Art of the Week (Week of 02/08/2012)

We have a lot of great stuff for you this week. Steve Ellis, above, had the featured art for the week, joined by Massimo Carnevale and a BREATHTAKING Game of Thrones picture that you shouldn’t see if you have somehow never seen the final scene. After Massimo Carnevale, you’re treated to not one, not two but THREE awesome works by AotW mainstay Phil Noto. Following Noto’s great art with Kitty Pryde, Armor, and Big Barda, Joe Pekar and Gene Gonzales took the challenge “Batgirl” and knocked it out of the park. Following the Batgirls, we stick around in the DC Universe for a bit to see a stellar piece by Andy Kuhn, interpreting Buddy Baker, AKA Animal Man to the page. Then Ryan Ottley kills it with a DMZ piece; and last but not least, Stephen Mooney closes it out with a freakish Venom illustration that should get him on a Venom book, stat.

The piece above by Steve Ellis was a natural choice not only because it’s a fantastic piece of what looks like Shane not being a dick for once, and not only because the show returns this Sunday for more exciting and heartbreaking episodes, but because he was thisclose to making the featured piece last week for his wonderful Catwoman picture. But aside from that, the colors really set the mood that The Walking Dead lives in, and if they were to ever do the series in color, this is what it should look like! Great stuff!

Daenerys Targaryen by Massimo Carnevale

Kitty Pryde and Lockheed by Phil Noto

Hisako Ichiki AKA Armor by Phil Noto

Big Barda by Phil Noto

Cassandra Cain as Batgirl by Gene Gonzales

Barbara Gordon as Batgirl by Joe Pekar

Animal Man by Andy Kuhn

DMZ by Ryan Ottley

Venom by Stephen Mooney

Gilbert Short

Gilbert Short. The Man. The Myth. The Legend. When he's not reading comic books so you don't have to, he's likely listening to mediocre music or watching excellent television. Passionate about Giants baseball and 49ers football. When he was a kid he wanted to be The Ultimate Warrior. He still kind of does. His favorite character is Superman and he will argue with you about it if you try to convince him otherwise. He also happens to be the head of Social Media Relations, which means you should totally give him a follow onTwitter.
