This week in Art of the Week, we have a lot of great stuff for you. Starting with Phil Noto’s great piece above, we move on to a stunning conceptual piece by Michael Avon Oeming. After that, Gene Gonzales shares a lovely piece with Poison Ivy and everyone’s favorite “dude-who-dresses-up-as-a-bat” Batman, followed by a painting by Massimo Carnevale that makes the movie Crank look better than it rightfully should. Finally, Stephen Mooney takes the character of Red Thunder, introduced in the latest issue of Animal Man, and puts his own spin on it; followed by an arresting drawing of Cerebus by Ryan Ottley.
The piece above, by Phil Noto, however, was chosen because of his stark, iconic renderings of two iconic characters from the new DC Universe. Noto’s style works really well with the Kryptonian ilk and I would personally love to see him work with Grant Morrison on Action Comics or with Keith Giffen on Superman. Furthermore, his grasp of how bodies work strikes a real chord with me, as Kara looks like someone shifting her weight to one side and it not only looks natural, but comfortable as well. Additionally, the idea of one of my favorite artists drawing my absolute favorite character was a no-brainer for the featured piece. Great stuff Phil!
