Comics Should Be Cheap! (7/22/2015)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Leo’s Pick:

Motorcycle Samurai, Vol. 1: A Fiery Demise ($19.99) – Collecting the digital run of “Motorcycle Samurai” into a printed volume is going to be no easy task. As one of the few comics that really utilized Comixology’s “Guided View” format, it was constantly doing things in the digital version that no print comic would ever be capable of. I’ll have a (probably too long) interview with creator Chris Sheridan about the book and the digital to print transition, but this story is a great read no matter what the format it. It’s certain worth me plopping down my whole CSBC wad on it.

Total: $19.99. There’s still a lot of other good books to choose from, like “Burning Fields”, “Fight Club 2”, the “CMYK” trade, or two dozen others, but definitely give this trade a look!

Keith’s Picks:

Mind MGMT #35 ($3.99) – Although this is being touted as the final issue of “Mind MGMT”, we are still getting a one-shot next month that concludes what will be considered one of the greatest series in comic book history.

Grayson #10 ($3.99) – Spy shenanigans, sexiness, and Lex Luthor. This book has it all.

We Are Robin #2 ($3.99) – The first issue of this series was a pleasant surprise and I can’t wait to see where Lee Bermejo takes this new band of Robins.

Cyborg #1 ($2.99) – One of the founding members of the current Justice League finally gets his own title. I’ve never read anything by David Walker but I know Ivan Reis’ art will be gorgeous.

Total: $14.96 – The “Legends of the Dark Knight: Norm Breyfogle” ($49.99) collection is being released this week as well. Breyfogle is my favorite artist and one of the greatest Bat-artists ever. I hope this book gives him even more recognition that he so very much deserves.

Brian’s Picks:

Cyborg #1 ($2.99) – One of the most impressive debut issues of the year, and a breath of fresh air for a character who has been in the background for far too long.

Grayson #10 ($3.99) – One of the best examples of giving a book a chance – I was very down on the idea behind this direction for Dick, but this series has proved me wrong time and time again. It is now, perhaps, my favorite DC series.

Birthright #9 ($2.99) – Joshua Williamson writes a lot of books; not many people write books as enthralling as this one.

Total: $9.97

Matt Garcia’s Picks:

Power Up #1 ($3.99) – Kate Leth and Matt Cummings take the Chosen One/Sailor Moon conventions and completely remix them. In this series, all the wrong people are chosen and they’re given all the wrong powers, but they’re still going to do what they can to keep the world safe and fight evil. Bright and colorful and imaginative, Boom! Box continues to broaden the spectrum.

MIND MGMT #35 ($3.99) – The worst part about this is that there’s still two issues to go and Matt Kindt has got such a firm grip on our attention that the month between them is going to be agonizing. Seriously, though, this is a great series and all the tension Kindt’s built up over the last three years has only helped make this a truly memorable conclusion.

Grayson #10 ($3.99) – Look, I could go on and on about how sexy this book is, but it’s also a really fun, over the top spy story. Janin is only getting stronger at these expansive set pieces and King and Seeley’s rivalry to out-ridiculous each other has only made this book more entertaining. It’s ambitions aren’t high, but it’s been consistently achieving everything its set out to do.

It Will All Hurt #2 (8.00) – The quest continues! Farel Dalrymple’s webcomic from Study Group is a crazy piece of work and well worth your attention.
Total: $19.97
