Welcome back to Boomb Tube! Here, we will be catching you up on the week in comics TV, both through micro-reviews, as well as links to our full-length TV reviews. Mech Cadets – “Dark Matter” (S1E9, Netflix)

Stanford exits Buddy to realign the GDR satellite, as the others fight back against Shargs emerging from the large one’s body, and more eggs fall to Earth. At the Sky Corps HQ, Max informs Tanaka that Tombo’s been repaired and online, and he sets off to help. Before he does, Park makes a peace offering, giving Tanaka power cells (harvested from dead Robos) needed to repair Olivia’s mech. Tanaka doesn’t forgive Park, but says he’s doing it for her, and “for Charlie” anyway.

A newly hatched Sharg approaches the HQ, and Dolly suggests using one of the repaired Hero Force mechs as a bomb. (It was a little odd that she got the idea for using its “fuel” from her cleaner sprays, but oh well.) Adam gets to prove himself, launching the mech at the Sharg before ejecting his seat, and satisfyingly blowing the beast’s head off in the process. The subplot is also a good showcase for Ava, whose issues with her mother are dealt with beforehand, when she receives a phone call from her, expressing concern and pride in her daughter; it was a comic relief moment, amusingly interrupting the dramatic shot of the Engineering Corps awaiting the arrival of the Sharg, with a sweet pay off.

Up in space, Tanaka arrives to save Olivia, and slices and dices up the Sharg while Stanford manages to repair the GDR. It was a pretty thrilling sequence, partly thanks to the sheer carnage of all the Shargs’ blue blood in zero-G: it’s wild how violent the kills can be on a kids’ show, but I guess that’s what happens when censors only object to blood being red. Before they can celebrate, Buddy informs Stanford the large Sharg is a queen just waiting to gestate more eggs for another attack, and the quintet turn their attention to taking her out with one of the power cells. – Christopher Chiu-Tabet
