The Witcher – “The Invitation” (S3E4, Netflix)

Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) is planning a conclave at Aretuza in an effort to unify the Northern Kingdoms against Nilfgaard. While Yennefer travels to Redania to invite Philippa (Cassie Clare), Dijkstra (Graham McTavish), and Radovid (Hugh Skinner), Geralt (Henry Cavill), Ciri (Freya Allan), and Jaskier (Joey Batey), take a boat to Aretuza together, and fight a frightening sea beast on the way. Geralt encourages Ciri to become a queen if that’s what she wants to do, and reveals to her the stakes of their fight against whomever is responsible for the horrifying human experiments from two episodes ago. On Yennefer’s way back to Aretuza, she escapes an attack from an illusion that looks like Geralt. Meanwhile, Emperor Emhyr (Bart Edwards) sends Cahir (Eamon Farren) to enlist Francesca (Mecia Simson) to find Ciri. Emhyr wants his daughter to take her place as Princess of Nilfgaard, and Francesca believes Ciri is destined to lead the Elves to freedom, but they both plan to conquer that bridge when they get to it.

Elsewhere on the continent, Fringilla (Mimi Ndiweni), believed dead by Emhyr and Cahir, hears about all the boats headed to the Conclave while she celebrates her freedom in a pub. On the eve of the conclave, Jaskier and Radovid share a kiss, as do Geralt and Yennefer. The latter couple deduce that their mysterious enemy is Stregebor (Lark Mikkelsen), but in the secret tunnels underneath Aretuza, Triss (Anna Shaffer) and Istredd (Royce Pierreson) compare notes and come to their own conclusion that the experiments are related to Istredd’s missing “Book of Monoliths.” Now every major character is at or on their way to Aretuza, promising an exciting tying together of all the threads in the mid-season finale next episode. –Laura Merrill
