Artist August: Guillaume Singelin [Art Feature]

Guillaume Singelin is an artist who’s come to my attention relatively recently. The very first bit of his work to catch my eye were his designs for Jun, a young girl with an eye patch and a giant gun (you’ll see a bit of her below.) Examining Singelin’s art, you’ll see that there is an incredible amount of thought and design that goes into all of it. Jun’s clothing looks to have a fair bit of wear, and none of her accessories seem frivolous. There’s a good amount of believability to what you’re seeing, which stands in juxtaposition with her actual, less realistic anatomy. She’s got these realistic looking clothes and weapons, but has a big head, giant eyes, and a short torso. Singelin’s approach to his art feels almost like Akira Toriyama and José Ladrönn are jamming together on a Disney comic, blending detailed weapons, vehicles and backgrounds with manga-esque characters. I find his work fascinating, it’s like he has the ability to tell an entire story with a single pin-up. When he draws a character, you can almost feel the weight of their entire personal history pushing off of the page and into your head. When Singelin applies this to his sequentials, he draws readers into these worlds of his creation through seemingly effortless storytelling.

As far as I can tell, Singelin’s story Carjacking is the only of his work to have been published in English, appearing in the Pop Gun anthology. Other than that, his comics seem to all be in his native French. Recently, his story Grand Master League was collected in the anthology Chaud Nem Jump. If the following collection of his work suits your fancy, check out his Tumblr and his website for even more.

Artist August: Tom Scioli [Art Feature]

Full disclosure: I had another artist slated for this spot up until quite recently. I went with a pick that I felt was an important artist in the history of comics, and was excited to spotlight their work. However, when I started collecting pieces, I felt nothing. The work, while incredible, didn’t resonate with me […]

Artist August: Liz Prince [Art Feature]

    By | Aug 29, 2014 | Columns

Liz Prince’s comics are exactly the type of comics I want to see more of in the world. Her work lies somewhere between the self-reflection of Jeffery Brown and the raucous energy of James Kochalka, examining herself and her surroundings through the lens of a humorist. Her comics are easily digestible while simultaneously impactful and thought provoking, […]
