This week on Got You Covered, we’ve got another solid top five with some regular favorites of this column making the list but a surprising first taking the top spot. What makes it? Find out after the jump, and thanks to Tim Daniel as per usual for the fantastic logo for the column.

5. Morning Glories #17
Art by Rodin Esquejo

Esquejo has been a constant in these rankings, and it’s because he does such a damned phenomenal job month in and month out. While this by no means was a favorite effort of his for me, it was another really solid cover, especially with the way the flower like designs infiltrate the corners of the cover. Esquejo has always excelled at conveying the otherworldly nature of the book, and this is another great example.

4. Scalped #57
Art by Jock

This is one of the more frustrating examples of the “We Can Be Heroes” covers, in that this image is all about mood and atmosphere but it gets snuffed out by the banner at the top. Oh well. It’s another strong cover from Jock – perhaps a little less powerful than usual, but effective in its storytelling – and it’s starting to really hit how close we are to the end. A damned shame, but I love that Jock has been involved since day one. It adds so much value to the series to have these stellar covers.

3. The Flash #7
Art by Francis Manapul

While this might be a more standard than usual example to make it this far onto my list, it’s hard to argue just how damned beautiful this cover is. I love the coloring, love the design, love the way all of the pieces of the image fit together. Everything. It’s just a top notch cover, and another effort that exemplifies how great this book is from cover to cover.

2. The Unwritten #35.5
Art by Yuko Shimizu

Oh Yuko. Always so great. This is another example of her work that so greatly emphasizes the value of looking at the cover, then reading it, then going back to look at the cover again. Once you do that, you really do realize just how much of the story is being told just in this image. It’s metaphorical and literal at the same time, but in a way that makes perfect sense. Plus, the design and level of detail is fantastic, with beautiful coloring on the page as well.

1. I, Vampire #7
Art by Andrea Sorrentino

The surprise winner of the week! I love Andrea Sorrentino’s art. He’s been killing on this book since day one, a book that has been one of the strongest titles for the New 52 if only because it has maintained the same creative team throughout. This cover exemplifies his strengths though: the moody, dark color palette; the way the JL Dark squad are laid out on Andrew Bennett’s body; the usage of negative space to emphasize the power of the image. It’s all there to make it an even more dynamic image, and once again, this is a book that suffers from the DC We Can Be Heroes banner. Which is why I’m choosing to use the version without it to emphasize the best parts of it. Sigh..
