Comics Should Be Cheap! (1/14/2015)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Vince’s Picks:

Boom Box 2014 Mix Tape #1 ($9.99) – I voted these guys and gals as the #1 Publisher of 2014. How did they beat out Image Comics, you might ask? Well, you can’t deny the across-the-board quality over at Image, but no one surprised and delighted me more than Boom! Studios in 2014. I expect that trend to continue in 2015, because even after another strong Image Expo, I’m still more geeked out about the new/underexposed talent that Boom! keeps putting in the public eye. The “Mix Tape” anthology of 2014 should be a good taste of all the stuff that has me so geeked, if you haven’t taken much of a look at the Boom! offerings yet.

Teen Dog #5 ($3.99) – Speaking of Boom!, “Teen Dog” was a revelation for me in 2014. And without Boom!, I never would have known about Jake Lawrence, whose sense of humor is apparently right on the same wavelength as mine. One of my top comics of 2014 – one that rises to the top of my stack and is so endlessly readable.

Supreme: Blue Rose #6 ($2.99) – I’ve been pimping this book way more than I probably need to be, given that it’s a Warren Ellis-written, Image Comics published book based on Rob Liefeld’s most successful creator-owned creation. Still, I talk about it so much because of what a revelation Tula Lotay was last year. I can’t wait to see what she does next.

Total: $16.97

Keith’s Picks:

American Vampire Volume 7 ($22.99) – This is one of the few series that I collect in trades and it’s a pretty difficult wait because it’s one of my favorite series from one of my favorite writers. In this seventh volume, writer Scott Snyder and artist Rafael Albuquerque place our favorite vampires, Skinner Sweet and Pearl, within the turbulent era of 1960s America. If you don’t read this book yet or don’t like vampire stories, I’d still recommend picking up the first volume and delving into this well-crafted horror series mixed with history, humor, and drama.

Total: $22.99 – If you don’t want to go over the twenty buck limit, I’d recommend going cheap and picking up the new issues of the superb series “Batgirl” and “Grayson” (both $2.99 each).

Matthew Garcia’s Picks:

Boom! Box Mix Tape ($9.99) – A giant, oversized anthology of Boom! Box titles. One of the many things I like about Boom! and its slew of imprints is its willingness to experiment and try out different ways of delivering its material. This collection seems like a fun attempt, whether its revisiting resolved stories (“The Midas Flesh”) or teasing new ones (“Munchkin”).

Shutter #8 ($3.50) – You know what’s just as great as going on the Kate Kristopher adventures or trying to sort through all the story mysteries? Watching Leila del Duca become more and more fantastic and confident in her art. This book is usually at the top of my stack every week it comes out.

Grayson #6 ($2.99) – I was going to make some twink/daddy joke right here for this issue where Dick’s going “toe to toe” with Midnighter, but really, I couldn’t think of a solid enough one and this series has just been consistently solid.

Star Wars #1 ($4.99) – Like falling for the Dark Side, I’m giving in to the new Marvel Star Wars comics wave. The price tag is ridiculous, and even though it’s through Marvel, I think the publisher change could help to give it a different energy and life.

Total: $21.47. Oops.

James’ Picks:

Teen Dog #5 ($3.99) – TEEN DOG! TEEN DOG! TEEEEEEN DOOOOOOG!!!

WWE Superstars #11 ($3.99) – Okay, so this isn’t a comic book that I would recommend to anyone I like but “WWE Superstars” #11 continues to be the most bind-boggingly insane comic book being published today. And not in an endearingly insane way like “God Hates Astronauts”. If “WWE Superstars” was a dog, it would be taken behind a barn and shot before it gave another child rabies. This issue features the “Secret War” style story of all the WWE wrestlers of the past and present fighting each other. It’s even called “Secret Raw” because this comic was written by a wrathful god. I want to say that you should buy this to make sure WWE continues to publish it, but I am half-certain that WWE has never double checked any of these comics. If news broke out that these were published by Dean Ambrose outside of Jake Roberts’ basement, I would simply nod my head in agreement.

Vampirella #100 ($7.99) – I can’t believe Dynamite’s published a hundred issues of a vampire lady whose wardrobe consists entirely of cleavage and high collars. I mean I can, but I don’t want to have to think about it too much.

Total: $15.97

David’s Picks:

Jupiter’s Legacy #5 ($4.99) – I’ve actually really enjoyed this mini-series, and while I’m not sure how Millar and Quitely’s story will come to an end here, I’m excited to find out. I mean, it’s Millar and Quitely. I’m way into that. Let’s do this.

Shutter #8 ($3.50) – Year two of one of my favorite comics begins here, and I have a feeling Del Duca and Keatinge have big things in store for us here.

Lazarus #14 ($3.50) – This arc, “Conclave”, has been absolutely incredible. Greg Rucka and Michael Lark are bringing their A++++ game here, and I am very, very eager to see how it ends. DON’T KILL JOACQUIM!

The Walking Dead #136 ($2.99) – I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: “The Walking Dead” is incredible again. Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard are crushing it, and it’s one of my most anticipated releases each month again.

Star Wars #1 ($4.99) – While the team of Jason Aaron and John Cassaday is amazing, I’m not actually that crazy about Star Wars comics! I enjoyed some of John Jackson Miller’s work and the Expanded Universe books, but ones based around real, official stories? Mostly boring! So this is more of a curiosity for me. A very well-crafted curiosity, but a curiosity no less.

Total: $19.97 – a big week with some great releases

Zach’s Picks

Star Wars #1 ($4.99) – On one hand, this is just another Star Wars comic. On the other hand, this is literally THE Star Wars comic. The first official, canonical comic of the Disney Star Wars world. Written by a fantastically top-tier creative team. Sure, I wish it wasn’t set directly post Episode IV, with Brian Wood’s book treading that ground so recently. Still, this book is huge for me.

Jupiter’s Legacy #5 ($4.99) – It’s been a ridiculously long time since the last issue of “Jupiter’s Legacy,” so much so that I’ve pretty much forgotten what’s going on. What’s more, in the intervening months, it seems that this issue as been repurposed as the finale to the first volume of the series. Let’s be real though, I’m pretty ambivalent about all that, I’m in it for that sweet, sweet Quitely art.

Total: $9.98
