Cat of the Week: Melaka

This week for Pet of the Week, we bring you our first reader submission as Vince Spallino tells us about his cat Melaka.

Full Name: Melaka “Fray” Spallino
First Appearance: August 3rd, 2011
Favorite Comic: Her namesake, of course, Fray
Secret Origin: After I moved into an apartment with my girlfriend this past winter she convinced me to get a kitten so that her cat Hermoine could have a playmate.  We went to a local Planned Pethood event, and it didn’t take long to find a cute, friendly kitten to take home with us.  Joss Whedon’s “Fray” (a self-contained book about a vampire slayer from a dystopian future) was the book that originally got me reading comics – I’d been a fan of his for years.  Now, in an attempt to get my girlfriend to read comics with me, I had recently given her the book to read.  When we brought our new kitten home and she cuddled up on her lap, laying right on top of the book, her name was a no-brainer.

Fray’s first week or two at the apartment were great – we kept the two cats separated as much as possible at first so that they could slowly get used to each other.  Well when the time came to introduce them to each other, we realized how futile our best-laid-plans truly were.  What ensued was nothing short of pure hatred.  They couldn’t even be in the same room without hissing, scratching, chasing, biting, and (usually) breaking things that got in their way.  Now, after months of being roommates, their revulsion of one another is stronger than ever.  Will they ever learn to coexist, or will one cat finally reign victorious over the other in bloody kitten-combat?!

…to be continued!

If you would like your pet to be Pet of the Week, send pictures and the origin of your dog, cat, fish, lizard, etc (preferably with something comic book related somewhere near him or her to make this all seem “more legitimate”) to matthew@multiversitycomics.com, and every week I’ll choose one to go up on the site. All pets sent in will be featured at some point, so if yours doesn’t show up in the first week just keep checking back.

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
