Welcome, one and all, to Multiversity’s Art Of The Week! Each week, we scour the internet for the best artwork sourced from the blogs, Tumblrs, Twitters, and Instagrams of the best comic book and manga artists out there and curate them here for your viewing pleasure.
A few weeks ago Marvel announced that they would be reprinting the first arc of their new 2019 “Savage Sword of Conan” title in black and white, despite the fact that the actual series is in full color. Marvel announced that they would be doing this as a tribute to the original “Savage Sword of Conan” series which was published in the 1970’s. Although the 70’s series employed black and white (as well as as an oversized tabloid format) as a clever way to sidestep the Comics Code, many Conan fans still insist that Conan’s adventures look best when presented in black and white.
Of course, this is a reminder that the black and white format is still the preferred format of choice for many purists. Since the advent of comics with Rodolphe Töpffer’s “Histoire de Mr. Vieux Bois,” to modern underground comix, the black and white format is still going strong. So in this weeks AOTW, we will look at a bunch of art that looks great in black and White but (like Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life) probably would never work in color.
So enjoy this Black and white look at the world of comics and be sure to check back next week to see more exciting and rarely seen artwork from the world of comic books and manga.
