One of our favorite features we run at Multiversity is a yearly one that we run in August, titled “Artist August.” As many would note, artists tend to get much less focus in comics criticism and journalism than their writing counterparts, and during August, we spend our month to try and reverse that a bit. After all, we love artists and all they bring to the table. Comics are a visual medium, and the artists that we love are the storytellers who make this medium as special as it is quite often.
So what can you expect from Artist August? Well, our biggest lineup yet, as we talk to people like Marcos Martin, Michael Lark, Emma Rios, Mike Allred and Chris Burnham (amongst others) about their work, their art, their inspiration, and more, while also sharing features on their work. Where we can, we work with them on art process pieces and looks into their studios as well.
To kick things off, I’m extremely pleased to share that the first person we feature this Artist August is Kazu Kibuishi. Long a proponent of artists telling the stories they want in comics through his work on anthology series “Flight” (and its sister series “Explorer”), Kibuishi has seen his star rise dramatically thanks to career best work on his young adult graphic novel series “Amulet” and his role as the cover artist to the “Harry Potter” paperbacks. Personally, I own multiple prints of his work and have them hanging in my home, and have loved his work for a long time.
We’ll have an interview, art feature, process piece AND look at his studio today, and I couldn’t be more excited about that idea. Expect all that and more for the rest of the month.
Welcome to “Artist August.” We hope you enjoy the experience.
