This week saw the release of the new “Universal Monsters: Dracula” series from Image/Skybound. A perfect series to start around Halloween, the book revisits the first and most famous line of monster movies from Universal Studios in the 1930s and 40s. nearly 100 years after Dracula, Bela Lugosi and Tod Browning are still responsible for the most iconic iteration of the character on screen. While the Skybound comic can’t legally use Bela Lugosi’s likeness, the book absolutely retains the tone and feel of that classic film.
Now, back in 2021, we asked what your favorite Universal Monster was, and our readers voted that Frankenstein’s Monster was their favorite. But this question is different: which monster would make the best leading role in a comic?
Personally, I love a good lycanthropy tale, so maybe the Wolfman? The Creature from the Black Lagoon is rife for a comic adaptation (not counting Dear Creature by Jonathan Case), and there’s so much you could do with a Mummy tale.
