Burpee’s Got You Covered!

Another week and another set of covers that I feel were pretty sweet. Well either they were badass or I want to mock and ridicule them. Until you check out the column though you’ll never know which it’s going to be. What do we have this week? We have Spidey villains, artists I don’t enjoy and Wolverine getting a foot job! Wait what?! Yep, you read that correctly Wolvie and a foot job! You can’t pass that up can you? Come on and take a gander…

5. Hulk #19
By Ed McGuinness

Two factors are working against this cover right from the get go. Numero uno being that I feel Red Hulk is lame and his whole story has been stretched out further than Ron Jeremy’s pants when he’s got an erection. The second factor is that I’m not a huge fan of McGuniess’ work. I just don’t enjoy the overly cartoony beefed up hero look. Not saying it’s bad art mind you just not my personal flavor.

Despite these things though I find that I really like the cover. The trade dress is cool. The Thing vs Red Hulk about to bash each other in looks sweet too. It’s a time where I feel McGuiness is perfect for what’s happening. You want two super big dudes to fight? Who should draw that? McGuiness isn’t a bad choice at all. The Thing’s fist being covered with Sue’s power is a fantastic touch too.

Solely based on the fact that I enjoy this cover despite those two huge factors that usually lead to non-enjoyment I had to put this cover on the list. I complain like every other fan but I like to give credit to those I complain about when they make me eat crow and produce something rather enjoyable like this. You win this one McGuiness and Rulk!

4. Wolverine: Weapon X #9
By Adam Kubert

I really dig this cover. I love the Kubert’s X-Men work tremendously. When I think X-Men I think Lee and Kubert when it comes to the art. So seeing Psylocke and Nightcrawler hashing it out with Wolvie is a treat for my eyes.

I did notice one peculiar portion of this cover though. It seems like one violent kinky sex act. Nightcrawler’s feet appear to be covering a naked Wolvie’s junk. Either he’s covering it or giving him a two-toed foot job. Which? I’m not sure. What do you think? Also based on positioning wouldn’t Nightcrawler’s little crawler be right on Wolvie’s wormhole? Then to top it all off Wolvie is choking Psylocke while he’s getting it from Nightcrawler. Don’t they all know that this is the sort of thing that got David Caradine killed?

3. Azrael #4
By Francesco Mattina

Only thing I want to say here is that the cover looks badass. If the interior looked like the covers have I might actually buy this book. Alas, they don’t.

2. Batman: Streets of Gotham #8
By Dustin Nguyen

I LOVE Nguyen’s Batman. Let me say that one more time for you. I LOVE Nguyen’s Batman. He draws one of the coolest Batman’s I’ve ever seen. His style is just absolutely perfect for Batman. His Damien Robin is fantastic as well. I’m a huge fan! I would love to get one of his Batman drawings as a tattoo on my shoulder opposite to my Brian Bolland Joker tattoo. Just gotta find the right one.

As far as the cover goes it’s just very well done. It would work great as t-shirt or a poster for any fan’s man/woman room. If you haven’t seen the making of this cover article over at DC’s Source blog I highly suggest checking it out. Always fun to see how an artist put together a nice piece of art like this. Finish this article though before you go to see it.

1. Web of Spider-Man #4

By Jelena Kevic-Djurdjevic

Scary creepy! Badass! Spooky! How else should I describe this cover. It’s just plain cool as shit people. Mysterio never looked more nefarious and ominous than he does on that cover. He just looks like he’d fuck you up and then leave your ass. Cool image that has stuck with me all week and demanded it be number one. So I obliged!

Well there you have it! Those were my picks for covers of the week, As shown by the non response last week I know nobody reads this so I’m more or less writing this for myself. See watch this. Blee bloo blah ha grab pat yank splat! Makes no sense but kinda does but no one will ever know. See ya next week!
