DC To Officially Renumber All Titles, Introduce A Few New Ones

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Tuesday, May 31, 2011

Over at DCU's the Source blog and USA Today, it has been 100% announced and confirmed the rumor everyone has been talking about: post-Flashpoint, DC is totally relaunching itself.

You can continue to read all kinds of rumors all over the internet about things that have not been confirmed, but here is what we do know straight from the beast itself: in the last week of August, only two DC titles will come out - Flashpoint #5 by Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert, and Justice League (sans "Of America") #1 by the long-rumored creative team of Geoff Johns and Jim Lee, i.e. two of the three big honchos over at DC Comics. It can be assumed that this has been in the works for a while, given how long the rumor has existed, and it can also be assumed that this has ties to Geoff Johns and Jim Lee's mysterious plans for Superman, who noticeably has a different costume/hairstyle/face in the small promo image that we have (and as soon as we get a better one, we'll update). The Justice League will feature Batman (who is not featured in the above picture, so it could be Dick or Bruce), Superman, Green Lantern (as Hal, which kills some of our WOTGL theories), The Flash (noticeably not pictured in the above image, assumedly as a Flashpoint spoiler), Wonder Woman (somewhat featuring her redesign) and Aquaman, but not Martian Manhunter for some reason, and is the first of 52 planned #1 issues for September. Yes, you read that right.

The idea here is to make comic books more accessible for new readers, although I'm sure a few older fans (myself probably included) will have something to complain about somewhere. Either way, no matter if you think this as a positive or negative, it is an incredibly ambitious and risky undertaking for the company to try out. There will also be day and date digital comics for all of their new #1 books and everything else going forward.

There are more announcements on the way, a few of which may or may not be spoiled by Bleeding Cool (such as a Deadman starring Adventure Comics, something called "Dark", and something called "Edge"), who are running a marathon of post-Flashpoint rumors/news.

MGA Study Hall: Issue #2

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Tuesday, May 31, 2011

You guys demanded it. Nick and Joe encouraged us to do it. Now we've done it: my partner in crime Crit Obara and I have sat down and studied the first six issues of Morning Glories! Today we've got the second issue, and we'll have a new version of this column up daily this week, with our studies of #6 and #10 up next week! Get excited.

As a note, these columns contain massive spoilers. The issue has been out for quite some time now, but as a note if you have not read the issue yet you will have the ending ruined for you, as well as other key elements of the book. While a lot of what we say is just theorizing and speculation, some of it is a reflection of the latest issues as well up to the 9th issue. So. Read the issues. Then read our thoughts. Agreed? Good.

As always, our very lovely/supremely awesome column header was designed by the graphic designer for the actual book, Tim Daniel! For more of Tim's work, please visit his site Hidden Robot. Many thanks to Tim for being fantastically awesome and providing it to us.

Off The Cape - Any Empire

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Tuesday, May 31, 2011

I'm sure that anyone who is a frequentor of this column probably knows who Nate Powell is. Why wouldn't you? He won an Eisner Award for his last book on Top Shelf, Swallow Me Whole, and he even had a guest appearance in the comic book Sweet Tooth. I don't think you need much better indie cred/press than that! So if you're here now, I'm going to venture a guess that I don't need to verbally illustrate who Nate Powell is.

However, I'm going to venture a guess that you have not read Any Empire - at least, not yet. It's currently set for an August release (and you can pre-order it from Amazon.com right now), and considering it is the tail end of May, that means we're in the pre-release buzz time - and that's exactly what I'm here to do.

Take a look after the cut for some thoughts on Powell's follow-up to Swallow Me Whole.

Geoff Johns' Run On Flash Ends With Flashpoint

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Tuesday, May 31, 2011

Geoff Johns is one of those guys who started so brilliantly unassuming and has become an absolute colossal entity at his company. Say what you will about his work - love it or hate it - the man is important to DC. While he is certainly most known for his work on Green Lantern, there is one character that Johns also helped give a rather defining run to - and that is the Flash.

Johns has worked on the Flash since 2000, with a five year run that saw the creation of new villains and the fleshing out of the brotherhood that is the Rogues. With an extended run with Wally, Johns returned to the Rogues during Final Crisis and has since been in charge of Barry Allen's return to the modern DCU. Now, DC's The Source has announced that Geoff Johns will no longer be working with the Flash any longer post-Flashpoint. Whether you have loved or hated his run with the character, it's impossible to deny the rather huge effect he has had on the Flash family, shaping the current incarnation into what it is before someone else takes over.

So while Johns moves on to Aquaman come September (and who knows what else?), the question remains: who is going to take over the Flash? We now have 3 characters with the title, plus a Kid Flash, a new Impulse, and Jesse Quick. Even Max Mercury is running around somewhere. DC wouldn't go to all the trouble of bringing the Flash back just to have Kid Flash be the only character anyone uses, right?

I for one nominate and cross my fingers that, post-Flashpoint, Sterling Gates will write the ongoing adventures of the Flash. He's writing the Kid Flash tie-in, and he's definitely my favorite most-underused writer DC has.

Who do you guys want to see take over the Flash?

Check Out The Doctor Who Mid-Season Finale Prologue

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Monday, May 30, 2011

Now that you've all ready my review of the latest episode of Doctor Who (you did read it, right?), let's talk about what's to come. Instead of putting a tease for the next episode, they instructed you to go online. Unfortunately, unless you live in the UK, you couldn't watch the prologue for the next episode. Or, that is what I would be saying if this wasn't the age of the internet where everything can be accessed from anywhere.

So, as it were, take a view of the prologue above. If this doesn't get your interest titillated, I'm not quite sure what will!

If you want to see more of what's to come, check out this trailer for next week's episode. I suppose it has "spoilers", but no more so than usual. Either way, I'll refrain from mentioning what moment caused me to do a nice personal fist bump. Should be a pretty big episode, all things considered.

Doctor Who - "The Almost People" Review

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Monday, May 30, 2011

Welcome back to more Who review. Last week I noted that the episode we were given was really quite good, but it would take the final part of it to really decide if the story was good or not. Well, that second part is here - and boy, is it a bit of a doozy, eh?

Hop behind the cut for some thoughts on the episode. As a note, spoilers are indeed discussed, so you might want to watch the episode first.

Isaiah Mustafa Stars In Fake Luke Cage Movie Trailer

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Monday, May 30, 2011

Does anyone remember a while ago when we reported this? About how Isaiah Mustafa met with Marvel about actually playing Luke Cake in a live action feature film?

Well, while I can't tell you that that is going to hapen, I can tell you this: a short fake teaser trailer was made, and it stars Isaiah Mustafa playing Luke Cage from creation to bad-ass rooftop posing.

Take it for what you will, and enjoy the video above.

What Is Cameron Stewart Working On?

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Monday, May 30, 2011

Recently on his tumblr-turned-website, Cameron Stewart posted the above image of Catwoman with the added note of "Detail of unannounced current work (it’s not what you think so don’t get too excited)." This followed an unfinished breakdown of a full page that included a rough version of the image, which was originally shown on Stewart's Instagram account. Since then, we've seen several images of Catwoman and Batman in what seems to be some kind of - dare I say - Catwoman and Batman comic book. So the question is, what is Stewart working on?

We can tell you he has Batman Inc #8, but this is something "unannounced." It's also not what we think - so it's not a Catwoman title, I guess? Or does he mean that it's not another issue of Batman Inc? Because those would be my two guesses.

Either way, this probably has something to do with the rumored "DC relaunch" post-Flashpoint. Stay tuned for more info as we get it.

The Weekend Week In Review (5/28/2011)

- Posted by Walter Richardson on Saturday, May 28, 2011

Want to keep up with the ever-advancing continuity porn of the DC and Marvel universes, but simply don't have the time or money to buy every ongoing? We're here to help. Our newest column, the Weekend Week In Review, gives you ((usually) very) brief synopses of what happened in a select few of DC and Marvel's titles — with a helping of sarcastic commentary — so that when some nasty old writer wants to punish you by heavily referencing a title you didn't pick up, you won't be left in the dark. Of course, that means that spoilers are in abundance after the cut, but I figure that you could figure that out.

Friday Recommendation - The End League

- Posted by Joshua Mocle on Friday, May 27, 2011

A little while back I went on a huge Rick Remender comics binge wherein I ate up several of his more prominent independent works. One such work was a little book called The End League. Featuring wildly different work from Mat Broome and Eric Canete over the course of it's two volumes, the book tackled the very real idea of "what happens when the super heroes the world comes to love and adore have to literally face the end of the world." Using characters stunningly similar to some mainstream comic mainstays, Remender crafts a story of humanity on its last legs with its heroes trying valiantly to win a day they have already lost, and results are shocking, thoughtful, depressing and uplifting all at the same time.

Review: Daken #9.1

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Friday, May 27, 2011

Written by Rob Williams
Illustrated by Ron Garney

Special POINT ONE issue. START READING with this Point One issue! In his bid for power, Wolverine's son Daken has already singlehandedly taken over the underground criminal element of Madripoor, but he's just getting started. Next on his list is the city of angels. That's right, Daken's headed to Hollywood but first he's got a stop to make and score to settle. Enter Wolverine! Guest starring the Avengers!
I have only been tangentially following the adventures of Daken post-Dark Wolverine/Wolverine: Origins, so I know what's going on but haven't been actively invested in it. However, Rob Williams - from the few things I've read from him - is turning out to be a hidden gem at Marvel. While I haven't enjoyed Way's work with Daken through Dark Wolverine and the first 9 issues of Daken, there's no reason not to give Marvel up and comer Rob Williams a shot, right? Especially with the Point One initiative catering to the "new reader" aspect.

Let's find out if the gambit was worth it after the cut.

Review: American Vampire #15

- Posted by Walter Richardson on Friday, May 27, 2011

Written by Scott Snyder
Illustrated by Rafael Albuquerque

Ghost War" continues as Henry and his lost unit fight for their lives against a vicious new strain of vampire. Meanwhile, Skinner makes some unexpected moves and Pearl sets out on a perilous journey. The secret vampire war of The Pacific rages on!
I'll repeat what I said in this week's Comics Should Be Cheap: "Nazis and vampires. What more needs to be said?" Obviously I was being a bit facetious. While this story is set during World War II, it's centered on the Pacific front rather than the European (though the upcoming Survival of the Fittest mini will be located on the other side of the globe). Still, World War II and vampires. What more needs to be said? Follow the cut and see… uh… what needs to be said.

Review: Magnus: Robot Fighter #4

- Posted by Patrick Tobin on Thursday, May 26, 2011

Written by Jim Shooter
Penciled by Stephen Thompson

If you hunt and kill a man, it's murder, but what if it's a robot with advanced artificial intelligence? To Magnus, that's murder, too. The Metal Mob's Capo Andronicus runs a "safari" racket patronized by the idle rich, who pay to track sentient Q-ROBs deep in the lawless Goph Lands. Tonight's prey: Q-ROB Steelhammer. Even though Steelhammer is a blood-soaked human killer, Magnus cannot allow him to be hunted like an animal. Interfering with the hunt makes Magnus prey as well...dangerous game, indeed. Magnus confronts the Boss of all Bosses, Timur, in a battle for the ages!

Karate-chopping robots in the year 4000 A.D. is apparently good for exactly four issues in the current market. This is all we get for now -- so is what we got any good? More after the jump.

Review: Secret Avengers #13

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Thursday, May 26, 2011

Written by Nick Spencer
Illustrated by Scott Eaton

Armies are mounting against the Avengers on every side, and even the Gods have turned their backs on Earth. With humanity facing it's gravest threat yet, Steve Rogers and his Secret Avengers will make some hard choices about what's just in times of war. And even as they do, a new danger of a different kind emerges-- one that confronts them not in the name of evil or fear, but freedom and liberty.
I have been rather unabashed in my high opinion of the Secret Avengers title. While there are certainly many Avengers books on the market right now, I've found Brubaker's work on this title - paying off elements of his work on The Marvel's Project - to be quite entertaining. If nothing else, Brubaker's long form conspiracy plot in Captain America have proved that this is a man that can quietly tell an extremely powerful story.

...But now he's done.

The future of the Secret Avengers is a tad uncertain. Brubaker has left the Shadow Council storyline completely open for the following writers to do with what they will. And while Warren Ellis is the next ongoing writer of the title, in the mean time we get three (four, if you include the Point One) Fear Itself tie-in issues from Multiversity favorite Nick Spencer! With his goal being to reflect the carnage of the event while also telling character based stories, the question is: did Spencer succeed?

Take a look after the cut to see some thoughts on the issue.

Review: The War Of The Green Lanterns - Parts 7, 8, and 9

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Thursday, May 26, 2011

Written by Geoff Johns, Tony Bedard, and Peter Tomasi
Illustrated by Doug Mahnke, Tyler Kirkham, and Fernando Pasarin

Green Lantern #66
The blockbuster "War of the Green Lanterns" takes it toll! Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, John Stewart and Kyle Rayner fight on against their fellow Lanterns – and the carnage escalates to savage heights. And how will the other New Guardians capitalize on it?

Green Lantern Corps #60
John Stewart and Kyle Rayner figure out their roles in the coming end the "War of the Green Lanterns" – but what that means will rock the Corps to its core!

Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors #10
"War of the Green Lanterns" continues! Guy Gardner has seen the deadly prophecy of Krona – but what can he possibly do to stop it?
It's a triple threat with the Green Lantern titles this week, as we get the penultimate episodes of the War of the Green Lanterns. And of course, I read all three issues one after the other in a single sitting so that I can review the latest parts of the War. Given the impossible standards set by the Sinestro Corps War, as we reach the "events" breaking point, how do the recent twists and turns play-out in this short crossover? Is this multi-colored battle worth the purchase, or are the days of the Corps' supremacy in the DC line-up gone?

Check out some thoughts after the cut. As a note, spoilers are discussed, so you are encouraged to read the issue first.

Review: DuckTales #1

- Posted by Walter Richardson on Thursday, May 26, 2011

Written by Warren Spector
Illustrated by Leonel Castellani

DUCKTALES is back! The hit Disney Afternoon TV show makes a splash this month as an all new, original ongoing comic book series! Written by the creator of the EPIC MICKEY video game and illustrated by MARVEL SUPER HERO SQUAD’s Leonel Castellani, this is the latest and greatest revival of the Disney Afternoon Revolution that “might solve a mystery,” but will definitely “rewrite history!” Existing within the same continuity as kaboom!’s hit series DARKWING DUCK, find out why “life is like a hurricane!”
If you've been coming here for a while, then you probably know that I have a soft spot in my heart for all-ages comics. You might also know that I love Disney's Duck family. A lot. As such, I figured I would give Boom's relaunch of DuckTales a shot. Is it pleasing to my nostalgia-tainted senses, or does it fail to measure up to my sillily high standards? Follow the cut to see.

Review: Strange Adventures #1

Written and Illustrated by Various

Don't miss this eighty page collection of science fiction short stories from some of Vertigo's all-time greats, as well as the hot new talents of tomorrow! Plus: the Eisner Award-winning 100 BULLETS team of Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso reunite to bring you the first chapter of their upcoming new series SPACEMAN!
Somehow I didn't notice that this was coming out this week. If I had, my Comics Should Be Cheap list would have been a lot more difficult to make this week. I'm a fan of Vertigo in general, I think that anthologies are a great idea, and I love speculative fiction. Of course I was going to pick this one up. Fund It!: Comics Get Animated

- Posted by Walter Richardson on Wednesday, May 25, 2011

Comics and animation have always been closely related, whether you're talking in terms of Scott McCloud's observation that film is technically sequential art (read your Understanding Comics, everyone), or the more superficial level of there having been multiple animated superhero-based television shows over the years. Nowadays, Marvel and DC are both churning out feature-length animated films, whether by coming up with original material (Marvel's Wolverine Versus double feature) or adapting existing stories (DC's upcoming Batman: Year One — which I am beyond stoked for). Follow the cut for other shorelines and/or franchises that I would love to see adapted for the drawn screen, and be sure to leave your own ideas in the comments!

Read All Nighter #1 By David Hahn For Free

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Wednesday, May 25, 2011

Any fan of comics should know the name of Periscope Studios by now. A collection of absolute talent in the industry, Periscope is home to several Multiversity favorites including (but not limited to) Jeff Parker, Paul Tobin, Steve Lieber, Natalie Nourigat, Dustin Weaver, and one David Hahn. You might remember Hahn from a few issues of one of my favorite comics of all time, Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane, as well as in books you've probably actually read like Fables. You might even recognize him as the line-work artist from the Suicide Girls comic (which Cameron Stewart is inking).

Now you have another reason to recognize him. Hahn has written and drawn his own serialized graphic novel for Image comics, entitled All Nighter. The book stars young Kit Bradley, a 20-year old art student who is into punk rock and petty theft who is ready to turn her life around, dump her loser boyfriend, and maybe get a real cell phone. But of course, life is never quite that easy, is it? Oh, and did I mention she killed her mother?

In anticipation of the comics release next month, Hahn has uploaded the entire thing for free onto his website in PDF format. The issue is a very easy and entertaining read, at times reminiscent of books like Wood and Kelly's New York Four. Hahn has a very clear cut style that draws the reader into the very realistic world of drama present in All Nighter. It's quite impossible to not see yourself in the book at points, with reflections of a younger and more wild-sided age where you only thought you knew everything and very quickly learned you know nothing. So suffice it to say, All Nighter #1 is definitely worth the read.

So what are you waiting for? Right click/save as and get your read on! Then be sure to pick it up in stores next month, June 22nd.

Off the Cape: Infinite Kung Fu

- Posted by David Harper on Tuesday, May 24, 2011

Written and Illustrated by Kagan McLeod

Infinite Kung Fu walks you through familiar corridors in the house of martial mayhem, but still smashes your face through walls of wonder and into rooms where kung fu is afraid to go.

Catastrophe has knocked most of the world back to the middle ages — and to make matters worse, the dead are rising from the grave as zombies (reincarnation gone wrong)! In this world, where the way of the fist is a way of life, ex-soldier Lei Kung must infiltrate the evil emperor’s five kung fu armies and stop him from destroying all life on the planet. Allegiances are blurred as techniques are perfected, and Lei Kung becomes less certain who’s friend and who’s foe in each chapter!

Fists fly, limbs are lost and blood vessels burst in this tale of furious rivals, supernatural masters, walking corpses, and above all, raging kung fu! -- a 464-page deluxe flexi-cover graphic novel, 6.75" x 9.5"
Top Shelf is not a company that is unused to releasing quality books, but in the coming months they have a list of high profile releases that would be the envy of any publisher. In the coming weeks within Off the Cape, Matt and I will be looking at the five of them: Jess Fink's Chester 5000, Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: 1969, Nate Powell's Any Empire, Ludovic Debeurme's Lucille, and, to start, Kagan McLeod's Kung Fu epic Infinite Kung Fu.

Check out my thoughts on Infinite Kung Fu after the jump, and if you want to sample it yourself you can go here for the first half of the book.

The Wonder Woman Costume That Won't Be

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Monday, May 23, 2011

Everyone complained about the live action Wonder Woman's costume when it was first revealed, and after being quickly redone by the producers and network, people still contained. Everyone just wanted that classic Diana costume.

Well, here you go: Adrianne Palicki in the classic Wonder Woman costume,

Enjoy it for what it is. NBC passed on the Wonder Woman costume, so this is about the most you're ever going to see of the costume, unless another network shows interest.

Torchwood: Miracle Day Gets A Trailer

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Monday, May 23, 2011

If we're going to talk about Doctor Who, we should talk a bit about Torchwood as well, right?

Set to premiere July 8th, the British covert ops team is coming to America, just as the Doctor did! Apparently some kind of "miracle" happens in which nobody dies, and it's up to the remnants of the Torchwood team to figure out what is causing it. Previously titled "The New World," it picks up some time after the last series, which I have been completely unshy about calling the best science fiction mini-series of 2009 (and, not coincidently, the only series of Torchwood I own). And now we have a trailer for it, as well as an Access Hollywood voice over that is completely neccesary (of course).

I guess I should note that the trailer does technically contain spoilers for previous Torchwood series, so be warned of that. But this is the first series that is being telecast for Starz and an American audience that might have never seen Torchwood. However, if you're a Who fan, it is somewhat worth checking out. The connections between the first two seasons of Torchwood and the second and third seasons of Doctor Who are amusing, and it also makes the season four finale make a bit more sense.

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Monday, May 23, 2011

Welcome back to your weekly Doctor Who Review (say that ten times fast (Oh, who am I kidding, that's probably easy - do it fifty times)). After last week's surprisingly great Neil Gaiman penned episode, we have supposedly set a precedent for this season's serials: great, meh, great... and maybe meh?

There's only one way to find out. Take a look after the cut for some thoughts on Matthew Graham's first episode in a two-parter, "The Rebel Flesh."

Johns and Lee Have Plans for Superman

- Posted by Walter Richardson on Monday, May 23, 2011

According to DC's blog, The Source, Geoff Johns and Jim Lee will be appearing at the Hero Complex Film Festival on June 11 to talk the Man of Steel. This makes sense, considering the upcoming Zack Snyder film, but there's one thing that the blog says that is particularly telling:
What does DC have in store for Superman and can this young, hot creative duo launch Clark Kent and his alter ego into the future?
Well, that's certainly interesting. Are Johns and Lee going to take over the book as writer and artist? There has been rumor of the two collaborating on a JLA book for some time, but that hasn't really gone anywhere. Then again, as they're involved more with the business side of things now (Lee especially), perhaps they're just the messengers for what's to come. Either way, keep your ear to the ground on June 11 (and by that I mean your browser on Multiversity Comics) in order to find out, especially since this will probably have a lot to do with the post-Flashpoint DCU.

Now that's a promising way to start off the week. Follow the cut for the full solicitation info.

The Weekend Week In Review (5/21/2011)

- Posted by Walter Richardson on Saturday, May 21, 2011

Want to keep up with the ever-advancing continuity porn of the DC and Marvel universes, but simply don't have the time or money to buy every ongoing? We're here to help. Our newest column, the Weekend Week In Review, gives you ((usually) very) brief synopses of what happened in a select few of DC and Marvel's titles — with a helping of sarcastic commentary — so that when some nasty old writer wants to punish you by heavily referencing a title you didn't pick up, you won't be left in the dark. Of course, that means that spoilers are in abundance after the cut, but I figure that you could figure that out.

End Your Friday With The Map Of Flashpoint

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Friday, May 20, 2011

It's Friday, Friday; you have to get down today. It's a law now. And you know what Friday means, right? It's Flashpoint Friday over DC's The Source! And since the comic is out, you'd think there was nothing else they could put out in promotion of the story, right?

Wrong! Today's Flashpoint Friday gives us the Map of Flashpoint by Rex Ogle and Freddie E. Williams II. Nukes galore and freakin' Nazis! As they say, "A World Without the World’s Greatest Superheroes certainly turned out differently." To say the least. If there was ever a time to go to Australia, I suppose it'd be now.

That's all for us this week! Enjoy tomorrow's Rapture everyone, and we'll hopefully be back on Monday to report more comic news! ... oh, who are we kidding. Multiversity is a group of sinners. We're not going anywhere unfortunately.

Friday Recommendation: Alex Toth's Eclipso

- Posted by Patrick Tobin on Friday, May 20, 2011

1960s DC: mostly crazy but occasionally, just occasionally, pure genius. I know, I know. "Genius" and "Eclipso" in the same thought pattern? Hop in the time machine after the jump and I'll explain myself.

Review: Batman #710

- Posted by Walter Richardson on Friday, May 20, 2011

Written by Tony Daniel
Illustrated by Steve Scott

Two-Face is back! As an unknown villain targets Two-Face and other Gotham City crimelords for extermination, Batman discovers that Kitrina Falcone, a.k.a. "CATGIRL," is next on the hit list! Can he save the junior mobster in time? And will helping Kitrina force Catwoman to get involved?
Every time a new Tony Daniel-written Batman arc rolls around, I give the writer/artist another shot. I don't know why, considering I'm always disappointed, but there you go. With such a bleak opening, I'm sure that you're expecting negative things to follow after the cut, and you're probably right in assuming that. Then again, perhaps this is all an elaborate ruse to surprise you with a "Just playing, this is awesome!" Ladies and gentlemen, place your bets…

Review: Astonishing X-Men #38

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Friday, May 20, 2011

Written by Christos Gage
Illustrated by Juan Bobillo

“MEANWHILE” Cyclops, Emma, Wolverine and Armor are off in Japan dealing with giant monsters. Meanwhile, something dire happens that demands the attention of the X-Men. With their leaders away, should the X-Men deny their help? HELL NO! Storm, Colossus and Kitty Pryde join Beast and Agent Brand to take on the Brood. But when intergalactic law prevents the destruction of an enemy who can only be defeated by extermination, the X-Men have a problem. Are Storm and her crew up to the task? And what is Cyclops going to say when he learns of this? This adventure takes place at the same time as the MONSTROUS arc concurrently happening in Astonishing X-Men in a way never before seen!
There are a lot of things that I love about Marvel - I'm not ashamed to admit that in any way. Some people don't like to show blatant loyalty to any company or brand, but me? Make Mine Marvel. Don't get me wrong - I love DC/Vertigo, Image, Dark Horse, Top Shelf, Archaia, BOOM! Studios, Oni - you name it. If it's a comic book, I'll want to read it. But I started comics as a Marvel fan, and if I had to pick, I'd stay with.

Why? Well, there are many reasons, but two of the big ones are the Ultimate line and the recently revamped Astonishing line. I love the notion that you can have an in-continuity story that's out-of-continuity at the same time, and mainly a place for talented creators to tell fun stories starring some of their favorite characters in a particular group. In this case? The X-Men. And now, we have two creators telling different stories every other issue in the pages of Astonishing X-Men, where it all started.

Now - I've already professed fond enjoyment for Daniel Way's over the top monster story featuring Jason Pearson's fantastic artwork. However, I've more often praised Christos Gage's work than I have Way's, and Gage is the writer of the second story with an artist I am admittedly unfamiliar with. So does the trend continue? Does Gage continue to beat Way, or does Way pull a surprising victory at the last second?

Lets find out after the cut.

First Look: Tom Hardy As Bane

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Friday, May 20, 2011

Well, there you have it. Thanks to a nice viral chase this morning, the first image from the Dark Knight Rises has been revealed, and it's Tom Hardy as Bane. While it's not a very clear shot, and we don't even get a full look at the mask here, it's still the first bit of what I can only assume is a long line of viral teases - just like with the previous film.

So how does it work? Warner launched thedarkknightrises.com today, which at first is nothing more than a black screen and a spot of odd chanting. However, because this is the internet and this is how these things go, a fan figured out that if you run a spectral analysis of the chanting, you get a hash tag for twitter: #thefirerises. If you tweet this, your twitter avatar appears at a new site where the avatars begin to form a shape. And, because this is the internet and this is how these things go, the final image has been cracked before the twitter image could be completed. Fun!

So there you have it. Thoughts on Bane? Do you like the image as it is? Do you want to see more? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Review: Batman & Robin #23

- Posted by Walter Richardson on Friday, May 20, 2011

Written by Judd Winick
Illustrated by Guillem March

Jason Todd - Batman's one-time sidekick, currently the anti-hero known as Red Hood - has been imprisoned in Arkham Asylum for the past several months. But after a period of good behavior, will a transfer to a lower-security prison mean reformation for Jason Todd... or is trouble waiting in the wings for Batman and Robin? Don't miss "The Streets Run Red" part one of three!
Recently, Jason Todd has received a boost in popularity due to the success of the animated film Under the Red Hood. Unfortunately for those who fell in love with the badass biker with a white stripe through his black hair, Grant Morrison had made the character a bit more… theatrical in Batman & Robin a few months before the movie's release. Luckily, Judd Winick — the man who reinvented Jason "Crowbar" Todd — is back to save the day! Awesome, right? Well, see after the cut.

Review: Uncanny X-Force #10

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Friday, May 20, 2011

Written by Rick Remender
Illustrated by Billy Tan and Rich Elson

A reporter prepares to release photographs of X-Force killing military personnel leaving the squad with one of the hardest choice of their lives, how to deal with her? Nothing can prepare you for the ending, or the ramifications as X-Force are forced to unite with a former servant of Apocalypse! Ramping up to one of the biggest chapters in X-history, and yes, you've heard it before-- but nothing will ever be the same.

The last time I reviewed Uncanny X-Force, I wasn't especially favorable to the one-and-done story of Magneto's past. While I generally think Uncanny X-Force is one of Marvel's best titles, let alone one of the best things Rick Remender has done for the company, that issue majorly missed the mark. However, one less-than-great issue certainly isn't going to stop me from reading one of my favorite titles - especially now that we've gotten to one of the first big "events" of the story: The Dark Angel Saga. It has been teased for quite some time, and now Remender is putting on the big show we've all been waiting for.

Hop after the cut for some thoughts on the latest issue.

Review: Amazing Spider-Man #661

- Posted by Joshua Mocle on Friday, May 20, 2011

Written by Christos Gage
Illustrated by Reilly Brown

After his work with the new FF wraps for the week, what can the original teenaged superhero teach the worlds most at risk group of super-powered teens? Find out when Spider-Man substitutes at the Avengers Academy! But it’s far from a normal day at school when a field trip is interrupted by a vengeful PSYCHO-MAN armed with hate, doubt and fear! Guest starring the FF, Giant-Man…. and the Malevolent Marvel Monster Mayhem of MONSTEROSO!

For a second I thought I was seeing double when I went to my local dealer comic shop this week and saw this issue and Avengers Academy #14 on the shelf. Both written by Christos Gage and both featuring the nubile heroes of the Avengers Academy, it took me a second to realize that they were different titles. However, under the hood, this was a 100% quality Spider-Man tale with all the heart and soul we’ve come to expect from “Big Time” era Spider-Man.

Image Comics Reunites Sarkar and Gastonny In New Series

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Friday, May 20, 2011

Image Press Release

Image Comics is pleased to announce that writer Sam Sarkar and artist Garrie Gastonny (Warren Ellis’ Supergod), the team behind Caliber: First Canon of Justice, have reunited to unlock the horror and action within their new miniseries THE VAULT.

THE VAULT is about a small team of treasure hunters, struggling to excavate a dangerous and legendary treasure pit before a massive storm hits Sable Island, the "Graveyard of the North Atlantic." Equipped with all the latest technology, the scientists believe they are prepared against all of nature's fury, but nothing can prepare them for what they are about to unleash.

"THE VAULT is kind of a contemporary Pandora’s Box story," explained creator and writer, Sam Sarkar. "Though it appears on the surface to be a pretty straightforward story, it has most of its mythology buried deeply. It gets uncovered both literally and figuratively as the pit gets excavated."

When asked how THE VAULT found its home at Image, Sarkar replied: "Well, I’m incredibly fortunate that most of the lasting gifts of Caliber were the relationships it helped to cement. Chief among them, David Elliott. Dave and I have soldiered through quite a few storms personally and professionally, and when I asked him to edit THE VAULT, he didn’t hesitate. There are few people I trust as much. I asked Dave what he thought the best way to release THE VAULT would be and Image was at the top of his list of publishers to approach. I’ve always been a fan of Image, not just because of their model, but because of the quality of titles they have represented and continue to represent."
