Comics Should Be Cheap! (9/5/2018)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Matt Lune’s Picks:

Thanos Legacy #1 ($4.99) – I loved the recent “Thanos” run by Donny Cates and Geoff Shaw, and this promises to bridge the gap between the end of that series and the start of “Infinity Wars.” I didn’t especially think that was a gap that needed filling, but I’m not going to look a gift horse in the mouth: more Thanos from Cates!

Asgardians of the Galaxy #1 ($3.99) – I’m a sucker for Marvel Cosmic stuff, and while I’ve not been the biggest fan of recent “Guardians of the Galaxy” stuff, this is the Asgardians we’re talking about. If Beta Ray Bill doesn’t show up in the first issue though, we riot. All agreed?

Border Town #1 ($3.99) – Ramon Villalobos is a buy on sight for me, but this series, using the concept of supernatural monsters invading a nation as an allegory for real-world immigration issues is fascinating.

Cover #1 ($3.99) – Wow, Bendis is cranking out book after book now he’s with the Distinguished Competition, huh. It seems like he’s got a new book every week at the moment, but this one – about comic book creators being used as covert operatives – stands out for me, if for no other reason than David Mack’s artwork.

James Bond Origin #1 ($3.99) – Did anyone else read those Charlie Higson Young Bond books that were released a number of years ago? They were young adult books that chronicled James Bond’s school years and were pretty good. Jeff Parker and Bob Q seem to be taking a similar approach to 007’s early life, so I’m definitely looking forward to checking this out.

Total: $20.95 – All number 1’s this week! Great stuff.

Kate’s Picks:

War Bears #1 ($4.99) – I’m a sucker for anything related to comics history, and while “Hey Kids! Comics!” didn’t sit well with me, this fictional look at the Golden Age has more of what I was looking for in “Hey Kids! Comics!” that wasn’t there. Added bonus: Margaret Atwood on the script.

Bully Wars #1 ($3.99) – It’s a bully story with a twist and with Skottie Young’s irreverent brand of humor, this is going to be a fun “fish out of water” story that will probably (inadvertently) teach a few lessons along the way.

Clankillers #3 ($3.99) – This is filling my Game of Thrones-shaped hole in my heart until next April.

Giant Days #42 ($3.99) – It’s odd to be reading Christmas-themed stories while I can still go to the beach, but Esther and Ed’s will-they-or-won’t-they transcends the season.

Total: $16.96

Mark’s picks:

“Paper Girls” #24 ($3.99)— I have not read any of the fifth arc yet because I love reading this series in chunks, so I’m just going to take a moment to say how much I love Cliff Chiang’s cover.

“Shadow Roads” #3 ($3.99)— This being set in the same universe as “The Sixth Gun,” obviously I’m always going to pick this up. I’m particularly enjoying the way A.C. Zamudio lays out a page. She delights in playing with the way the reader’s eye travels from left to right in the kind of way that only comics can do.

“War Bears” #1 ($3.99)— Margaret Atwood and Ken Steacy are diving into Canadian comics history with “War Bears,” clearly a book made with a lot of affection for its subject matter.

“Giant Days” #42 ($3.99)— This’ll always be on my list.

Total: $15.96.
