We’ve seen a fair number of long running series/creative teams recently wrap up important work. Yes, these things happen every year, but the past 12 months or so has seen an inordinately high number of ‘major’ works end. We’ve seen it across the Big 2, as well as at Image and BOOM!. For folks like us, who read a ton of comics, there are never enough hours in the day to read everything as it comes out, and so we often catch up by binging something after it has concluded.
We’ve identified nine series that fit the bill as being long running (approximately 50 issues or more), under a consistent creative vision (more or less), and felt important/iconic. For creator owned series, this led us to “Giant Days,” “The Wicked + The Divine,” “The Walking Dead,” and “East of West.” At DC, Tom King’s “Batman” and “Deathstroke” under Christopher Priest fit the bill, while Marvel had Jason Aaron’s “Thor” epic, G. Willow Wilson’s tenure with Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel), and Ryan North’s “Unbeatable Squirrel Girl.” (We are listing the Big 2 books by writer, due to the number of artists on those books, but don’t want to give the impression that they are the work of just one creative)
It is unfortunate that many of our readers and staff will be staying at home more over the next few weeks, and so we may have some time to pick up a new series. So, of these options, which one should they choose?
Check back on Monday for the results and, please, stay safe everyone.
