Yesterday saw the worldwide release of the new, two-part Sailor Moon movie, Sailor Moon Eternal, on Netflix. Picking up from season three of Sailor Moon Crystal, it provides a much more faithful version of the ‘Dream’ arc from Naoko Takeuchi’s manga than the ’90s anime. To celebrate Sailor Moon’s first feature-length adventure since 1995, we had to ask: who is your favorite Sailor Guardian?
As great as a protagonist as Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon) is, many fans are likely to choose another of the Inner Senshi as their favorite, such as the studious Sailor Mercury; the headstrong Sailor Mars; the tough yet sensitive Sailor Jupiter; and Sailor Venus, the most experienced of the five, who was introduced before all the others in her own manga, “Sailor V.”
Then there’s the Outer Senshi, who include the groundbreaking Sailor Uranus and Neptune, lesbian lovers whose relationship was censored in the original North American dub of the cartoon; and the Sailor Starlights, the genderbending Guardians from beyond the Solar System, whose leader, Seiya, proved to be a worthy romantic rival to Usagi’s boyfriend Mamoru Chiba. Last but not least, there’s Chibusa, Usagi and Mamoru’s daughter from the 30th century, who is as central to the series as her mother, including the new movies.
There are many more Sailor Guardians in the comics, TV shows, and stage musicals, but those are the main 13. Be sure to check back for the results after voting on Monday, and in the meantime, enjoy the movie — all 160 minutes of it!
