Comics Should Be Cheap! (7/15/2015)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Leo’s Picks:

Postal #5 ($3.99) – I admit, I never gave “Postal” a second glance until a friend told me to check it out recently. A town full of criminals is already an interesting idea, but when the man who made that town what it is comes back to reclaim his kingdom, then things really get interesting. Don’t make the same mistake I did and start reading now.

Godzilla in Hell #1 ($3.99) – I’m not a huge Godzilla fan, but there is literally nothing you could tell me that wouldn’t make me excited for this book. The title alone should sell the issue, not to mention that Stokoe art.

Drifter #6 ($3.50) – It doesn’t always get a bunch of press, but “Drifter” has quietly been one of the best recent sci-fi comics. With a new arc kicking off, now is as good a time as any to get caught up on the story.

Total: $11.48. I’m probably missing something, but I’ve got enough left over to make a couple impulse buys.

Matt Garcia’s Picks:

Island #1 ($7.99) – I really love the concept of an ongoing comics magazine. There are only a couple that immediately come to mind — “Heavy Metal” and “Dark Horse Presents” — and I think it will be interesting to the material Brandon Graham and Emma Rios curate.

Adventure Time with Fionna and Cake #1 ($3.99) – Fionna and Cake are back in their next miniseries! Cake is too good at Card Wars and Fionna is sick of losing all the time, okay? These Adventure Time miniseries are always and consistently a bright and entertaining spot on the shelves.

Kaijumax #4 ($3.99) – Look: it’s Monster Island, except as a prison. Who knew those two genres would combine together and yield such entertaining results?

Lumberjanes #16 ($3.99) – Any week with a new “Lumberjanes” is a good week.

Total: $19.96

Keith’s Picks:

Batman: Second Chances ($19.99) – This trade paperback collects early issues from 1988 that feature Jason Todd and his birth as the second Robin. Before being murdered by the Joker and comic book readers in the classic “A Death in the Family” storyline, he was featured in tales that are underrated gems deserving of attention. The release of this collection is timely because of the Robin mantle’s 75th anniversary and the huge popularity of Red Hood.

Total: $19.99 – Since it’s a slow week for comics, it’s a perfect time to watch the awesomely addictive trailers for “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Suicide Squad” on a continuous loop. “Batman: Second Chances” is also a nice companion piece to the “BvS” trailer if a certain costume that’s glimpsed in it belongs to a certain dead Robin.
