Celebrate The New Year With Super Hero Resolutions (Original Comics)

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Friday, December 30, 2011

We here at Multiversity are rather notorious (in our minds at least) for putting out rather silly New Years posts (see: 2010's uninspired nonsense, and 2011's drunken nonsense). That's why, as 2012 is coming up, we decided to do something a little bit different. Instead of trying to do something silly by ourself, we called up a few of our friends and got them to do silly things with us.

So, to usher in 2012, check behind the cut for a string of Super Hero Resolutions, brought to you by Multiversity and friends!

Yesterday brought the end of Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli's Vertigo Comics series DMZ, and to wrap that series up, MC EIC Matt Meylikhov and I are going to review the final issue together.

So, after the jump, you can find Matt and I talking through the 72nd and final issue of this highly renowned series. Was it a stellar wrap up to a great series, or did it fall below expectations?

You can find out after the jump.

Art of the Week (DMZ Edition)

- Posted by David Harper on Wednesday, December 28, 2011

As we mentioned earlier, this week brings the final issue of one of our favorite series - DMZ. Writer Brian Wood and artist Riccardo Burchielli have been working on this Vertigo series for a long time, and it's become one of our favorites for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is the diverse and stunning art featured within it.

While Burchielli worked on the bulk of it, artists like Nathan Fox, John Paul Leon, Ryan Kelly, Shawn Martinbrough, Cliff Chiang, Kristian Donaldson and others have put together incredible work that have made us fall in love with the characters and this world that has been created. This week on Art of the Week, we're highlighting examples of their art (not necessarily from DMZ) to coincide with its finale.

To start that off, we have the piece at the top of this article which, near as I can tell, is a pitch piece that Brian Wood himself created for DMZ. Many forget that Wood himself is a highly talented artist, and it seemed only right to start off with him. You can find the rest after the jump.

Multiversity 101: Creators to Watch For in 2012

- Posted by David Harper on Tuesday, December 27, 2011

One of 2011's Best New Creator Showcases
2011 was an incredible year for comics that saw a lot of new(er) creators make indelible impressions on the medium. People like Luther Strode's Justin Jordan and Tradd Moore, Reed Gunther's the Brothers Houghton, The Red Wing's Nick Pitarra, and a range of others provided work amongst the best of the year, and they look to carry forward in 2012 with efforts that could surpass what they've already done.

The question to me is this: who is set to make the leap in 2012? Who will have the industry buzzing with their work by the end of 2012? I take a stab at figuring that out after the jump.

From the desk of Brian Salvatore, friend to all the Jews:

L’chaim! The Multiversity Comics staff is a multicultural bunch, and wanted to spread around the holiday cheer to our chosen brethren with our new series: Multiversity Lights the Menorah!

For the last seven nights, we have talked about trends/stories/runs that lasted far longer than we expected. For tonight, the final night of Hanukkah, we are turning over a new leaf: optimism. Call it a Hanukkah miracle if you must, but we want to shed some light on some things that we currently love about comics. So, we are using this last night of Hanukkah to hope that the success of these topics are kismet, and next year we will still be celebrating their existence.

So, let’s all grab the shammus and light the final candle of 2011!

Comics Should Be Cheap! (12/28/11)

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Tuesday, December 27, 2011

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can't afford everything they're interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That's why we're here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked "What would you buy this week if you couldn't go over $20?" and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget.

Follow the cut to see everyone's picks for the week.

Each night, at sundown, we will light another candle on the Menorah and tell a tale of a story, creator’s run, or general theme in comics that, much like the oil that lasted eight nights for the Israelites, went on for far longer than any of us could have expected. Taking up arms with Judah Maccabee to topple Antiochus' regime and reclaim Judea is Matthew Meylikhov, bringing Jeph Loeb’s Rulk as his weapon of choice.

Multiversity's 2011 Holiday Wishlists

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Monday, December 26, 2011

Because we still don't have a graphic designer on staff, here's more MS Paint!
Every year, a few of us like to get together and theorize, "If I could wish for a few things to happen next year, what would they be?" We think and we think, we think and we think, we think some more, and then we put together a few short lists of hopes and dreams aimed at Marvel and DC. After all, it is fun sometimes to guess at what could possibly maybe happen within the next year from two comic company giants.

We know what you might be thinking already, though. "Gee, Multiversity! Why only Marvel and DC? Why not some of the other comic companies as well?" We hear your thoughts, but realistically, it's much easier to theorize what a company might do with a bunch of company-owned properties as opposed to creator-owned books. It is much easier say "Make Wolverine wear a hat!" than say "Gee, I sure hope Morning Glories explains the true identity of Ms. Dagney," because one is infinitely more likely to happen than the other. Ms. Dagney will remain an enigma for the ages.

With all that in mind, check behind the cut for some of the staff's wishlists for 2012.

Review: Tales Designed to Thrizzle #7

- Posted by Patrick Tobin on Saturday, December 24, 2011

Written and Illustrated by Michael Kupperman

In this issue Quincy, M.E. makes his comic book debut, struggling through the fantastic landscapes of his own dreams in “Quinception,” in which St. Peter also gets his own comic book. Snake ‘n’ Bacon make an appearance in “Reservoir Dogs 2,” where the gang reunites for another caper. Twain and Einstein deal with some family issues, and a special section of History Comics presents the story of the Kennedy/Nixon debate and the incredible saga of Bertrand DeCoupeur, alias The Scythe! Plus a photocomic starring comedian Julie Klausner, “Voyage To Narnia.”

It's the holidays, so this is all you damn well get in the way of content. (Well, that and it's also a weekend.) In the tradition of hostage-takers worldwide, I will use this captive audience to point out a comic that you should be reading, but that you probably aren't. This is different from Friday Recommendation because it's Saturday, but more importantly, it's a holiday miracle -- after the jump.

Friday Recommendation: James Robinson's Justice League of America

- Posted by Brian Salvatore on Friday, December 23, 2011

The Big 7: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, the Flash, Aquaman and Martian Manhunter. This is the classic lineup of the Justice League of America. Sure, there are other iconic members: Black Canary, Green Arrow, Elongated Man, Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, and the Atom, just to name a few, but those seven have been the cornerstone of the franchise, in one way or another, since the beginning.

In 2009, James Robinson began his run writing the adventures of the Justice League, from the poorly received Cry for Justice on through the end of the Justice League of America title before being relaunched as, simply, Justice League. Over this time, Robinson gave prominent placement to characters like Blue Jay, Congorilla, Jade, Mon-El, Saint Walker and Cyborg. Now, whether this was more of an editorial issue with finding a way to fit the “Big 7” in or not (most likely it was), Robinson rolled with the punches. This caused a lot of people to, probably without reading a single issue, shit all over his run as being not worthy of the title of the book.

However, these people were wrong; Robinson’s run celebrated all of the best aspects of what it meant to be the Justice League of America, and did so in ways that managed to feel new and exciting. Click the jump to read specifically about the final arc of Robinson’s run, "The Rise of Eclipso," and why it is one of the most quintessential Justice League stories in recent memory.

Multiversity Comics Presents: Kagan McLeod

- Posted by David Harper on Friday, December 23, 2011

Today at MC, we have a chat with writer/artist Kagan McLeod. For those that don't know him, he was the creator of one of our favorite graphic novels of 2011 - Infinite Kung Fu. That Top Shelf title was an absolute blast, combining elements of kung fu, blaxploitation, supernatural and more into one exciting blend of comic book storytelling.

We talk with Kagan about how he brought the story together, what his influences were, how he developed the powerful visual style of the book, whether or not we'll ever see more in this world he created, and a whole lot more. You can find our chat with him after the jump.

Five More Comics To Watch For In 2012

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Friday, December 23, 2011

We couldn't think of a good header image, so here's a poster from that silly disaster porn film with John Cusack
We shared with you five Image books, five Dark Horse books and five IDW books to look for in 2012, but today we take a a slightly different approach.

We don't want to discredit other publishers whose work we enjoy, but with other publishers, we had a bit more of a difficult time combing through limited solicit information to see what exactly was coming out -- specifically because not all companies do monthly solicitations to the extent that the others we've discussed do.

That being said, there are still plenty of comics that we have heard are coming out that should be worth watching for in 2012. While we couldn't possibly give you every book, we've hand selected five titles that we're looking forward to reading/talking about in the next year -- and those books all await your attention after the jump.

Assuming the world doesn't end, that is.

Multiversity's 2010 Holiday Wishlists In Review

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Friday, December 23, 2011

In lieu of a professionally made graphic, here's something we made in MS Paint!
A general holiday tradition here at Multiversity is for a few of us to look at the past year and ask ourselves, "Gee, what things do we want from Marvel or DC in the next year?" We as fans are a rather entitled bunch, after all, and we certainly are never too ashamed to throw hissy fits regularly when we don't get our way (that is, after all, what the internet is for!). We usually only do this for Marvel and DC, though; somehow it is just not as effective when we admonish a creator-owned book for -- well, doing what it wants.

Last year, myself, Josh, Gil and Brandon all put together lists of things that we wanted to see from Marvel and DC in 2011. Some of our prayers were answered, some weren't, and absolutely none of us asked for DC to cancel all of their books and relaunch their entire line. That would've been awesome if one of us had, but we'll have to chalk it up for a missed opportunity. Either way, check behind the cut for our reflections from last year, and stay tuned for our 2012 Wishlists -- coming soon!

Review: X-Factor #229

- Posted by Walter Richardson on Friday, December 23, 2011

Written by Peter David
Illustrated by Manuela Lupacchino

Layla Miller. Jamie Madrox. Husband and wife. Lying murdered in their honeymoon suite. The moment you thought would never come is here, and not only are you a witness to it, but so is Jamie Madrox himself. We feel safe in saying that this is X-Factor as you've never seen them before in the first part of what has to be the trippiest arc in the history of Marvel.
X-Factor #227 ended quite suddenly, with an out-of-nowhere turn of the screw that left us here at Multiversity scratching our heads. #228 didn't really answer any questions — at least, not the big one we were looking to have answered — but with #229 it looks like Peter David is getting back to business.

Follow the cut and see if we've been duped (I am so, so sorry).

Review: Justice League #4

- Posted by Brian Salvatore on Friday, December 23, 2011

Written by Geoff Johns
Illustrated by Jim Lee

The superstar team of Geoff Johns and Jim Lee continue the origin of the Justice League as The World's Greatest Heroes face the might of Apokolips – and find aid in an unlikely hero, as Cyborg is created!
Last time we chatted about Justice League, I hypothesized that the entire New 52 was going to be a direct sequel to the Green Lantern movie before it tanked at the box office, and that Justice League was supposed to read like an action film.  Not to get a big head about it, but reading issue #4 has only further proved my theory correct and, in doing so, has left me with very little to say about this comic.

So, in the spirit of the Christmas season, I am going to, instead, write a wish list to Johns/Lee, in hopes that they will be my own personal Santa - someone to answer my prayers, someone who cares. Reach out and touch Christmas (after the jump)!

Review: Memorial #1

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Friday, December 23, 2011

Written by Chris Roberson
Illustrated by Rich Ellis

New York Times best-selling author and Eisner-nominated creator of iZombie, Chris Roberson, delivers a magical ongoing new series. Memorial is the story of Em, a young woman who arrives at a hospital in Portland, Oregon, with no memory of her past. A year later, she has rebuilt her life, only to find her existence thrown into turmoil after she inherits a magical shop. The kind that appears in an alley one instance and disappears the next. Em is drawn into a supernatural conflict between beings that not only represent, but are, fundamental elements of the universe itself. All of existence is at stake, so there’s only a little pressure on Em, the magical shop, and a talking cat. With art by the fantastical Rich Ellis, and covers by the legendary Michael WM Kaluta.
Chris Roberson is here with a brand new creator-owned ongoing, and this time he's brought Rich Ellis along for the ride.

Let's go through the shifting door and see if Roberson and Ellis' shop of goodies is all we could hope for -- after the cut. (I swear that line makes sense if you've read the comic.)

When Exactly Is Batman: Leviathan?

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Friday, December 23, 2011

This past week saw the release of the long anticipated finale to Morrison's first Batman, Inc. story, Leviathan Strikes! The book collected what would have been issues #8 and #9, by Morrison, Cameron Stewart and Chris Burnham, respectively, and it represents the beginning of the end of Morrison's rather epic run on Batman and his mythology. After this, we won't see Morrison on a Batman book until sometime next year, when he and Burnham finish their work on the 12-issue Batman: Leviathan series.

Of course, an interesting question is now posed to us as the readers. In the beginning of Leviathan Strikes, during Cameron Stewart's portion, a caveat to the story is introduced: "The events of this issue take place before FLASHPOINT and the New 52." This both explains to confused readers why Batman's costume is different, why Dick appears in a Batman costume, and why Stephanie Brown is still Batgirl (assuming that readers who planned to buy Leviathan Strikes didn't know that the book was really just two delayed issues being released as one).

However, the question this poses is this -- will Batman: Leviathan, the 2012 series by Morrison and Burnham, also take place before Flashpoint? After all, what is continuity if not just a word thrown out there in an attempt to explain the nuances of how all these crazy stories could be connected in any form of linear fashion. Generally speaking, there is no real reason for DC to tell Morrison to fit Leviathan into the new continuity. Why mess with a good thing? (Rhetorically speaking, of course).

I suppose the other possibility is that DC plans to switch things back to the old continuity just in time for Morrison to get back to what he was doing. But that'd just be silly... wouldn't it?

Only time will tell.

Maggott Watch: Maggot Is A Poet

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Friday, December 23, 2011

What, did you think we were kidding when we started a Maggott Watch article series? Because we weren't.

In this week's Wolverine and the X-Men, as all of the various hubbub dies down and things return to whatever passes for normal around those parts, the children gathered atop a hill to read some poetry, beginning with "An Ode To Eany and Meany" by none other than the wonderful poet, Japheth (aka Maggott). This marks the second joke made at Maggott's expense in the first arc of the series alone, which makes one wonder just how much longer we'll have to wait before the character shows up.

Of course, Jason Aaron has been quite adamant that Maggott will not be making an appearance in the title. Yet, at issue #3, we already have two mentions of the character that is seemingly otherwise irrelevant. Methinks the lad doth protest too much?

Stay tuned for more up to the second Maggott news as we get it.

Longbox Diving - The Crew

- Posted by Joshua Mocle on Thursday, December 22, 2011

Throughout the 90s and the early 2000s, Christopher Priest (or simply Priest for a good while) was one of the most prolific and critically acclaimed writers in mainstream comics. His impact on books like Black Panther and Captain America & The Falcon is immense and the highly politicized, street level storytelling her infused his books during that time is some of the most influential work of the genre. However, around mid-2005 he disappeared from comics and to this day many have wondered whether a comeback was on the way for Priest or it the comics world has truly seen the last of him.

However, one of the most beloved gems of the later-period Priest work is a book called The Crew. This short lived ongoing (it lasted 7 issues before being uncerimoniously cancelled) was as thoughtful and challenging as any of Priest's works, but was in a lot of ways doomed from the state due to the connotations that surrounded it's particular group of characters and it's immensely short lifespan probably didn't help in the "people remembering it" department.

But I remember it, and you can click on down to find out why.

Review: The Adventures of Tintin

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Thursday, December 22, 2011

I find that, when it comes to film adaptations of comics, I usually fall to two different sets of thought. If a character is being adapted, such as Green Lantern and Wolverine, I am much less harsh in terms of critiques, because no specific story is being adapted, but rather bits and pieces of a larger mythos. If a graphic novel is being adapted, such as Watchmen or Sin City, I am a love it or hate it kind of guy based on how close to the source material they stay. After all, the story is already written; are they not trying to just bring an already established tale to life? That makes for something that is either a success or a failure, really.

The Adventures of Tintin is an adaptation of not one graphic novel, but two! And to make matters worse, a) I love Tintin and b) I'm judgmental and picky! Blistering barnacles!

Read on to find out why I've been described as "bitter film nerd at large", and see if Tintin can survive my criteria.

Multiversity Lights the Menorah: Night Two

- Posted by Gilbert Short on Wednesday, December 21, 2011

Graphic by Chad Bowers

From the desk of Brian Salvatore, friend to all the Jews:

L’chaim! The Multiversity Comics staff is a multicultural bunch, and wanted to spread around the holiday cheer to our chosen brethren with our new series: Multiversity Lights the Menorah!

Each night, at sundown, we will light a candle on the Menorah and tell a tale of a story, creator’s run, or general theme in comics that, much like the oil that lasted eight nights for the Israelites, went on for far longer than any of us could have expected. L’chaim! The Multiversity Comics staff is a multicultural bunch, and wanted to spread around the holiday cheer to our chosen brethren with our new series: Multiversity Lights the Menorah!

Each night, at sundown, we will light another candle on the Menorah and tell a tale of a story, creator’s run, or general theme in comics that, much like the oil that lasted eight nights for the Israelites, went on for far longer than any of us could have expected. Saying the blessing on the second night of Hanukkah is Gilbert Short, who will be telling the tale of the (never-ending) New Krypton Saga!

So, grab the shammus and light the second candle, Gil!

Wood and Cloonan's Conan Is Ready To Take Names, Commandeer Vessels (Preview)

- Posted by Matthew Meylikhov on Tuesday, December 20, 2011

Just yesterday, we published an article entitled Five Dark Horse Comics To Watch For In 2012. In it, I wrote a bit about Brian Wood and Becky Cloonan's upcoming run on Conan the Barbarian, which is easily one of my personal most highly anticipated books for 2012. Given the collaborative efforts of Wood and Cloonan on books such as Demo or Channel Zero: Jennie One and also given Wood's previous work on Northlanders (which, as it happens, featured a two-issue story illustrated by Becky Cloonan), Conan is an absolute shoe-in for next year's Viking Of The Year award.

With sharp writing and even sharper art, it is safe to say that this is the most excited any of us have been for a Conan-based property since we were kids and found out that that buff guy from Terminator was in a movie with some ridiculous lines and lots of head smashing. Suffice it to say, it's about time a Conan book is given to us that demands our attention.

The solicit information for the book is as follows:
In this sweeping adaptation of Robert E. Howard's fan-favorite "Queen of the Black Coast," Conan turns his back on the civilized world and takes to the high seas alongside the pirate queen Bêlit, setting the stage for an epic of romance, terror, and swashbuckling. This is Conan as you've never seen him, with the combination of one of Robert E. Howard's greatest tales and the most dynamic creative team in comics!

* A perfect jumping-on point for new readers!

*A bold, fresh take on the Cimmerian.

* "Queen of the Black Coast" is the most-requested Conan adaptation!
For an eight-page preview, please check behind the cut.
