Yesterday began NaNoWriMo – National Novel Writing Month – an annual November tradition that gets thousands of creative folks to try their hand at writing an entire novel in one month. Musicians have FAWN (February Album Writing Month), novelists have NaNoWriMon. And while NaNoWriMo isn’t exactly comics related, there is a long history of comic writers making the jump over to prose.
For the purposes of this list, we tried to stick to folks for whom comics was their first home. I’m sure many of these writers wrote prose in their spare time or in college or whatever, but we got to know them first as comics writers. Similarly, a few of these folks began writing both simultaneously, but achieved comics success first.
There are some folks on the list whose novels are a logical extension of their comics work. Others have taken a different path in their novels than their comics would have suggested. It’s an interesting shift, and it produces some really varied work.
So, before you head out for the weekend, vote in the poll, and tell us if we neglected to include your favorite writer in the comments!
