We’re all pretty excited about seeing The Avengers next month, but if you just can’t wait until May 4th, you might want to check out The Cabin in the Woods, in theaters today from Lionsgate Entertainment! Now, some of you are no doubt asking “What in the Nine Realms does a genre-bending horror flick have to do with the screen debut of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes?”, so let’s play connect the dots!
The Cabin in the Woods was co-written and directed by one-time Buffy, the Vampire Slayer scribe and Cloverfield screenwriter Drew Goddard. Not bad. We like Drew! But Drew’s co-writer and producer on Cabin is none other than Buffy creator and The Avengers director, Joss Whedon.
Seeing the connections now?
What makes things more interesting is the fact that The Cabin in the Woods also features Thor star, Chris Hemsworth. Cabin was filmed in early 2009, almost a year before principal photography started on Thor, and rumor has it producer Whedon liked Hemsworth’s performance so much, he couldn’t help but put in a good word for the guy when he auditioned for the role of Thunder God. Not to take anything away from Hemsworth, of course, as anyone who’s seen Thor knows he didn’t really need help landing the part. But having some cred with Whedon certainly can’t be a bad thing.
Avengers trivia aside, we’ve heard that Cabin’s actually pretty darn good. And honestly, it’s this, Lockout* or The Three Stooges… plus Hemsworth’s just so dreamy, ya’ll!
Check out the trailer above and check out Cabin in the Woods, in theaters now and holding a nice tight 93% Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes!
