The past week or so has seen a lot of focus in the comics media about the cancellation of the Batgirl film, and what it may mean for the future of DC’s films and television after the most recent merger that brought DC under the roof of Discovery Plus. While I, personally, haven’t heard many people praising this move, there has been some chatter about things like “to make an omelette, you’ve got to break a few eggs,” essentially saying that to fix the issues in the DCEU, there are going to be some losses.
Others have talked about the fact that, due to the Batgirl situation, as well as the Ezra Miller seemingly going off the rails, that one of DC’s biggest PR moves, getting Michael Keaton to return to the Batman role, may never see the light of day. This is obviously a small piece of a big puzzle, but the Keaton buzz was one of the bright spots of DC’s recent media properties. This is also a sign that Discovery Plus is willing to scorch the Earth in the effort to save a few bucks which, again, seems short-sighted at best.
Now, with Dwayne Johnson apparently as a decision maker for upcoming DC films, everything just seems like it’s jumbled with no real plan or mission going forward. Which, to be fair, is often how the DCEU, or Worlds of DC as they like to say, has often felt.
