Art Of The Week: Week Of 09/02/2015

Last Friday would have been Jack Kirby’s 98th birthday. Kirby was an artist who continues to be hailed as one of the kings of the comic book medium. He was an artist whose influence is still so widespread that I genuinely feel underqualified to really talk about him. However, he created or helped created some of the greatest and most long-lasting characters and concepts at Marvel and DC. My favourite is the Silver Surfer hence the above piece by Paolo Rivera. Silver Surfer is a character with perhaps the most untapped potential in all of comics and while amazing writers and artists have all had a go at him, I don’t think anyone really touched upon the wealth of emotion Kirby imbued him with.

As always, collected below is the best of the last week’s art– well, I say best, but I mostly mean it’s a collection of the art that I really liked that I found over the past week. Enjoy!

Alice W. Castle

Sworn to protect a world that hates and fears her, Alice W. Castle is a trans femme writing about comics. All things considered, it’s going surprisingly well. Ask her about the unproduced Superman films of 1990 - 2006. She can be found on various corners of the internet, but most frequently on Twitter: @alicewcastle
