C2E2 Highlights According To Matthew

Well, we can’t let Burpee have all the fun, now can we! I’m here to talk about a few things that Brandon didn’t, but I’m totally stealing his format and clever titles. He already mentioned a lot of the really cool things, like the return of Casanova and the Young Avengers, but what did Brandon not mention? Hmm? What interesting little tidbits that were dropped at C2E2 (which has, honestly, been MASSIVE) are also worth nothing?

Let’s take a look behind the jump, shall we?
1. Atomic Robo and the Infinity Gauntlet

This is one of the things I’d been waiting for – the announcement of Brian Clevinger’s first secret project over at Marvel. As it turns out, it’s a four issue mini series that revisits/retells the story of the Infinity Gauntlet, originally written by Jim Starlin. Now, I like Thanos, and I like Clevinger, but what’s the deal with this?

The Pros: It’s Clevinger writing for Marvel, something we at MC have been rooting for for quite some time. Tremendous opportunity for him and we’re all very happy for him.

The Cons: … it’s a retelling of the Infinity Gauntlet. We’ve all already read that. I mean, I haven’t been buying the other Marvel retellings, and the only thing that WOULD make me buy this is Clevinger’s name on the cover. With Thanos pretty much off in the other end of the cosmos right now under the careful watch of DnA, I can see why they’d want to tell this story for a younger generation just getting into comic books… but I don’t know if I’ll be supporting this with my dollar, AS MUCH AS I want Clevinger to get more work.

2. SHADOWLAND!

Ok, that wasn’t a creative title, but even so – Andy Diggle. Billy Tan. Daredevil vs the other heroes that will “Shake up the street level characters.” Do I need to say more on this one? Excited, excited, excited!

The Pros: Lots! Andy Diggle is a great writer, Billy Tan is a great artist, and I’ve been being a huge Daredevil fan lately. I’m excited!

The Cons: This is the advent of a new style of event when Marvel said the were staying away from the event. I’m actually in support of this “family event” thing, but a mini? Can’t we just have an event arc in the book?

3. Dark Wolverine Lives

Well, those hoping that the whole “dark” stuff would go away with Siege are a little out of luck. Daken, aka “Dark Wolverine,” will be retaining his series starting in September, and it will continue the story that has been started in the current books. Well, I haven’t been reading the current issues outside of Siege and whatever happens with this final Wolverine Origins crossover, so…

The Pros: Not seeing a lot, other than another title to see on the shelves when I go in weekly. The art is nice enough.

The Cons: Does anyone REALLY like Daken? Like, REALLY?

4. Tony Haris Whistles While He Works

I’m not as good as these names as Burpee! But on the plus side, just because Ex Machina is ending and War Heroes is never ever coming out doesn’t mean we don’t get less Tony Harris art! Wildstorm announced a new book, called The Further Adventures of the Whistling Skull by him and B. Clay Moore!

The Pros: The plot description from Newsarama sounds epic: A pulp noir book taking place in the 1940s, the Whistling Skull is a title handed down though the ages whose holder is destined to fight a shadowy evil.

The Cons: Can’t think of any, other than ANOTHER book I’m going to want to buy.

5. A new X-Force

Marvel teased a new X-Force line up, and while I’m no shadow genius, THAT IS FANTOMEX, people! Yeah! I love Fantomex. He was my favorite new character in Morrison’s run, and I loved his return in Uncanny. Putting him on X-Force only makes sense. However… no more Yost and Kyle. Wait, what?

The Pros: FANTOMEX!

The Cons: Weellll, it does go against his established character attitude, and I did like the line-up of X-Force. The team didn’t need a reboot, but it’ll probably make more sense when I read what happens in Second Coming. But to take Yost and Kyle away urks me. They were doing great up until Necrosha. Why put Remender on the book instead? I’m a bit wishy washy on this, but Fantomex makes me want to read.

6. Jason Aaron Fully Takes Over Wolverine

Need I say more, kids? I don’t know what is going to happen with Weapon X, but I am so happy about this. Jason Aaron’s Wolverine title has been frakkin’ fantastic. Big round of applause for him from us.

The Pros: Everything.

The Cons: Nothing!

7. We Are Explained

So, wanna know what We Are The X-Men is? Mutants vs. Vampires: A new X-Men #1 from Gischler and Medina.

The Pros: Nothing!

The Cons: Sweet deal, now I don’t even have to remotely think about buying it. Thanks Marvel!
