Another week, another Burpee’s Got You Covered. This week brings a small list as I wasn’t entirely impressed by most of the covers out there. One stood above the rest, though. What cover is #1? Will the rankings in the top three change? Well, you’ll have to read on to find out!

There’s only one cover, so I really dug into it and fleshed out the reasons it appealed to me. So let’s commence!

Fear Itself: Book of the Skull #1

by Marko Djurdjevic

This cover is phenomenal. It has everything right. The image on the cover is one of the coolest cover images I’ve seen in quite a while. I also love that the great cover image is not obscured by any element of the trade dress. We all know I’m a big fan of the flow of the cover and this one has enough flow to be a nominee at the Source Awards. Well if there was still a Source Awards program…

Marko Djurdjevic nails this cover image. I love the little touches that give the Red Skull such an evil vibe. I love the glowing eyes and the way the saliva stretches between his teeth by Cap’s leg. These little touches aren’t instantly recognizable in a sense that they are the first thing you’d notice, but they take this cover from good to great. Cap using his shield to push back the teeth of the Red Skull also adds to the intensity of the image because it takes a still picture and adds subtle action to it. It truly is a great image on all fronts.

I really do love the layout here. I love the way the title is tucked behind the Red Skull. The way the image is primary amongst all the items on the cover works well because I think the image will sell the book more to fans and fresh face buyers than the title of the book will. I feel this is one of those cover images that will get people to open the book when they see it on the rack. When they do that, the title is inside and they’ll find it if they want to. Having said all that, it really isn’t a big deal to begin with as the title is only slightly obscured and is clearly readable.

The creators names are also placed in a choice location as they work as a good lower frame for the cover with the Fear Itself banner as the top of the frame. Speaking of the Fear Itself banner, I just want to say that it is probably one of the better looking event banners we’ve seen in some time. It’s not gaudy but it’s most certainly not plain either.

All in all, this is a great cover and is – in my opinion – a cover of the year nominee. I’ll probably be framing this one for man room decoration.

So now it’s time to look at the top three. Marko moves up the list, but not into the top three. For this reason you’ll notice the top three remains the same as last week. There is still a large gap between the two spot and the third spot.

Adi Granov — 13
David Finch — 12
Jae Lee – 6
Dave Johnson — 6

See everyone next week for more cover coverage!
