Comics Should Be Cheap (1/20/21)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Chris’s Picks:

“Iron Fist: Heart of the Dragon” #1 ($3.99) – Hama, Rand, and Marvel fans, together again, with all the mythology Brubaker, Fraction et al. have added in the near fifty years since for Hama to play with. If nothing else, Dave Wachter’s art should be spectacular.

“Abbott 1973” #1 ($3.99) – The first “Abbott” series by Saladin Ahmed and Sami Kivela was an atmospheric supernatural detective story, and I have no reason to believe this long time coming follow-up won’t be similarly excellent.

“Life is Strange: Partners in Time” #4 ($3.99) – Last issue ended on a big cliffhanger, and given this chapter will be the end of Max, Chloe and Rachel’s adventures until the summer, I expect this one to similarly be a doozy.

Total: $11.97

Mark’s Picks:

Universe! – Volume 1 ($29.99) – I’m actually surprised I haven’t checked this out already. Originally published digitally on Panel Syndicate, the series was nominated for an Eisner for Best Digital Comic. Last year, I was introduced to Albert Monteys’s work in “Slaughterhouse-Five” and, well, look how that turned out. So now that “Universe!” is in print, I really should get caught up. All I know about the comic is that it’s a bunch of stand-alone stories that are in some way connected, though I’ve no idea what the connection is. I know I’m largely going into this one blind, but considering how much I’ve enjoyed Monteys’ work already, this doesn’t feel like a gamble at all.

Total: $29.99. I’ll also be picking up “Barbalien: Red Planet” #3.

Vince’s Picks:

Future State: Shazam #1 ($3.99) – There are many great creative names in DC’s “Future State” lineup, but of all the lesser known ones that haven’t done much if any work with the comics publisher before, Tim Sheridan has got to be the early MVP of the event, if you ask me. Sheridan’s “Teen Titans” uses a vast array of Titans characters to set up a new status quo for the team that refreshes everything, ties it to television continuity in a small but not insignificant way, and possibly even adds new characters to the mix. So, too, does Sheridan’s “Shazam”: taking a vast amalgamation of DC characters and placing them all in a spin cycle. It’s a comic that really gets back to that pre-Flashpoint feel, where all of these disparate elements of the DCU that don’t seem like they should go together, all live in the same space. Every page turn seems to feature Eduardo Pansica getting to draw some new, little-used element of DC Comics and fold it into the story in a satisfying way. A true surprise winner.

Crimson Flower #1 ($3.99) – A new Matt Kindt comic always gets at least a cursory glance from me.

Total: $7.98

Kate’s Picks:

Future State: Immortal Wonder Woman #1 ($5.99) – If there’s anyone that can make Diana Prince more of an immortal goddess than she already is, it’s Jen Bartel. And I’m looking forward to seeing what Alitha Martinez will also do. I’ve been rather impressed with the Future State books so far, let’s hope week 3 keeps up the momentum.

Abbott 1973 #1 ($3.99) – One of my favorite series of 2018 was “Abbott” and needless to say, I’m thrilled her story is not done just yet. Also, I love the Jenny Frison variant cover which has just the right amount of 70s nostalgia, earth tones and all.

We Swore To Meet In The Next Life And That’s When Things Got Weird ($12.99) – If you liked the premise of Your Name, I think you’ll like this as well.

Total: $22.97
