This year at C2E2, I had quite a few opportunities to sit down with creators and chat about their current and upcoming works. Now, writer Frank Barbiere takes some time to talk about his career and “Five Ghosts”.

How exactly did you start working in the industry?

Frank Barbiere: I read a Wizard article about Image getting their new creators through blind submissions. I was stunned, because I thought it was much harder to get in than that. I immediately opened up a word document and started writing. Later, I found artists through the internet.

I thought that was really cool though, because I had thought the only way to get into the industry was through Marvel or DC. But it’s not! That’s just one of, like, a million different ways.

We live in a fairly connected world with social networking. DOes feedback (both positive and negative) with fans and critics through Twitter or other websites affect you?

FB: No. I read everything, but I’m crazy and have thick skin. If some kid out in Florida thinks I’m stupid, it doesn’t bother me. Haters are gonna hate. I hope me saying I read it all doesn’t empower haters.

Often times, it seems art comes secondary to the writing for some fans and critics. Why do you think that divide exists?

FB: I disagree. Well, I used to be an English teacher. I think a lot of people jump from word balloon to word balloon without taking in the whole page. They fixate on what’s written, and forget to check the pictures. In “Five Ghosts”, there are lots of pages with little or no dialogue because I’m trying to force people to look at the art.

What would be a dream project for you?

FB: “Five Ghosts” is my dream project. We do whatever we want. A more corporate answer would be: I’m a Marvel guy. I would love to do a project for Marvel someday.

Right now, “Five Ghosts” is a five issue miniseries. Do you have plans to go beyond that?

FB: The first two issues have sold out and are getting reprintings. We have plans for a lot more. But we’ll be making an announcement soon, so keep your eyes open. And thanks for the support!
