One of our favorite things to do, as a site, is to look at the process behind making comics. There’s something really satisfying about seeing how a page goes from pencils to finished product and today, we get to do just that for the first five pages of “Bloodshot” #11. We have been given exclusive access to Pedro Andreo’s layouts and inks, as well as colorist Andrew Dalhouse’s finished pages. We also have some commentary by those creators, as well as editor Lysa Hawkins, to help show just how these pages came together.

Thanks for the fine folks at Valiant for setting us up with this art preview, and make sure to pick up the issue on February 24!

Pedro Andreo: This opening sequence was a blast to design. Firstly we start with an epic splash on Rampage and the Scarred Man blasting their way out of Omen’s bunker! I wanted this page to be as eyecatching as possible.

Pedro Andreo: Andrew Dalhouse really knocked it out of the park on these ones. The contrast between the oranges and blues? *chef kiss* Also, Bloodhound is back! Good boy! (That tank part you see in panel 4? That’s a Warhammer 40k Space Marine Rhino!)

Pedro Andreo: I wanted to capture the feel of loneliness and hopelessness that Danny is feeling with these panels, from the escape from the bunker to him wandering alone without a purpose. The first panel looks amazing coloured.

Andrew Dalhouse: I have only colored Rampage once before, so when I got the pages and saw him I was very excited. Pedro did such an awesome job on these pages. It made my job so much easier. I was able to use the yellow from the fire to contrast greatly with rampage’s dark blue skin. I played a lot with the lighting on page 3 panel 1 to create a dramatic entrance for Black Bar, making them stand out while still keeping them in shadows. Took some inspiration from J.J. Abrams with the lens flares on that panel.

Pedro Andreo: Oh man, that big panel with the lightning ended up sick! I spent almost a full day on it but the results were worth it! Rampage is back, baby!

Andrew Dalhouse: For the bottom panels on page 3, I went with brighter colors to give a hopeful feel. Then on page 4, it all goes dark again.

Lysa Hawkins: The opening first four pages take the reader on an abridged journey through Rampage’s past. Pedro’s expressions capture each moment so perfectly. You, the reader, get to feel what these characters are going through. Andrew’s coloring just enhances the experience, by the time you get to Bloodshot and crew on page five, you’ve felt pain, despair, and elation. But it’s the look in KT’s eyes in the last panel of page 5 that slays me. Back off her XO’s.

Pedro Andreo: Loved designing the X-O’s cereal box, what a fun idea by Tim Seeley. The relationship dynamic between the three characters starts developing and it’s so much fun to draw them interacting. Plus, maybe you can spot a little easter egg and learn about what I was listening to while working on this page!
