Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Johnny’s Picks:

S.W.O.R.D. #2 ($3.99) – I can’t say I was blown away by the premise of this series, but I love the cast, and more specifically, I loved artist Valerio Schiti’s designs for this series, and I want to see more. And while the first issue’s story didn’t wow me, writer Al Ewing rarely misses, so I’m sticking with this. It is a foregone conclusion I’m gonna be reading most of the Hickman-era of X-books, so let’s just keep the party going.

Future State Justice League #1 ($6.99) – I could literally recommend and talk about any one of the seven(!) Future State books released this week- they all have something interesting that caught my eye, more often than not that being the terrific artist/writer pairings editorial has cooked up for fans. With a surprising mix of talented folks that now has a person like me who only dips into DC books every once in a while worriedly looking at my monthly comics budget, I have a feeling this event is going to have far more hits than misses. The big hit for me this week is Jo Mullein on the JLA, and Etrigan possessing the body of Detective Chimp. Where can you find those two awesome things? Right here, folks!

Total: $10.98

Kate’s Picks:

Future State: Superman Wonder Woman #1 ($3.99) – After last week’s “Future State: Wonder Woman” debut, get me more Yara Flor, STAT.

Haha #1 ($3.99) – Come for the W. Maxwell Prince storytelling that mixes horror with sunshine and roses, stay for the covers by Vanesa Del Rey and Nimit Malavia.

Blade Runner 2029 #2 ($3.99) – One of the things I love about the “Blade Runner” series is how, like “Life is Strange,” the writers take the core concepts and characters and spin them into new stories that pay tribute to their source material without getting bogged down in canon, all while trying something new. This particular series has been leaning hard into a traditional mystery story, and it’s just utterly intriguing to read.

Total: $11.97

Vince’s Picks:

Space Bastards #1 ($5.99) – I can’t imagine a book about gruff space-couriers drawn by Darick Robertson isn’t going to be the bee’s knees.

Ha Ha #1 ($3.99) – I’m checking this one out more for Vanesa Del Rey’s gorgeous art than anything else, but I’m keeping my mind open and I’ll pick up a few issues as they come out, hoping that the promise of a “genre-jumping” exercise from issue to issue is something that hooks me and ropes me in.

Home Sick Pilots #2 ($3.99) – “Home Sick Pilots” is such a unique mashup of things I dig that I have no choice but to stan. Haunted houses? Punk rock? Kaiju? The freakin’ 1990s? Check it out

Total: $13.97

Mark’s Pick:

Sweet Tooth: The Return #3 ($3.99) – It’s a quiet week for me. I haven’t started reading “Sweet Tooth: The Return” yet (as usual, I’m waiting till it’s all done), but I did do a reread of the original “Sweet Tooth.” I’m curious to see what else Lemire has to say in this universe, especially since the ending of the original “Sweet Tooth” was so definitive.

Total: $3.99.
