Comics Should Be Cheap! (10/21/2015)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Leo’s Picks:

The Paybacks #2 ($3.99) – Donny Cates and Eliot Rahal can write some of the most outright fun comics out there. Adding Geoff Shaw and Lauren Affe on art and colors only helps to make “The Paybacks” a book worth keeping up with each month.

Book of Death: Fall of X-O Manowar ($3.99) – Valiant is doing so many things right when it comes to superheroes, shared universes, and event comics. As a fan of X-O, I have to check out this one-shot and see what the future of the Valiant Universe may or may not have in store for Aric.

Total : $7.98. Honestly, this is a really light week for me. As one who tends to stay away from post-reboot Big 2 for a bit, there’s just not a whole lot out there for me this week.

Ken’s Picks:

Uncanny Inhumans #1 ($4.99)– I actually have been enjoying Charles Soule’s run on Inhumans (and for more reasons besides “it pisses off fanboys”). I am however waiting for a more “Royal Family”-centric book and this seems to be it, considering the events of the zero issue in April that dealt with Kang and Black Bolt and Medusa’s son, Ahura.

Karnak #1 ($3.99)– “Ugh! Warren Ellis will probably only be on the book for five issues!” Yeah, and they’ll probably be some of the best issues this year. Plus: That David Aja cover!

Gotham Academy #11 ($2.99)– The countdown to the confrontation between Olive and Calamity continues as well as the countdown to the reveal of the fact that Colton is totally crushing on Kyle. What? Don’t pretend like you didn’t guess.

Darth Vader #11 ($3.99)– *Sith Lord Intensifies*

Ivar, Timewalker #10 ($3.99)– Van Lente and Perez are going to stab you in the heart. Enjoy!

Total: $19.95. Phew! Just made it!

Kevin’s Picks:

Clean Room #1 ($3.99)– I will admit, I am not a reader of Gail Simone’s work. I have a passing familiarity with her work and that she is loved by many fans. However, I am a HUGE fan of Vertigo books. That is enough to give this one a go even if I might not like the writer in question.

Karnak #1 ($3.99)– Here is another book that I am not totally familiar with, this time being the main character. I had to look up exactly who Karnak was but given Marvel’s push for Inhumans it seems decent enough. That being said, Warren Ellis is likely the right choice to flesh this character out. If it is anything like his recent “Moon Knight” run, this will be a highlight of the new Marvel Universe.

Cognetic #1 ($4.99)– James Tynion IV has carved out a nice little niche at Boom! Studios in the last calendar year. From “The Woods” all the way to “UFOlogy”, Tynion runs the football field of ideas to give something unique. “Cognetic” will be no different in that regard. Do not let the high price tag fool you either, all 48 pages in this one will be worth it.

Total: $12.97 – A quite week for new stuff, but quality none the less. There are however great trades available for under $20 this week that include Wolf Moon, The Brides Of Helheim, Memetic and Wild’s End Vol 1.: First Light.

Matt Garcia’s Picks:

Cognetic #1 ($4.99) – James Tynion IV and Eryk Donovan turned in a solid apocalyptic thriller last year with “Memetic,” so their reunion definitely has some expectations going into it. Another end-of-the-world story, this one’s dealing with two hive minds duking it out for control of humanity. I’m interested in seeing how Donovan and Tynion’s collaborative relationship grows.

Continued below

Giant Days #7 ($3.99) – This charming and funny college series returns, with new artist Max Sorin taking over from Lissa Treiman. Genuine and heartfelt, this is one of the most enjoyable slice-of-life comics out right now. Glad to see it back.

Star Wars: Journey to The Force Awakens – Shattered Empire #4 ($3.99) – I think the title of this book is longer than the actual book itself. In any case, Greg Rucka’s been having a blast with these “Star Wars” books and though Marco Checchetto’s art is inconsistent, this book has been one of the stronger “Star Wars” miniseries.

Shutter #16 ($3.99) – “Shutter” is one of my favorite ongoings. Of course I’m not going to miss it.

Total: $16.96

Greg’s Picks:

Martian Manhunter #5 ($2.99) – J’onn J’onnz has been a tough character to get a handle on creatively. For every story or run that gets him, there are so many more that don’t. Thankfully, Rob Williams gets him and shows the character’s strength is not just in his muscles and powers, but also in his soul. Eddy Barrows his doing career-work on this book as well, so please consider giving the book a shot. Also? Mr. Biscuits, THE character find of 2015!

Karnak #1 ($3.99) – Warren Ellis is many things as a comics writer, but I don’t think being a chameleon is one. He can write more than one story, but the majority of his work has certain recurring themes and archetypes, made more pronounced by his distinct brand of sarcastic banter. Karnak, the weakness-spotting karate-wielding Inhuman, seems like the type of character Ellis would toss off as a line joke in one of his mailing list emails. But no. Karnak is real. Karnak is drawn by Gerardo Zaffino. Karnak will karate-strike your brain and your wallet. Karnak must be seen to be believed.

Shutter #16 ($3.99) – They used to call him Alarm Cat, but now they call him Cassius. Leila del Duca might be imaging “Akira” something fierce on this cover, but “Shutter” is a book like no other on the stands. Alarm Cat was originally slated to be killed by writer Joe Keatinge. Leila’s pleading got him a stay of execution, but not a free ride through the series. Losing his head (literally) turned the usually positive robot into a born-again…intellectual? Revolutionary? Psychotic? I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Usagi Yojimbo #149 ($3.50) – Another flawless issue of the ongoing samurai rabbit saga. If you’re already getting this book, don’t stop now. If you aren’t getting this book already, this is a perfect issue to start.

The Fade Out #10 ($3.50) – We’re officially in the third act of this 12-issue series. We should be hearing about the next Brubaker/Phillips joint soon, but don’t let the excitement of them overshadow how rock-solid this book has been.

Total: $17.97

Keith’s Picks:

The Multiversity Deluxe Edition ($49.99) – The instant classic that is Grant Morrison’s “The Multiversity” is released this week in a big hardcover collection. With superb artists to assist him in bringing his vision to life on the comic page, Morrison’s revelatory epic belongs on every comic lover’s shelf.

Total: $49.99 – I know I’m straying very, very far from the rule of twenty bucks a week, but how can this not be the highlight graphic novel of the week, if not the year?
