Covers! Covers! Covers! Come get your covers!

This week we’ve got some beauties. We’ve got a little something for everyone! We’ve got lovely ladies, wicked looking heroes and more. We also have a change to the top three cover artists as one of the selected covers moves an artist back into the top three.

So what made the list? Check it out after the jump.

5. Teen Titans #93
by Nicola Scott

This is one of those covers where the image gets it on the list. I really dig the lighting and the way the shadows are used here as the newest Teen Titan is brought into the book. Outside of a nice looking image and background, this cover doesn’t bring anything unique to the table. It is really pretty though, and thus makes it into the fifth spot.

4. Wonder Woman #609 Variant
by Alex Garner

This is another pretty cover. What I enjoy here is the way the “old school” Wonder Woman is blasting through the Jim Lee redesign as if to tease all those bellyaching fans that maybe they can stop complaining. Whether this actually occurs and the old costume comes back is yet to be seen, but I can guarantee you that there were some fans that saw this cover and cracked it open just to see if this was the case. In the end, isn’t that exactly what you want a cover to make a reader do?

3. Wolverine #7
by Jae Lee

Jae Lee’s Wolverine covers have had some creepy elements, but this cover takes the cake. The X-Men heads on pikes and a Wolvie with a back that looks broken with the weight of his hardships makes for a truly eerie cover. I actually saw the original pencils cover for sale at Emerald City Comic Con, but unfortunately it was way out of my pay grade. The pencil work alone is amazing, though. Add to it the bleak colors and inking and you get the number three cover of the week.

2. American Vampire #13 Variant
by Sean Murphy

I love this cover. I can’t help but get a Joe Kubert Sgt. Rock vibe off of it. One thing that really makes this cover great is that it has the aesthetic of a movie poster. You’ve got the title at the top followed by the creators involved, and then an all out multi-action sequence. Topnotch work from Sean Murphy, as seems to be his default setting these days.

1. Captain America #616
by Travis Charest

Captain American striking an action pose in front of the American Flag is by no means a novel cover concept, but when done right it comes across as iconic – and that is something that never hurts a cover. This is one of those occasions where it’s done extremely well.

The overall image is presented on top of a white background that really makes the cover pop to the eye. The pose in front of the flag isn’t the best ever, but the rest of the image somehow makes it really work and feel impactful.

The trade dress is damn near perfect here. You have all the bits from a standard cover but they are all out of the way as to not deter from the overall cover. The way the colors are used here are brilliant. You’ve got the same tones and colors used throughout which gives the cover a real uniform feel that brings the image and the trade dress into a synchronicity that sells the entire package.

Brilliant cover and without a doubt my number one pick for the week.

————————————–

With that I end my list for the week. I’ll now leave you with the updated top three from the artists list. Below you’ll see the name of the artist as well as their rank on the list. To the right of the name you’ll see the number of times the artist has made Burpee’s Got You Covered for a cover that I placed on the list. You’ll notice Jae Lee has moved back into a tie with Dave Johnson. Granov and Finch remain well separated from the rest of the bunch but Johnson and Lee over the last few weeks have been making serious ground on them.

1. Adi Granov — 13
2. David Finch — 12
3. Dave Johnson — 7
3. Jae Lee -7

See everyone next week!
