Comics Should Be Cheap! (7/29/2015)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Leo’s Pick:

Southern Bastards #10 ($3.50) – What else is there, really, for me to pick? “Southern Bastards” continues to be my favorite book out there and only gets better with each issue as it dives further and further into the grime of Craw County. Of special note this issue is the Charleston benefit variant. If you’re picking up the print copy, try to get that cover. Proceeds of it will benefit the families of those shot in Charleston.

Manhattan Projects: The Sun Beyond The Stars #2 ($3.50) – It’s been an incredibly long wait for this issue, as it’s now three months late. That said, I still have hope for “Manhattan Projects”. It’s veered very far from it’s original alternate history slant and turned into straight sci-fi with characters who just happen to share names with various historical figures. Hopefully this issue makes it worth the wait and we don’t have to wait another three months for #3.

Total: $7.00. This is a really light week for me. Maybe I’ll find a cheap trade or something as well to round things out.

Matt Garcia’s Pick:

Sabrina #4 ($3.99) – This is honestly my favorite horror series being published right now. Also, things aren’t looking too good for Harvey.

Help Us Great Warrior #6 ($3.99) – Boom! took this series from eight issues to six, so Madeline Flores has a lot of action to pack in these last pages. Adorable and exciting, with some really cool monster designs and Saturday morning anime stylings, this has been such a great series.
Star Wars #7 ($3.99) – John Cassaday has bowed out and Simone Bianchi takes over for this one-shot issue focusing on Obi-Wan. Much has been said about Marvel rejuvenating the Star Wars comics, and they’ve been solid so far! This one’s about Obi-Wan, who’s like my second favorite character (ALEC GUINNESS FOR LIFE), so it’ll probably be plenty exciting.
Black Widow #20 ($3.99) – As far as I know, this is the longest running Black Widow title. It’s been messy, sure, but it’s been a usually solid title. I don’t know what’s next for Black Widow, but let’s nod toward what Noto and Edmonson managed to pull off.
Total: $15.96
Keith’s Picks:
Superman #42 ($3.99) – Gene Luen Yang’s first issue as writer of “Superman” (as well as Yang’s first arc)tells the story of how and why Clark Kent was outed as Superman. This issue teases Lois’ “betrayal” and the possibility that we’ll finally find out how Superman becomes persona non grata in Metropolis.

Batgirl Annual #3 ($4.99) – Dick Grayson, Helena Bertinelli, Spyral, and the Gotham Academy setting all make an appearance in an annual that sounds like a veritable smorgasbord of fun. To top it off, we get the artistic stylings of the amazing Bengal, David Lafuente, Ming Doyle, and Mingjue Helen Chen.

Gotham by Midnight Annual #1 ($4.99) – I’m not familiar with Christian Duce Fernandez’s art, but Ray Fawkes has been telling some excellent and chilling tales in the underappreciated “Gotham by Midnight” title. This annual sounds intriguing, with a tale set centuries ago and featuring the Gentleman Ghost.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina #4 ($3.99) – Madame Satan causes trouble in the newest issue and is sure to be just as exciting and gorgeous as the previous issues. Along with “Afterlife with Archie” and the recent first issue of “Archie”, Archie Comics is releasing some inventive and stunning work.

Sex Criminals # 11 ($3.50) – It was a long, hard wait but the time has finally come for one of the best titles to make us throb with excitement.

Total: $21.46
