he ever wrote, Punisher: War Journal, in which he had the Punisher kill Stiltman with a bazooka to the taint. Where it goes from there... well, you just kind of need to watch it.

Thanks to Chad Collier for filming this absolutely insane performance in the first place.

Marvel vs DC - Who Had The Better Comic Con?

We reported some news over the past week, but obviously not all of it. Comic Con was HUGE! It always is! It is very easy to get lost in the amount of news that is released.

However, thanks to Newsarama we have a list of all the announcements by Marvel and DC. Both had some pretty big news to bring to comic book fans in attendance, but the real question is who do you think had the better con this year?

Check out the full list for each company after the cut, and let us know what you think! And don't forget to go to our source for this article.!

Now that Comic Con is over, we're going to be in a bit of slow news lull as all the fun stuff was announced there and the internet slowly catches up. However, right off the bat we're getting these stellar new Green Lantern - and they kick ass! Featuring Hal (Ryan Reynolds), Carrol (Blake Lively), Sinestro (Mark Strong), and evil mutated Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard), the posters connect to both create Green Lantern logos as well as show us the famous oath.

What's really fun is this is our first official look at Sinestro - which is pretty fantastic for being so small - as well as Hector Hammond, and on top of that Hector Hammond's logo is glowing yellow. Ooo! It has been confirmed that Parallax will feature in the film, so it'll be interesting to see how it factors into the film. For those that do not know Hammond's origin, it was retconned by Johns (who is a consultant on the film) that Hammond was radiated by the crashed spaceship of Abin Sur (versus the meteorite that caused the mutations in Gorilla City). Of course, recently in the comics Parallax has been connected to Hammond post-Blackest Night in an as of yet unrevealed way.

The Infinity Gauntlet in Thor?

- Posted by Gilbert Short on Sunday, July 25, 2010

In a somewhat unexpected move, there was another unveiling in that box that held the helmets used in the upcoming Thor movie. A couple pics follow below:

Both were originally posted on Twitter via Poni_Boy

That's right, it's the Infinity Gauntlet! While they probably won't have much if anything to do with the plot of the Thor movie, one can imagine the kind of excitement this might bring. Plus, could this be a precursor to the Avengers movie? Maybe it's just something for Comic-Con with no appearance in the movies. Whatever happens, I just think it's awesome to see!

SDCC: Ryan Reynolds Finally Recites Green Lantern Oath, Makes Little Boy's Day

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Sunday, July 25, 2010

At the Green Lantern movie panel yesterday, a young fan of the character asked Reynolds what it was like to recite the oath. In response, Reynolds - for the first time in public - recited the famous oath as the hall apparently grew dead silent. He then signed and gave the fan a poster for the film.

As Nathan Fillion said on twitter, this is why Ryan is a hero.

As additional notes, coverage of the panel revealed that Sinestro will not be the villain of the second film apparently (as covered by Oh No They Didn't), and it will instead be Blake Lively who suits up to kick his ass. Apparently they really want to milk the Sinestro relationship, which makes perfect sense if this is to be a trilogy. We'll also see Parallax in the film, as confirmed by Reynolds. Reynolds also confirmed that we haven't seen the final version of the costume yet - but don't expect white gloves.

SDCC: Descriptions Of THOR and CAPTAIN AMERICA Teases

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Sunday, July 25, 2010

Unfortunately, a lot of us weren't at Comic Con. It happens every year - comic companies bring their A-game to show off, and the rest of us are left wondering what was shown. Fortunately, over at Splash Page for MTV, we have detailed descriptions of both the footage for Thor and Captain America, which we will now share with you in lieu of leaked footage/camera phone crap:

THOR:

The footage opens with scenes of Thor wailing on various people while Gregg's Agent Coulson says, "You made my men look like a bunch of minimum wage mall cops."

"Who are you?" he asks. And the camera goes in close on Hemsworth's face.

We then get a look at Asgard as the camera flies overhead. We see Odin on the throne, as well as shots of the Warriors Three, Sif, Loki, Heimdall, and Frigga. Odin condemns Thor, who responds by telling him, "You are an old man and a fool!"

Odin casts him out, and the view suddenly flies through a galaxy of stars, finally landing on a shot of Hemsworth crumpled on the ground.

After Darcy and Jane Foster discover him, Thor opens his eyes and tells them, "Oh no, this is Earth, isn't it?"

We get a few shots of Thor acclimating to Earth and talking with Foster, telling her all her questions will be answered when he finds what he's looking for on Earth.

Cue: Thor ripping a sheet of plastic off a wall, revealing his hammer. When he tries to lift his hammer, he's unable to do so — and he falls to the ground, screaming.

We then see Odin dying — a single tear falls down his cheek — and Loki ascending to the throne.

Various battle scenes unfold as Thor and The Warriors Three battle some unknown foe. It all culminates with a shot of Thor throwing a goblet into the fire as everything fades to black. A few seconds later, Agent Coulson is back on the screen, approaching some unseen object in the desert. As the dust clears, it's revealed to be DESTROYER!

"Is it one of Stark's?" an agent asks Coulson.

"I don't know," he responds. "That guy never tells me anything."

Destroyer then open fires on the agents' vehicles with a massive blast of energy from his facemask, and the screen fades to the "Thor" title — with rain dripping on the letters as they fade toward the camera.

THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA:

-A voiceover repeated the famous Pearl Harbor declaration of December 7, 1941, as a "day that will live forever in infamy."

- Over clips of WWII headlines and footage, the text narration revealed that "one story has never been told," and the camera pans out to show Captain America's shield.

- "Every army starts with one man," it continues, and we're given a full-body silhouette of Captain America. The camera then offers up a close-up profile shot of Chris Evans as Cap, as he turns to face the camera.

- The "Captain America" title flashes, and then... a quick shot of Cap slinging the shield!

A castle wall is blown inward, killing one of the two men inside. As the dust settles, we see a group of Nazis emerge, with orders to open up a tomb in the center of the room. As they struggle to open it, everyone turns to face a recent arrival — a pre-scarring Red Skull.

"It's taken me a long time to find this place," he tells the caretaker.

"What you seek is just a legend," the caretaker responds.

"Why make such an effort to conceal it," responds Weaving's character.

The soldiers remove the lid form the tomb, revealing an ancient skeleton holding a sword and a transparent cube (the Cosmic Cube?). Red Skull holds up the cube, calling it a Tesseract — the gem of Odin's treasures — and drops it, breaking it.

Red Skull then locates a secret panel on the wall and removes a small box coiled with golden serpents. He opens it, and is engulfed in a blue glow.

"Ordinary men were not meant to look upon it," says the caretaker.

"Exactly," says Red Skull.

Sounds quite exciting! Apparently those there thought that the footage looked fantastic, so needless to say that May and July of 2011 can't come soon enough! For more info about what happened at the Marvel Studios panel last night, check out Splash Page for full coverage.

We've been wondering what is coming from Marvel's new TV division now that Jeph Loeb is in charge, and it appears that the first announcement is here: in addition to the already announced Avengers cartoon, there will be four brand new animated television shows to air on G4 next year - all of which Warren Ellis has worked on.

The series will be Wolverine, X-Men, Iron Man, and Blade! Each will be 12 episodes for their first seasons and have been developed by Madhouse under Ellis' guidance, and will air exclusively on G4. You can check out a teaser for the anime Iron Man above.

- Posted by Walter Richardson on Saturday, July 24, 2010

As much as some might consider him to be an unpleasant character, there's a reason why John Byrne is a legend. IDW Publishing realized this when they acquired the rights to collect and reprint his series Next Men, and now they have announced that they will be printing the first new Next Men comics in approximately fifteen years, beginning in December 2010. SDCC: Some Gems From DC's Event Horizon

- Posted by Walter Richardson on Saturday, July 24, 2010

DC Comics' Event Horizon mostly consisted of old news, but there were three particular interesting announcements from the panel moderated by editor Ian Sattler:
  • Following Alan Moore's earlier declaration that he did not want the rights to Watchmen back, Ian Sattler's response to whether or not there would be more Rorschach was just "no comment." Make of that what you will.
  • Nick Spencer and R.B. Silva will be working on a Jimmy Olsen co-feature in the pages of Action Comics. Expect to see the first in-comic appearance of Chloe Sullivan from television's Smallville to appear within said co-feature.
  • Aaron Lopresti will be writing a title in 2011 entitled Weird Worlds featuring monster heroes like... Garbage Man? Whether or not this will include previous Vertigo-only characters such as Swamp Thing is up to speculation.

SDCC: "Scott Pilgrim" Action Figure on the Horizon

- Posted by David Harper on Saturday, July 24, 2010

Personally, I'm not a collector of memorabilia involving comics outside of the actual comics themselves. With that said, Mezco revealed at San Diego Comic Con that not only will they be releasing the previously announced Scott Pilgrim plushes, but they will also be releasing at least a 6" Scott Pilgrim action figure. Not only that, but it's the Bryan Lee O'Malley design, not some sort of Michael Cera recreation that would somehow find a way to outawkward Michael Cera (which is saying something). Perhaps I'll have to make an exception for this action figure.

This is a big week for O'Malley's Scott Pilgrim, as the series finale hit this week to rave reviews and big sales, the movie premiered at SDCC in epic fashion (with a performance by Metric!), and an altogether dominant performance at Comic Con. This action figure is just icing on a very delicious cake.

SDCC: "DC Universe Online" Trailer Revealed, Blows Minds

- Posted by David Harper on Saturday, July 24, 2010

On a scale of 1-10, the new trailer for the upcoming video game "DC Universe Online" is somewhere around a 476 in awesome. The new footage revealed by GameTrailers.com today is so absurdly great that mere words barely handle it.

It depicts an epic battle between Earth's heroes (namely Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, The Flash, Green Lantern, and Cyborg of all people) versus Earth's villains (Lex Luthor, The Joker, Black Adam, Circe, Deathstroke, and a quick appearance from Harley Quinn), which culminates in the death of the trinity and the big reveal of Brainiac's armada. It is badassness purified in video form, quickly establishing to me that the fact I don't play video games at all will not be a deterrent on the fact that I must play this game.

Hell, I would watch a movie made by this team, and kind of wonder why they don't just do that.

DC Universe Online comes out in November on PS3 and PC. Don't miss it.

SDCC: Can I Interest Anyone in footage for "The Goon?"

- Posted by David Harper on Saturday, July 24, 2010

More and more footage is coming out of San Diego Comic Con about the upcoming feature length film of The Goon. This movie, which finds Clancy Brown voicing The Goon and Paul Giamatti voicing Frankie, is written by series creator/writer/artist Eric Powell and is produced by David Fincher (Fight Club).

The footage, revealed today by MTV Splash Page, depicts Frankie going on a bender thanks to some money found a slackjaw and then The Goon showing up post beating for a HUGE beer at Norton's. Oh yeah, and the footage ends with the deadly duo making it rain death and destruction upon some slackjaws thanks to some fists of fury and Frankie's Tommy Gun. No big deal.

This animated adaptation looks like it will be a blast and a half, and we'd expect nothing less from anything coming from Eric Powell. More details on the director (rumored to be Fincher himself) and release date as we get them.

"Flash: Speed Force" Coming

- Posted by David Harper on Saturday, July 24, 2010

As revealed by Geoff Johns yesterday during the DC Nation Special Edition panel, there will be a second ongoing Flash titled coming up that will be presumably written by Johns himself. This title, much to glee of yours truly, will focus on the seemingly forgotten other speedsters such as Wally West, Bart Allen, Jesse Quick, and even XS (Legionnaire as well as Bart's cousin and Barry's granddaughter).

No timeframe was given on this release, but I can say that I'm more excited to read this book than I am the current incarnation of The Flash even with no details being revealed. I love me some Wally and Bart.

Look for more coming soon about this series, as it will likely develop a lot of support from DC and Johns going forward.

SDCC: Matz, Jacamon's "Cyclops" Heads to America

- Posted by David Harper on Saturday, July 24, 2010

Matz and Luc Jacamon are two of the most renowned creators in the world today thanks to their work on books like The Killer, as their titles that earned them praise in France and beyond have started making their way to America thanks to Archaia Comics. Now, their acclaimed graphic novel Cyclops will be released as a mini-series in America in the spring of 2011 by Archaia, as announced at San Diego Comic Con.

This title will follow a character named Douglas Pistoia fifty years in the future, as he finds himself a soldier in a privatized war that doubles as reality television thanks to cameras fitted to each soldier. Pistoia finds himself successful at this, but this success is a double edged sword that leads him to begin questioning his humanity. Thematically, Matz looks at both "the privatization of war and the evolution of the entertainment industry as reality TV continues to progress into stranger and more unusual territory" as noted by CBR, as well as the more personalized, human costs associated with war.

This book drew rave reviews on initial release in 2006 and was optioned in 2008 to be turned into a film with James Mangold attached to direct. Don't miss this release, as it will assuredly be a stunner (and don't forget to catch CBR's interview with Matz about it as well).

SDCC: Red Hulk ("Rulk") to Join Avengers With "Avengers #7"

- Posted by David Harper on Saturday, July 24, 2010

In a move that drew gasps and many mean spirited comments from comic fans around the globe, Brian Michael Bendis announced in Marvel's The Heroic Age: Avengers panel that the much lamented Red Hulk (Jeph Loeb's worst creation ever) will be joining the Avengers with November's Avengers #7.

Seriously.

The character who was revealed to be "Thunderbolt" Ross (Bruce Banner's nemesis and once father-in-law) is "the character most need of redemption. We will see where he fits in the Marvel Universe after all that he has done" according to Bendis (via Newsarama), and could be given new life (first life?) in Bendis' capable hands.

As it stands right now, I'm highly on the skeptical side, but I'll keep reading and hoping that Bendis can somehow make it work. If not...well, that gives me a good reason to drop the book.

SDCC: DC Characters Leaving Vertigo Confirmed

- Posted by David Harper on Saturday, July 24, 2010

From Bleeding Cool's Rich Johnston (who must be on his 450th cup of coffee or be near death at this point), Vertigo's Executive Editor Karen Berger confirmed that DC characters presently based in Vertigo will start reverting back to their original home. This all went down at yesterday's Vertigo panel at San Diego Comic Con, and is unsurprising given the buzz but was still poorly received amongst fans (especially in BC's forums).

What does this mean exactly? Well, first to be integrated will be either Swamp Thing (who will be receiving a new ongoing set in the DCU) or Death, who will be appearing in Paul Cornell's run on Action Comics very soon. Madame Xanadu's recent cancellation likely indicates that she will make a faster than expected return to DC proper, but the big question on everyone's mind is this: what about John Constantine? Where does he end up - still very much a Vertigo character (as he should be), or as a cape wearing member of the JSA, as a particularly animated commentator in BC's forums suggested may happen? That will be the hot button question in this transition, and to me, if DC/Vertigo was smart, they'd leave well enough alone with everyone's favorite hard drinking/smoking occult detective.

To me, this isn't that big of a deal. Sure some character's will be integrated back in (might want to stick away from messing with Gaiman's lot too much though), but the backbone of Vertigo is based on creator owned work like Fables, The Unwritten, and Scalped. Even their current top seller, Joe the Barbarian, is a creator owned work from one of their biggest superhero names in Grant Morrison. I don't see this being the death knell of this proud name as much as a refocusing. Time will tell on that though.

The Return of CrossGen?

- Posted by David Harper on Saturday, July 24, 2010

From 1998 to 2004, a small comics publisher known as CrossGen quickly became a force to be reckoned with. Combining the bankroll of investor/comic fan Mark Alessi with the talents of people like Editor-In-Chief Mark Waid, writers Ron Marz and Barbara Kesel, and budding artists like Steve McNiven, this publisher developed a passionate fanbase very quickly.

And then it died.

It turns out if you aren't good at managing your business, the quality of your comics don't matter. CrossGen went into limbo until Disney purchased them strictly to develop CrossGen's "Abadazad" as a novel series.

The same Disney who now owns Marvel.

So when Marvel's Cup of Joe panel ended today with a single slide showing CrossGen's logo (as noted by Bleeding Cool). Intriguing...

Expect the return of old favorites going forward, like "Scion" and "Sigil." More on this as we get it.
