Comics Should Be Cheap! (9/2/2015)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Leo’s Picks:

Broken World #4 ($3.99) – After a first issue that had just a perfect twist, I’ve been very interested in “Broken World”. Barbiere and Peterson have made a rather interesting mini so far, looking at the world after the supposed end of the world. It’s an apocalypse, but with all the build up and none of the real cataclysm. This final issue should be an nice way to end this journey of escaping the world after it should’ve ended.

Dying and the Dead #3 ($3.50) – Am I the only one that kinda forgot this book was still a thing? Even with the long wait between issues (6 months?), I’m looking forward to diving more into this Hickman/Bodenheim tale.

Plutona #1 ($2.99) – It’s Jeff Lemire and Emi Lenox. I love basically everything by the former and am very intrigued by the latter. All the early buzz about “Plutona” points to it being a really good book. I only hope it’s right.

Total: $10.48. A bit of a light week, but if you’ve got an extra $30 lying around, I highly recommend “Sweet Tooth Deluxe Edition Vol 1”. It’s easily one of my favorite comics ever and now it’s going to be collected in big, fat hardcovers. Very nice.

Kevin’s Picks:

Miracleman by Gaiman & Buckingham #1 ($4.99)– When Marvel announced Alan Moore’s (I mean the Original Writer, ugh) run would be re-released it seemed the impossible was possible. No here we are with Neil Gaiman’s run about to be reissued. I can imagine the great sense of validation Gaiman has with this release, which is a long time comig.

Daredevil #18 ($3.99)– As a lifelong DD fan this was easily one of the greatest runs the character has ever seen. Mark Waid & Chris Samnee created a complex, swashbuckling and earnest depiction of Matt Murdock. Having been through the ringer many times before this was a welcome change of pace. Let’s hope Charles Soule can achieve this with his upcoming interpretation.

Material #4 ($3.50)– Ales Kot is a fascinating and challenging writer maybe even the most. Material brings together all the elements of his previous works and puts it square in the middle of today’s political climate. It is an exercise in slight self-indulgence and college philosophy classes but it sure packs a punch.

Age Of Reptiles: Ancient Egyptians #4 ($3.99)– I am a recent convert to Ricardo Delgado’s masterwork and had I been missing out. This is what the comic medium is all about in terms of storytelling. These wordless stories pack so much punch it is impossible not to get a little misty while reading. I hope Delgado has more lined up for the future.

Plutona #1 ($2.99)– I have no issue saying this, Jeff Lemire is one of the most prolific comic writers of my generation. He do not place limits on himself and he continues to push the line further back. He is at it once again for Image for a story that looks to add to his already quirky resume.

Total: $19.46 – This is week of endings and new beginnings for so many excellent series. For those who are looking for something more finite, I will also have Lady Killer at $17.99 as my back up for this week.

Greg’s Picks:

Aliens: Salvation HC ($10.99) – Lemme throw some names out at you: Mignola. Gibbons. Nowlan. Hollingsworth. Robins. Any book that brings those talents together has to be worth 11 bucks. Especially if it’s a Dark Horse hardcover, right? And Mignola doing an Aliens (aka Xenomorph) comic? Just take my money now and give me this book because I NEED to see this! This story originally came out in 1993, so it’s basically pre-”Hellboy” Mignola but 1) that’s still awesome, 2) it’s inked by Kevin Nowlan, one of the few humans who can make Mignola’s work even creepier than usual, and 3) Mignola did a new illustration for the cover, so you do get to see current Mignola’s take on everyone’s favorite acid-bleeding face-hugger.

Miracleman by Gaiman & Buckingham #1 ($4.99) – Now that the ALAN MOORE run of Miracleman has been made available to the masses (although at a slightly higher price point than I would have liked), the real fun begins. Because the followup stories by Gaiman & Buckingham are less known but arguably better comics. And on top of getting those stories remastered and re-presented, we’re also getting that run finished with new material! The lads planned 18 issues of story and only 8 of them ever saw the light of day. So while we all knew where the ALAN MOORE issues were going, we have no idea where this series will lead us, and that has me so incredibly pumped I’ll plunk down the 5 bucks for the single issue to show my support.

Daredevil #18 ($3.99) – Of course, since I know this is the last issue of Daredevil I will most likely be being in single issues, a little bit of disposable income is becoming available. Waid & Samnee (with help from Marcos Martin, Paolo Rivera, Javier Rodriguez, Jason Copland, and others) have given us a run on Nelson & Murdock that is as defining, to me, as the Miller run or the Netflix show. I’m going to miss how effortlessly they made it look to deliver a perfect mainstream superhero book month after month. Their Daredevil was a bar exam that anyone wanting to do serial adventure fiction needs to pass before being licensed to practice that profession.

Total: $19.97

Matt Garcia’s Picks:

Plutona #1 ($2.99) – Come for Jeff Lemire; stay and be wowed by Emi Lenox.

8House: Kiem #1 ($2.99) – I’ve been digging what we’ve seen of the 8House world. Xurxo G. Penalta explores a new world full of astral projection soldiers and secret missions and I’m sold.

Total: $5.98 – Maybe use that extra cash to pick up Craig Thompson’s “Space Dumplins”, which just came out last week and you might have missed. You won’t regret it, either.

Mark’s Picks:

The Legend of Korra ― Book Four: Balance ― The Art of the Animated Series ($34.99) ― I’m actually kind of a bit heart broken about this. You see, I absolutely love the art books for Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, and there’s something incredibly sad knowing this will be the last one.

The last one.

Not only will I be picking this up from my local comic book store first thing in the morning, I’ll be rereading each of the preceeding art books. You can bet I’ll be reading each chapter while watching the corresponding episode with the commentary track on.

Then I’m going to go into some serious withdrawal.

Total: $34.99. Absolutely worth it.

Keith’s Picks:

Sweet Tooth Deluxe Edition Book One ($29.99) – One of writer/artist Jeff Lemire’s masterpieces is finally being released in well-deserved fancy editions. The first volume, which includes the series’ first twelve issues, is guaranteed to make you cry like a baby. Gus, who is part human and part animal, will quickly become one of your favorite characters of all time if you haven’t read this series yet.

Total: $29.99 – Treat yourself and spend an extra $9.99. It’s a pretty slow week, anyway.
