Art of the Week (2/29/2012)

We have a big post this week in art for you all to check out. Starting right beyond the cut, we take a trip into the X-Universe, with Gene Gonzales’ and Joe Pekar’s 2-Point Prespective on the sometimes dead but often resurrected Phoenix. Gene Gonzales brought her longtime paramour Scott along for the ride (but we won’t hold that against him).

Continuing in the X-Men franchise the omnipresent Phil Noto submitted a lovely character study on the Age of Apocalypse Nightcrawler preparing for an upcoming issue of Uncanny X-Force. Continuing the trip down Phil Noto Alley, he also posted a two character piece featuring the main heroine and main villainess in the GI Joe franchise, Scarlett and Baroness, respectively.

Following that, Nick Roche shares a cool black and white sketch of the eleventh doctor (because sketches are cool, as are the doctor). Ryan Ottley submitted another stunning (and I do mean STUNNING) black and white piece featuring the Extreme Studios creation Prophet, which turned into what could be a breathtaking page out of a comic book.

Sticking around in the creator owned characters for a moment, Jorge Munoz also shared a grisly picture of the Dale Keown’s Pitt. Following the foray into the Image world, Logan Faerber, Joseph Querio, and Giannis Milonogiannis posted a space theme, rendering a space dinosaur, rabbit, and gundam, respectively. Finally, Mike Hawthorne shares a great piece inspired by Zhora from Blade Runner.

The above Flash Gordon piece by Francesco Francavilla made the cut because of its dynamic presentation of a movie poster starring the classic sci-fi character that inspired a generation of properties like Star Wars and Star Trek. The yellow colors depict an alien environment perfect for the character of Flash Gordon and his adventures. Amazing work throughout!

Gilbert Short

Gilbert Short. The Man. The Myth. The Legend. When he's not reading comic books so you don't have to, he's likely listening to mediocre music or watching excellent television. Passionate about Giants baseball and 49ers football. When he was a kid he wanted to be The Ultimate Warrior. He still kind of does. His favorite character is Superman and he will argue with you about it if you try to convince him otherwise. He also happens to be the head of Social Media Relations, which means you should totally give him a follow onTwitter.
