Yesterday, the news broke that Marvel was ending its “Star Wars” ongoing series with #75 in November. This timing likely isn’t arbitrary; one month later, the Skywalker Saga wraps up with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. This seems like a logical time for Marvel to take a break, or at least reset, their publishing plans for Star Wars comics.
So far, the vast majority of Marvel’s Star Wars books have taken place during the era of the original trilogy. Aside from “Poe Dameron” and a few one-shots and miniseries, we’ve been following Luke, Leia, and Han through side stories, or following Darth Vader and Doctor Aphra – the one true original character to last from the Marvel era of comics – on their adventures. While “Doctor Aphra” has not been announced as ending yet, that wouldn’t be all that surprising, either.
So the question becomes, what will Star Wars comics look like at Marvel going forward. We know they’ve already farmed out “Star Wars Adventures” to IDW, as they do the rest of their all-ages line. Will they move into more Finn/Poe/Rey stories? Will the characters from the various animated series get their own titles? Will they take a page from Disney + and go for new characters that fit into old archetypes? Or will we see entirely new settings, ideas, and characters under the Star Wars banner?
