The Witcher – “Unbound” (S3E2, Netflix)

Geralt (Henry Cavill) and Jaskier (Joey Batey) visit their old friends Codringher (Simon Callow) and Fenn (Liz Carr) to learn where to pursue their oft-pursuer Reince (Sam Woolf). They direct Geralt to a spooky castle, and Jaskier, suspecting they’re not telling them everything, appeals to Prince Radovid (Hugh Skinner) with a romantic song. The Prince seems to be genuinely taken with Jaskier, even as he’s using him to get to Ciri. Meanwhile Yen (Anya Chalotra) and Ciri (Freya Allan) quarrel over whether it’s right to save people from their perceived terrible fates, not knowing what the consequences will be down the line, and bond over shared trauma on their way to Aretuza. Not knowing if she’ll be forgiven for freeing Cahir (Eamon Farren) last season, Yen sends a letter to Tissaia (MyAnna Buring) ahead of their arrival. Tissaia consults Vilgefortz (Mahesh Jadu) and they agree together to welcome them. Otherwise, things are tense at Aretuza, as a student has gone missing, and the Brotherhood struggles to repair their relationship with the northern kingdoms.

If that wasn’t enough plot for you, there’s a whole other half of the episode, and even more characters. Attacking northern caravans, having been demoted after he and Fringilla (Mimi Ndiweni) disappointed the Emperor of Nilfgaard last season, Cahir is rescued by Gallatin (Robbie Amell) who wants to work with him to conquer the northern kingdoms for Nilfgaard. Fringilla, now a prisoner tasting the Emperor’s wine in case it is poisoned, escapes in the body bag of a deceased cellmate. Back in Redania, Philippa (Cassie Clare) wants Djikstra (Graham McTavish) to see the usefulness of Prince Radovid, and he does, after the Prince reveals his brother King Vizimir (Ed Birch) secretly met with Nilfgaard. Reince tortures and murders Codringher and Fenn, and steals their cat, after they clumsily reveal they know what his master is really planning for Ciri. As he flees, he seems to be followed by Philippa in her owl form. Finally, Geralt investigates his lead on Reince, finds a horrific monster made from multiple victim’s bodies instead, and rescues a young woman who looks a little bit like Ciri, and who claims to be Ciri. –Laura Merrill
