With all the pop culture focus on superheroes, it can be easy to forget that, for many years superheroes were very much out of favor with the comics-buying audience. What was in vogue, for many of those years, were Disney comics.
Although we typically think of Disney characters in films or on television, Disney characters have been appearing regularly in comics since 1930 in newspapers, and 1940 in their own books. Although in the United States these comics are no longer as popular, in other parts of the world, they remain incredibly popular.
Through reprints by Fantagraphics, IDW, and more, a lot of these classic stories have become more available to the average US reader. Specifically, the “Uncle Scrooge” reprints from Carl Barks and Don Rosa have been some of the best received reprinted material of the past decade or so, and have really shone a light on what was, for some time, a forgotten treasure of comics.
So, in honor or Mickey Mouse’s 90th birthday, we want to know: which is your favorite classic Disney comic? Vote in the poll, and let us know why in the comments!
