Happy New Year! Our staff has some goals for our personal comics consumption in 2023, and we want to encourage y’all to do the same! So, each day this week, we’ll be sharing some of our thoughts and goals for the next 12 months. We’d love you to continue the conversation in the comments or on social media.

Question #3: A genre of comics I would like to explore deeper in 2023 is…

Jaina Hill: …manga. I’ve always been surrounded by every kind of otaku, but it was only in the last year that I really watched more than a single anime show. I think comics have to be next, I’m sure I can get over the backwards reading thing, right?

Mel Lake: …adventure comics outside the superhero mainstream. This is a selfish goal because I have the seed of an idea for an adventure comic and I’d like to develop the script for it this year. But first, I need to read more original adventure fantasy comics.

Brian Salvatore: …cosmic stuff! Comics have no special effects budget and can do anything. I want to read more stories that are set in galaxies far, far away.

Mark Tweedale: …romance. I’ve only occasionally dipped my toe into romance comics, but I’m already really enjoying “Hellboy in Love,” so why not?

Kate Kosturski: ….manga. The manga trend is not going away anytime soon, and every year I say this is the year I am going to read manga and I don’t. Well, 2023 is going to be that year. And there’s a lot of creative storytelling going on in manga that you don’t see in American comics.

Ryan Fitzmartin: …plain old superheroes! I feel like I’ve fallen behind on the superhero mainstream, and I want to stay on top of what great creators are doing. I want to read more X-Men, Batman, and good old Avengers. Superheroes are the beating heart of the comics industry and I would like to remind myself of how much I love them.

Elias Rosner: …I’m not sure. I don’t really have a genre in mind for this upcoming year since I want to try focusing on reading what I already like and figuring out what should be my core reading experiences. After two-three years of constant change, I think I need it.
