As a follow-up to our earlier interview with Emma Rios, we continue our Artist August series with the art feature piece, in which I’ve hand-picked some of my favorite works by Emma to show off the wide range of her talent.
For example, look at the image at the top of the post. It’s a black and white layout for a scene from “Osborn,” but the sheer magnitude of it is staggering. Emma’s eye towards the architecture of a layout is at full force here, arcing around the top to give us a full-fledged look into the bowels of this underwater prison riot that’s taking place as a litany of strange characters all vie for power and attention throughout the page.
It’s incredibly eye grabbing, and what I find so particularly endearing about it enough to lead with is that upon review of the work, it’s impossible to tell just how much is going on at a cursory glance. Emma’s art, and this is a great example for this, pretty much deserves to be studied — the way even the tiniest and seemingly incidental line actually informs a larger and crucial piece of the overall whole, whether it be locked together with an arm from a rioter or the railing infront of the cells. All of it connects with such a vibrant synergy that it’s hard not to get lost in it all.
And if you think that one glimpse is pretty sharp, you should pick up the collected edition of the “Osborn” mini. Imagine that, but with another fifty pieces like it and some color to add even more definition to it all. Yeah, you’re right — that is exciting.
Take a look below for some more selected pieces of Emma’s work, from promotional images, comics, covers and more, and stay tuned for more of Artist August throughout the day, week and month.
