Yesterday, the new direct market edition of the “Invincible” Compendium Vol. 1 was sitting on my steps, courtesy of Skybound Entertainment. As I was reading the press release that accompanied it, I couldn’t believe that it had been 20 years since the series first debuted at Image. And, the more that I thought about it, I realized that the release of “Invincible” #1 in January of 2003 is sort of the birth of the ‘modern’ Image Comics.
This is to take nothing away from the Image founders who, in launching their company, changed comics forever, but the first ten years of Image feels vastly different than the subsequent twenty. While some of the founders have continued with their original creations into its fourth decade, the books that have shaped and grown Image since 2003 don’t share a lot of DNA with “The Savage Dragon” or “Youngblood.”
So, we polled our staff to put together a ‘greatest hits’ album of Image’s 2003-2023 era. These aren’t the best books necessarily, but the books that define what Image has been since “Invincible” hit shelves. For today’s Reader Poll, we want to hear which of these books is your favorite. Vote in the poll, and then check back on Monday for the results.
And if you get a chance, revisit one of these books over the weekend. They’re not going to disappoint you.
