We’ve been doing this series about what to stream, and this week was slated to be Amazon Prime’s turn in the spotlight. But I was using DC Universe for something else, and I accidentally hit the ‘movies and TV’ tab, and was sort of astounded at how many shows are on the service right now. So, Amazon will have to wait, because today we are spotlighting DC Universe.
The oldest item on there is also one of the best, which are the Max Fleischer Superman cartoons. Aside from a couple with some very terrible stereotypes that were prevalent at the time, these are some of the most beautiful hand drawn animation of all time. There’s some dialogue, but almost all of the good stuff comes in the way that the action is presented.
But that’s just the tip of the iceberg; while there are still some notable missing pieces (Batman ’66 chief among them), there is a ton here. From stone cold classics like Batman: The Animated Series and Justice League Unlimited to cheesy 70s shows like Shazam to proto-Arrowverse material like Birds of Prey, and the classic 50s Adventures of Superman (which yours truly has been binging each summer), there is something for every DC loving taste. That said, there’s probably more cheese than gold, though The Flash from 1990 is a really fun trip.
There are also all of the exclusive series produced for the service, like Doom Patrol, Swamp Thing, and Harley Quinn, which starts its second season this weekend.
