Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.
That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Secret #3 ($3.50) – Jonathan Hickman and Ryan Bodenheim’s disappearing comic book has returned! How long has it been since the last issue? Doesn’t matter. It’s a perfect excuse to return to the first couple issues, which was a fascinating slow-burn thriller. Not quite on the level of “Manhattan Projects” or “East of West”, conceptually, but damn fine in its own right. And Bodenheim’s art is eternally welcome on my pull list.
Tom Strong and the Planet of Peril ($2.99) – Just a fun and good natured comic. This is the kind of comic that DC Comics should be making more of, except with their own million dollar characters. It’s the best “superhero” book they’re releasing right now.
Station to Station ($2.99) – Corinna Bechko and Gabriel Hardman? Come on, people – what do you want from me?
Young Avengers #9 ($2.99) – Just after “Thor: God of Thunder”, which even in its infancy has the potential to go down among the best Thor runs ever, “Young Avengers” is the Marvel NOW! book that everyone should be reading. It’s a modern take on young adulthood that no other creative team in comics is getting as right as Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie are.
Sex #6 ($2.99) – What can I say? This book is still seductively pulling me along by my neck tie.
Itty Bitty Hellboy #1 ($2.99) – Awwwww! It’s Iwwdy Biddy Hewwboy! By Fwwanco and Bawtazawww!
Total: $18.45

Secret #3 ($3.50) – Oh shit, remember this book? I know I do. I love me some Ryan Bodenheim art, definitely excited to check this out. I don’t remember anything about the first two issues at this point, but hey, when has that ever stopped anyone from reading comics before!
Morning Glories #30 ($3.50) – This is my 100% non-biased endorsement of yet another great issue of my favorite book. This one takes a breather from the crazy and goes back to the character-centric stories that people loved in the second arc, and it’ll certainly get people thinking about a few things in new lights … hmmm…
American Vampire Anthology ($7.99) – There’s no way you can skip this this week, even if you’ve never read the book before. The creators on this book are astounding.
Thor: God of Thunder #12 ($3.99) – I have no idea how Aaron and Ribic are going to follow up that finale to ‘Godbomb’ but I’ll be damned if I miss out.
Total: $18.98

Thor: God of Thunder #12 ($3.99): Am I said Esad Ribic is off the book for a bit? Yes. Am I happy Ron Garney is hear to draw a Malekith centric arc? Hell yes I am! In Jason Aaron I trust when it comes to Thor.
Wolverine and the X-Men #35 ($3.99): YAY! The end of the awesome Hellfire Saga arc is here. Who lives? Who dies? Who cares! It’s going to be awesome no matter what.
Itty Bitty Hellboy #1 ($2.99): There’s one certainty in my pull list every week: all Mignola related books are coming home with me. In this case, it’s Art Baltazar and Franco on the book, so awwww yeah they’re going to be on the list!
Young Avengers #9 ($2.99): Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie continue one of the best books Marvel has going, and that’s saying something right now. Style = substance, and what they have is quite substantial indeed.
Lazarus #3 ($2.99): Greg Rucka and Michael Lark continue to craft one of the most interesting comics in the market, and I can’t wait to see what’s next for Forever and her family.
Continued belowSecret #3 ($2.99): On Comiclist.com, it says (resolicited) next to this issue. Understatement of the century? This much delayed title from Jonathan Hickman and Ryan Bodenheim is something I really enjoyed before it disappeared. Hopefully it’s back for good.
Total: $19.94

Itty Bitty Hellboy #1 ($2.99) – Aw yeah!
Batman/Superman #3 ($3.99) – Perhaps the best book DC is publishing. To be fair, there aren’t a ton of great books they’re putting out, but this one is probably tops. Other than “Earth 2.” And “Wonder Woman.” Top 3, definitely.
Justice League #23 ($3.99) – Trinity War conclusion. ‘Nuff said.
New Avengers #9 ($3.99) – I just yelled at fellow MC editor David Harper about his non-love for this book. Don’t make me yell at you! This is a great book!
FF #11 ($2.99) – Rumor has it that “FF” will be losing Mike Allred as of issue #16. This is bad news. The good news? It is only #11, so we still have a few to go. God Bless Mike Allred.
Total: $17.95

Captain Marvel #15 ($2.99) – It’s a “Captain Marvel” week so you should have been able to guess what my first pick is.
Itty Bitty Hellboy #1 ($2.99) – I love Art Baltazar and Franco’s all-ages comics we all love Hellboy, so this is a no-brainer, right?
Batman Inc. Special #1 ($4.99) – “Batman Incorporated” may be gone, but it’s not over yet. While this anthology isn’t quite the same as my dreams of an ongoing focusing separately on the members of the Inc. in their battles after Leviathan, but it’ll do.
Batman/Superman #3 ($3.99) – Boy, it sure would suck if they took Jae Lee off this book and replace him with someone who is completely not on his level for an arc. That sure would suck, right? Well, at least he’s still on for now.
Journey Into Mystery #655 ($2.99) – It’ll be sad to see this one go. I can’t wait to see what Kathryn Immonen and Valerio Schiti go on to work on next.
Total: $17.95
