With the announcement that principal photography has begun on James Gunn’s Superman – formerly Superman: Legacy – this week felt like as good a time as any to look back on prior Superman films and ask our readers which of the live-action Superman movies is their favorite.
Now, some ground rules before we get started. We are not counting the serialized films starring Kirk Alyn because, while yes, they were shown in theaters, they are proto-television episodes, with cliffhangers and plotting that doesn’t really feel like a full length, feature film. We are also not counting any film that essentially is just a Superman cameo, like Black Adam or The Flash. We are also leaving out animated films because, frankly, there are a ton of them, and we’re trying to compare apples to apples here.
The only inclusions on the list that aren’t a ‘traditional’ Superman film are the Richard Donner cut of Superman II, which I’m mostly including because for so long it had been hyped up as the ‘best Superman film you never saw,’ and Superman and the Mole Men, which was a backdoor pilot to Adventures of Superman.
So, vote in our poll, and check back on Monday for the results!
