Comics Should Be Cheap (3/1/23)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Mark’s Picks:

Phantom Road #1 ($3.99) – 2019’s “Sentient” and 2020’s “Barbalien: Red Planet” were both highlights for me the years they came out, so the idea of Jeff Lemire and Gabriel Hernández Walta working together. The idea of the two working together again on a long-term project, and a horror project at that, is music to my ears. Add colorist Jordie Bellaire to the team, and I’m extra happy. She always finds ways for color to speak thematically, and knowing Lemire and Walta’s work, she’ll have plenty to draw from in that regard.

Koshchei in Hell #3 ($3.99) – It’s such a wonderful thing when you have ridiculously high expectations for a series, and it not only delivers, but breezes far past them. To say Mike Mignola and Ben Stenbeck are knocking it out of the park with this miniseries is a gross understatement.

Total: $7.98. I’d also recommend the budget breaking ($49.99) “Krazy & Ignatz George Herriman Library 1925–1927” from Fantagraphics. Suitably, the artwork is presented on enormous 11.3×13.8 inch pages. Fantasgraphics does these archival collections so well, and Krazy Kat is such an important comic for the early days of the medium.

Brian’s Picks:

Stargirl: The Lost Children #4 ($3.99) – I was a fan of Todd Nauck before this series began, but he has been doing elite, S-tier work on this book. It also doesn’t hurt that Geoff Johns is doing his most cohesive and coherent work in a decade on this book.

Phantom Road #1 ($3.99) – New Jeff Lemire series get purchased. Look, I may make the rules, but I don’t make the rules.

Star Wars #32 ($3.99) – I am behind on this series, but with The Mandalorian dropping on the same day, this is a good time to get caught up with the tales from a galaxy far, far away.

Total: $11.97

Christopher’s Pick:

Action Comics Vol. 3: Warworld Revolution ($19.99) – I just started reading Philip Kennedy Johnson and co.’s ‘Warworld Saga’ in trade paperback, and it’s been very interesting so far. Regardless of how I eventually feel about it, I’ll definitely need access to the third and final trade to finish reading it, and pass it on if need be. Anyway, Superman/Clark Kent looks pretty badass as a gladiator right? If only the Daily Planet staff could see him now!

Total: $19.99
