This year at C2E2, I had quite a few opportunities to sit down with creators and chat about their current and upcoming works. We started yesterday with Dave Johnson, Chris Burnham, and Steve Niles.

Now for your reading enjoyment, we present Kevin Mellon, artist of “Heart” and “Creator Owned Heroes”.

Can you look back on your life and recall a single moment that made you want to work in comics?

Kevin Mellon: Um, probably just discovering comics and realizing it could be a job. Comics are better than prose or movies because any image with words is a comic. Even a credit card ad. It’s a universal medium that just drew me in.

We live in an age where there are many new tools for artists to choose from to practice their craft. What do you prefer for yourself? Do you use digital tools at all?

KM: I pencil digitally, and I’m starting to ink digitally too, but most of the time I still print off the digital pencils and use real ink.

Thanks to social networking, it’s a very connected world now. Does feedback (both positive and negative) with fans and critics through Twitter or other websites affect you?

KM: Positive is always great, but it makes me filter more. I try to always be aware of where it’s coming from. I treat it all with a grain of salt because it’s easier to be negative online. I respect it all, though.

Multiversity was a big fan of “Creator Owned Heroes”, a series that ended way too early. Given the chance, is there anything you’d do differently with the series?

KM: Retailers who ordered it loved it, but I think a lot of retailers weren’t aware of it or didnt understand the format and that we could have done a better job explaining what it was to them so they could order and sell it with confidence.

What are you working on now?

KM: Storyboarding “Archer” and working on some creator owned stuff. I wrote and drew a book called “Suicide Sisters” I’m hoping to get out this summer, but there’s no publisher yet. I have a third project [after “Gearhead” and “Lovestruck”] coming soon with Dennis Hopeless, but it hasn’t been announced yet.

What would be a dream project for you?

KM: I’d like to do more creator owned stuff. “Suicide Sisters” is the first thing that’s all me, and I want to do a lot more.

Last question – What’s the weirdest thing to happen to you so far at C2E2?

KM: Um…Nothing really. It’s been a really tame con so far.
